Patents Act COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
(ORIGINAL)
Class Int. Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: o 84** ft *i* e *oo Name of Applicant: Bergische Achssnfabrik Fr. Kotz Sohne Actual Inventor(s): Hans-Josef Leidig Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: AXLE NUT Our Ref 298011 POF Code: 1509/40690 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): 1 6006 Axle nut The subject of the invention is an axle nut for a wheel bearing with a hub which is rotatably mounted on a stub axle, wherein in the end of the stub axle orthogonally intersecting bores and in a castle of the axle nut axially disposed slots are provided for the purpose of inserting a locking bolt.
From DE 39 22 858 Al a wheel bearing for trailer axles is known, whose axle nut has a radial slot provided in the vicinity of the outside, while the free-standing, flexible part can be braced against the inside situated portion of the axle nut by means of at least one clamping screw. Although an infinitely adjustable bearing adjustment is feasible with this known axle nut, during the intended use of the wheel bearing it is possible that the axle nut would move in the direction of detachment if the clamping screw was not correctly tightened during the assembly or has become undone. Consequently, due to safety reasons, the known axle nut with the radial slot has not been used so far in practice.
Another state-of-the-art (DE-GM 19 76 012) is that in the free end of the stub axle orthogonally intersecting bores and in a castle of the axle nut axially disposed slots are provided to ~introduce a locking pin. This known axle nut has altogether six axially disposed slots, corresponding to a symmetrical spacing of 60'. Consequently, when adjusting the bearing, the axle nut S must be always turned at least 30 until it reaches a locking position again. This minimum angle of rotation is too great to ensure an optimum adjustment of the bearing clearance.
Based on this, the object of the invention is to produce an improved axle nut, with the aid of which simultaneously a securo and finer adjustment of the bearing is feasible.
For this purpose, as a technical solution, it is proposed to provide the slots asymmetrically spaced in the castle of the axle nut.
The asymmetrical spacing in a practical embodiment can be, for example, viewed in clockwise direction, twice 60 once 450, again twice 60 and once 750.
With an asymmetrical spacing it is feasible to es ablish the minimum angle of rotation of the axle nut considerably below 300, without weakening the castle of the axle nut to a great degree with slots disposed too close to each other. With the described embodiment it is possible to reduce the minimum angle of rotation to 150. Depending on the pitch of the thread of the axle nut and the axle stub, with this angle of rotation axial adjustments which are only hundredths of a millimetre can be achieved and consequently an optimum bearing adjustment is feasible. At the same time the set bearing clearance can be 5 fixed in the conventional manner by means of a locking bolt 0* which is inserted through the slot of the axle nut into a bore of the stub axle.
In a further development of the invention a securing of the locking bolt is proposed, consisting of a hole, provided in the head of the locking bolt, and a spring clip pushed through the 0 hole. At the same time the spring clip should wrap around the castle of the axle nut at an angle of more than 270 and be provided at least on one end with an inwardly bent hook, which hook can engage a slot of the axle nut.
An axle nut and a securing on the stub axle constructed in accordance with this technical teaching combines the advantage of a sufficiently fine bearing adjustment with the further advantage of a very secure fastening of the once adjusted bearing clearance by means of a locking bolt, which, if used as intended, cannot become undone.
Further details and advantages become apparent from the following description of the relevant drawings, in which an axle nut constructed in accordance with the invention is illustrated schematically showing views and sections. The drawings show: Fig.l a wheel bearing in longitudinal section; Fig.2 an axle nut in top view; Fig.3 the same axle nut sectioned along the line III-III of Fig.2, in a side view; Fig.4 an axle nut mounted on the stub axle, in top view.
On the end of an axle shaft 1 a stub axle 2 is mounted or formed on, which is provided with two, situated at a distance from each other, bearing journals 3, 4 for an inner taper roller bearing 5 and an outer taper roller bearing 6. A onepiece hub 7 is mounted freely rotatably on both taper roller bearings 5, 6. On one side a brake drum and on the opposite situated side a wheel with wheel studs may be fastened on the outer periphery of the hub 7.
On the outside of the inner taper roller bearing 5 a thrust washer 8 is disposed, which on its outer periphery is provided with a flange reaching up to the inner wall of the hub 7. In front of the flange of the thrust washer 8 a first circlip 9 is inserted into an inner groove of the hub 7.
On the other end an axle nut 10 with a formed on flange 11 is disposed in front of the outer taper roller bearing 6, which S. flange 11 reaches up to the inner wall of the hub 7. On the outside of the flange 11 a second circlip 12 is inserted into a continuous groove of the hub 7.
The axle nut 10 is screwed onto the outside thread of the free end of the stub axle 2 by means of an internal thread. In the free end of the stub axle 2 orthogonally intersecting bores 13 are provided.
The axle nut 10 has a castle 14 with slots 15 which are disposed in the axial direction and are open to the front. Into one of the slots 15 and inco one of the bores 13 a locking pin 16 is inserted. The locking pin 16 has a hole 17 in its head for the purpose of inserting a bowed spring clip 18, which is secured in one of the slots 13 by means of an inwardly bent hook 19.
The unit, consisting of the hub 7, the two taper roller bearings 5 and 6, the thrust washer 8, the two circlips 9 and 12 and the axle nut 10, can be pre-assembled and in toto pushed onto the stub axle 2. The fine adjustment of the bearing unit is carried out by means of the axle nut 10 by means of a torque wrench. To enable an adjustment of the bearing clearance in relatively small stages, the slots 15 are provided in the castle 14 of the axle nut asymmetrically. It can be seen from the top view illustrated in Fig.2, that the spacing of the •45: slots 15 is, in clockwise direction, twice 600, once 45', then o go again twice 600 and once 750. Due to this asymmetric spacing it is feasible to adjust the axle nut 10 in small stages of 150, because in this case one of the slots 15 is always aligned with one of the bores 13, so that a locking pin 16 can be introduced.
The flange 11 of the axle nut 10 has cutaways 20 to enable the ingress and the breathing of the grease which is provided in a S hub cap 21.
