COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title: /!AL3LJC4 1 FA NL I. *.The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best Smethod of performing it known to me:- 1 PORTABLE CABLE DRUM STAND This invention relates to improvements in stands or supports for dispensing cable, rope or other wound material from their drums.
There have been several proposals for supporting cable drums, but these have been either bulky or do not restrain the drum during all conditions. For example one previous stand is not able to be folded flat for storage. Another relies on the mass of the cable drum to keep it in position, hence when the drum is almost empty, the.tension in the cable being drawn pulls the drum off the support.
These problems have been overcome by the present invention which folds down for storage and operates effectively for drums which are full to empty even if the drum has slightly deformed sides.
A base frame with a carry handle at one or both ends has hinged arms which, in the.operating position, are locked together with a locating pin. The top arm houses a bushing/bearing assembly witn an axle which protrudes almost horizontally above the base frame.
The axle, with a shaped guide, supports the cable drum which slides into position ready for dispensing the cable. The cable drum rotates on the shaped -guide according to the tension being applied by the operator on the cable.
After use, the portable cable drum stand is folded down by removing the locating pin and lowering the two arms. The locating pin is then used to lock down 30 the top arm against the base frame ready for storage.
In another form of the invention, the shape guide comes with a handle suitable for rewinding the cable or rope onto the drum if required.
To assist in understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompany'ing drawings.
In the drawings: FIG. 1 shows the stand in the operating position; FIG. 2 shows the stand in the storage or folded down position; FIG. 3 shows the stand with a cable drum ready for rotation.
2 Referring to FIG. 1, the base frame 1, with brackets at the left end, supports the two hinged arms 2 and 3.
The bottom arm 2 is hinged on a bold and nut arrangement 5. Similarly, the top arm 3 is hinged on a bolt and nut arrangement 6 shown in FIG. 3.
Referring to FIG. 3, the two arms are locked together for operation by pin 7 which protrudes through both arms. .During storage, pin 7 is relocated so strap 8 is used to ensure that the pin is never misplaced.
Referring back to FIG. 1, the top arm 3 houses a cylindrical brass bushing or other bearing assembly which holds shaped guide 4. The guide is located by circlips on either side of the bushing.
Referring to FIG. 3, the cable drum 10 slides onto the shaped guide which provides a firm fit. To release the cable 11, tension is applied at the cable end until the required amount is dispensed.
o"'o Referring to FIG. 2, the stand may be folded down after use and stored away. This is done by releasing the 20 locating pin and lowering the bottom arm first then the top arm. The pin 7 is then inserted into the frame and .top arm to secure both arms against the frame.
Referring to FIG. 3, the handle 9 may be used to lift the assembly in both operating and stored conditions.

Claims (1)
- 4. f'' 3 The claims defining the invention are as follows: 1. A portable cable drum stand, which may be folded down for storage, comprising a base frame with two horizontally hinged arms, locked together with a locating pin with the top arm housing a rotating drum guide axle for supporting a drum ready to dispense cable, rope or other material by the operator applying tension onto the cable, rope or other material end. 2. The portable cable drum stand of claim 1 wherein the base frame is fitted with one or two handles for carrying the stand. 3. The portable cable drum stand of claim 1 wherein the rotating drum guide is fitted with a handle used to rewind/wind material onto the drum. 4. A portable cable drum stand substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. (Name of Applicant) (BLOCK LETTERS) (Date) 41 0 ABSTRACT A portable cable drum stand which supports a drum and allows it to rotate to release the required cable according to the tension applied at the cable end. The stand comprises a base frame with folding arms one of which supports the rotating axle and drum guide The folding arms may be lowered and locked into the frame ready for storage. *g *o *o*
