TITLE
SWIVEL TYPE HOSE END FITTING BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates in general to fittings adapted to be secured to the ends of tubes and hoses in fluid power systems and in particular to an improved structure for a swivel type hose end fitting adapted for use in such a fluid power system.
In a basic fluid power system, a liquid (such as oil) or a gas (such as air) is supplied at an elevated pressure from a source through a line to an actuator. The actuator is responsive to the presence of the pressurized fluid to cause mechanical movement. In some applications, the line connecting the source of pressurized fluid to the actuator is a relatively rigid tube. In other applications, this line is a relatively flexible hose. In either event, an end fitting is typically provided on the end of the tube or the hose to provide a leak proof (or at least relatively leak proof) connection between it and the actuator connected thereto.
Many different types of tubes and hoses are available for various applications. similarly, a wide variety of end fittings are also available. Thus, the tubes, hoses, and end fittings are.often supplied as separate components to provide maximum flexibility, permitting a user to select a suitable combination which meets the needs of a particular application. Typically, the end fittings are formed from a plurality of components which are crimped or otherwise secured together about the end of the tube or the hose.
Frequently, the connection of the end fitting to the tube or hose is performed in the field, where specialized tools may not be readily available. Thus, an important consideration in the design and manufacture of such end fittings is the ease by which they can be assembled together and secured to the end of a tube or hose for use.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a swivel type end fitting adapted to be secured to the 6 end of a hose comprising: a generally hollow cylindrical insert having a first end portion, an intermediate portion defining an outer diameter, and a second end portion defining an outer diameter, a first external shoulder being defined between said first end portion of said insert and said intermediate portion, a second external shoulder being defined between said intermediate portion and said second end portion of said insert; a generally hollow cylindrical swivel nut having a first end portion and a second end portion, an internal shoulder being defined between said first end portion of said swivel nut and said second end portion of said swivel nut, said swivel nut being disposed about said insert such that said internal shoulder engages said first external 16 shoulder of said insert; and a generally hollow cylindrical collar having a partially closed end portion defining an inner diameter which is greater than said outer diameter of said second end portion of said insert and less then said outer diameter of said intermediate portion of said insert, said collar being disposed about said insert such that said partially closed 20 end portion is installed on said insert without contacting said second end portion of said insert and without deformation so as to engage said second external shoulder of said insert, i' There is further disclosed herein a method of securing a swivel type end fitting to the end of a hose comprising the steps of: 26 providing a generally hollow cylindrical insert having a first end portion, an intermediate portion defining an outer diameter, and a second end portion defining an outer diamneter, a first external shoulder being defined between said first end portion of said insert and said intermediate portion, a second external shoulder being defined between said intermediate portion and said second end portion of said 1 30 insert; providing a gen'erally hollow cylindrical swivel nut having a first end portion and a second end portion, an internal shoulder being defined between said first end portion of said swivel nut and said second end portion of said swivel nut; moving said swivel nut axially about said insert such that said internal as shoulder engages said first external shoulder of said insert; proviing a generally hollow cylindrical collar having a partially closed end portion defining an inner diameter which is greater than said outer diameter 1 IN:\LiltlO?6lMt.HlW of said second end portion of said insert and less than said outer diameter of said intermediate portion of said insert; moving said collar axially about said insert such that said partially closed end portion engages said second shoulder of said insert without contacting said G second end portion of said insert and without deformation; inserting an end of the hose axially within said collar and about said second end of said insert; and crimping a portion of said collar about said hose and said second end of said insert to secure the end fitting to the end of the hose.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings, there is illustrated in Fig. 1 an exploded elevational view, partially in cross section, of a swivel type end fitting, indicated generally at 10, in accordance with this invention. The end fitting 10 includes a brass insert 11 which is generally hollow and cylindrical in shape. The insert 11 is formed having a first end portion 12 (the left end when viewing Fig. an intermediate portion 13, and a second end portion 14 (the right end when viewing Fig. The first end portion 12 of the insert 11 is formed having a larger outer diameter than the intermediate portion 13. As a result, a first external circumferential shoulder 15 is defined about the outer surface of the insert 11.
