Abstract

Being discussed at present is the so-called 'letter-box' method for the insertion of a 16:9 wide-picture format into existing standard systems (e.g. PAL, SECAM, NTSC) in 4:3 format. Format information is transmitted as auxiliary data in the so-called ultra-black region. The invention calls for an increase in black level to be inserted in the composite video signal (FBAS). This shifts the clamping reference value, thus shifting the black level. The additional information in the ultra-black region thus created can be transmitted at a high signal level.
