Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT i Applicant(s): SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.
Invention Title: A PAGING RECEIVER OF DISPLAYING A RECEIVE SIGNAL STRENGTH INDICATOR The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: A PAGING RECEIVER OF DISPLAYING A RECEIVE SIGNAL STRENGTH INDICATOR Background of the Invention 1. Field of the Invention o.
The present invention relates to a paging receiver, and more particularly to a paging receiver of measuring and displaying a receive signal strength 9* indicator (Hereinafter, referred to as "RSSI") of a receive signal.
9o** The present invention for a paging receiver of displaying a receive signal strength indicator, is based on Korean Application No. 15224/1995 which is incorporated herein by reference for all purposes.
2. Description of the Related Art Fig.1 is a block diagram illustrating a conventional construction of a paging receiver. Generally, the paging receiver constructed as shown in Fig. 1 has a function of informing a call from an external of an nus Fig. 1, a radio frequency receiving unit 100 demodulates a radio frequency signal received through an antenna and then waveform-shapes the demodulated signal to digital data, thereby to apply shaped digital data to a controller 102. And then, the controller 102 decodes data applied from the radio frequency receiving unit 100, thereby to detect a preamble and a wordsync. In the case that a proper address data of the paging receiver itself is searched, the controller 102 drives many kinds of alarming unit (not shown) according to an operation mode set by a key input unit 104, or displays a received message on a displayer 106. At this time, the controller 102 having a memory for storing proper address data and frame data for searching data of the corresponding paging receiver itself among received data momentarily stores the received message.
The above paging receiver cannot be generally served a radio paging in the case that it gets out of a constant range of a service area. Accordingly, the controller 102 detects a possibility of a paging service from data applied from the radio frequency receiving unit 100, thereby to inform the user of as to whether the area corresponds to a service possible area or a service impossible area through the displayer 106.
On the other hand, even in the case that the paging receiver is positioned within the service possible area, the RSSI level of the receive signal is not constantly maintained, and the RSSI level is different every respective positions.
The RSSI level is much lowered where there is an obstacle around or where a radio wave is cut off such as a basement, and in the worst case, the paging service cannot be performed even within the service possible area.
The conventional paging receiver does not have a function of measuring the RSSI level. Accordingly, at a field test of a product development procedure, there has been an inconvenience in which 'an RSSI measuring equip nent is utilized to set a reference level. Also, there has been difficulty in utilizing the 2 paging receiver because the user can know just only whether the paging service is possible, but cannot know the RSSI level of a present position.
Summary of the Invention Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a paging receiver of detecting and displaying a receive signal strength indicator (RSSI) level of a receive signal.
C
In order to accomplish the above objects, the present invention provides a paging receiver having a receive signal strength indicator displaying function, comprising a radio frequency receiving unit for detecting a voltage level of a to 10 radio frequency signal received through an antenna to thereby output the detected voltage level, and after demodulating the voltage level of the radio frequency signal, waveform-shaping the demodulated voltage level to digital data to thereby S output the waveform-shaped voltage level; an A/D converter for generating digital data having a corresponding value of the voltage level detected by the radio frequency receiving unit; a key input unit for setting a receive signal strength indicator displaying mode; a controller for detecting a receive signal strength indicator level by output of the A/D cnverter in response to the receive signal strength indicator displaying mode which is set by the key input unit; and a displayer for displaying the detected receive signal strength indicator level by a control of the controller.
Brief Descriotion of the Drawings 3 The following is a detailed description of the invention by the reference of their attached drawings, in which like nuinbers indicate the same or similar elements; Fig.1 is a block diagram illustrating a conventional construction of a paging receiver.
Fig.2 is a block diagram illustrating a paging receiver according to the present invention.
o Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment *S In the following, a preferred embodiment will be described with reference 10 to attached drawings.
Fig.2 is a block diagram illustrating a paging receiver according to the present invention. A radio frequency receiving unit 200 detects a voltage level of a radio frequency signal received through an antenna to thereby apply the voltage level of the radio frequency signal to an analog-to-digital converter (Hereinafter, referred to as "A/D converter") 202, and demodulates the voltage level of the radio frequency signal and then waveform-shapes the demodulated voltage level to digital data to thereby apply digital data to the controller 204.
The A/D converter 202 generates digital data having a corresponding value of the voltage level, thereby to apply digital data to the controller 204. The controller 204 performs a general controlling operation as discussed above, and the controller 204 detects the RSSI level by an output of the A/D converter 202 in response to setting of an RSSI displaying mode, thereby to display the RSSI 4level through a displayer 208. A key value for setting the RSSI displaying mode is applied to the controller 204 through a key input unit 206 having general keys necessary for the paging receiver.
In the following, an operation example of Fig. 2 will be described.
The voltage level of the radio frequency signal eceived through the antenna is detected by the radio frequency receiving unit 200 and then is applied to the A/D converter 202 by the radio frequency receiving unit 200. And then, by the radio frequency receiving unit 200, the voltage level is demodulated, *eo waveform-shaped to digital data and applied to the controller 204, And the A/D 0 converter 202 generates digital data having the corresponding value of the voltage level outputted from the radio frequency receiving unit 200, thereby to apply digital data to the controller 204.
In the above, if the user sets the RSSI displaying mode through the key input unit 206 in a state of a general receive standby mode, the controller 204 responds to the RSSI displaying mode, thereby to display the RSSI level being detected according to a value of data outputted from the A/D converter 202 on the displayer 208. At this time, the controller 204 can display the value of data outputted from the A/D converter 202 as a digit or a bar type of Icon. In the case that the value is displayed as a digit, for example, if output data of the A/D converter 202 is 8 bits of data, the value is displayed as the digit between 0 to 255. In the case that the value is displayed as the bar, the value is selectively displayed as 0 to 7 bars which lengthen by stages.
5 Accordingly, the RSSI level of the present position can be checked without utilizing the separate measuring equipment.
As discussed above, there is'an advantage in which the paging receiver according to the present invention can set by detecting and displaying the RSSI level of the receive signal without utilizing the separate RSSI measuring equipment at the time of the field test as well as the user can more effectively utilize the paging receiver.
ioo 0 *too While there have been illustrated and described what are considered to be preferred embodiments of the present invention, it will be understood by those S skilled in the art that various changes and'modifications may be made, and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the true scope of the present invention.