Similarly, the intermediate portion 13 of the insert 11 is formed having a larger outer diameter than the second end portion 14. As a result, a second external circumferential shoulder 16 is defined about the outer surface of the insert 11. The purpose of these shoulders and 16 will be explained below. The outer surface of the first end 12 of the insert 11 is provided with an annular groove 17, for a purpose which will be explained below. The outer surface of the second end 14 of the insert 11 is provided with a series of annular ramped serrations, for a purpose which will also be explained below.
The end fitting 10 also includes an O-ring 20. The o-ring 20 is conventional in the art and is formed from a flexible elastomeric material. The purpose of the O-ring will be explained below.
The end fitting 10 further includes a brass swivel nut which is also generally hollow and cylindrical in shape. A first end portion 31 of the swivel nut 30 (the left end when viewing Fig. 1) is formed having a larger inner diameter than a second end portion 32 (the right end when viewing Fig. As a result, an internal circumferential shoulder 33 is defined about the inner 1 surface of the swivel nut 30 between the two end portions 31 and 32 thereof. The outer surface of the first end portion 31 of the swivel nut 30 is threaded as shown at 34, while the outer surface of the second end portion 32 of the swivel nut 30 is provided with flats 35. The flats 35 are provided such that a conventional wrench (not shown) may be used to engage and rotate the swivel nut 30, as will be explained below.
Lastly, the end fitting 10 includes a brass collar which is also generally hollow and cylindrical in shape.
The collar 40 includes a partially closed end portion 41 which is defined by a radially inwardly extending annular flange. As shown in Fig. 1, the collar 40 is sized to fit snugly about a flexible hose 50 such that the partially closed end portion 41 abuts the axial edge of the hose The hose 50 may be formed from any conventional hose or tube material commonly available for use in fluid power systems.
To assemble the end fitting 10 onto the hose 50, the O-ring 20 is initially lubricated and moved axially over the second end portion 14 and the intermediate portion 13 of the insert 11 onto the first end portion 12 thereof so that it is received within the annular groove 17. Then, the swivel nut 30 is moved axiallv over the saconrA end portion 14 and the intermediate portion 13 of the insert 11 until the inner shoulder 33 thereof engages the first outer shoulder 15 of the insert 11. The engagement of these shoulders 33 and 15 prevents further axial movement of the swivel nut 30 relative to the insert 11 and positions the swivel nut 30 axially relative thereto.
Next, the collar 40 is moved axially over the second end portion 14 of the insert until the partially closed end portion 41 thereof engages the second outer shoulder 16 of the insert 11. The engagement of the partially closed end portion 41 and the shoulder 16 prevents further axial movement of the collar 40 relative to the swivel nut 30 and the insert 11, and further positions the collar 40 axially relative thereto.
Lastly, the serrations of the second end portion 14 of the insert 11 are lubricated, and the leading edge of the hose 50 is inserted within the collar 40 and about the serrated second end portion 14 of the insert 11. The hose is moved axially within the collar 40 until the leading edge thereof engages the partially closed end portion 41 of the collar 40. The engagement of the leading edge of the hose 50 with the partially closed end portion 41 of the collar 40 prevents further axial movement of the hose relative to the collar 40, the swivel nut 30, and the insert 11, and further positions the end of the hose axially relative thereto. The assembled end fitting 10 is shown in Fig. 2.
Once the end fitting 10 has been assembled in this manner, a conventional crimping machine (not shown) can be employed to compress portions of the collar 40 about the end of the hose 50 in a known manner. As a result, the hose 50 is secured to the end fitting 10 as shown in Fig.
3. Because the swivel nut 30 is spaced apart from the collar 40, the swivel nut 30 i.i free to rotate relative thereto. The O-ring 20 provides a fluid tight seal between 6 the insert 11 and the swivel nut 20. Consequently, a reliable swivel type connection is effected between the hose 50 and the end fitting 10. The threaded outer surface 34 of the swivel nut 30 can then be used to connect the hose 50 to an actuator (not shown) for use.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, the principle and mode of operation of this invention have been explained and illustrated in its preferred embodiment. However, it must be understood that this invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically explained and illustrated without departing from its spirit or scope.
