Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "Carry Handle for Carry Bags" The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best nethod of performing it~known to me:- S019009 17/12/90 V A)* 2 The present invention relates to carrying means, more particularly, carrying handles for carry bags and the like.
Previously known carrier handles for carry bags etc.
suffer from one or more of the following disadvantages:i. They are not ergonomically designed and therefore, they are uncomfortable, especially for the elderly.
2. It is difficult or awkward to insert and/or remove the handles of the carry bag with the carrying handle.
3. The handles of the carry bag are not adequately retained within the carry handle and the carry bag handles slip out of the carry handle when the carry handle is not in an upright position.
4. There is no provision for securing the carry handle with carry bags attached to a fixed point, for example, 0 15 a hook in a car boot.
g 5. They deform when used with more than 1 or 2 carry r bags at a time.
6. They only fit particular types of bags, they are not universal in their application.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION ~The present invention is directed to a carry handle for @0s0 such things as shopping carry bags, hand bags, and the like, and seeks to overcome or substantially reduce the common problems with the prior art carry handles.
S 25 The present invention consists in a carry handle for carry bags and the like, comprising a longitudinal trough for supporting handles of a portable object, the trough having a ooo.o: base portion and opposite side walls; at least one of the side walls includes retaining mnans for retaining the handles of a portable object within the longitudinal trough, the retaining means biased towards the opposite side wall and co-operating with the opposite side wall so as to permit access of the handles of a portable object into the longitudinal trough.
In a first preferred version of the invention, the carry 3 handle is adapted to comfortably fit into a palm of a hand.
In a second preferred version of the invention, the base portion of the longitudinal trough includes a downwardly curled lip at either end of the trough which assists in distributing the weight of the bags comfortably within the longitudinal trough.
In a third preferred version of the invention at least one side wall of the longitudinal trough is longer than the opposite side wall to facilitate easy access of the handles of a carry bag into the longitudinal trough and adapted with means for fixing the handle to a fixed surface such that any carry bags attached to the carry handle will not move during oS e transport.
In a fourth preferred version the base portion of the longitudinal trough includes a protuberance which positions the handle of the carry bag in an optimal position for carrying and prevents the handle rotating.
In a fifth preferred version the carry handle of the present invention is moulded out of plastics materials which do not deform under heavy loads.
In a sixth preferred version the retaining means is in the form of a longitudinal thickening or protuberance of at least one side wall.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Hereinafter, given by way of example only, is a preferred embodiment of the present invention described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a carry handle according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the carry handle of Fig. i.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The carry handle 1 of Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a longitudinal trough 2 having a base portion 4 and side walls 6 and 8 adapted for supporting the handles of a carry bag or the like.
-4.
The side wall 6 includes retaining means 10, the retaining means 10 being biassed towards the opposite side wall 8 and co-operates with it, such that, it functions in holding the carry handle to the handle of a carry bag or the like, regardless of the orientation of the carry handle, and at the same time, allows easy access of a handle of a carry bag through the gap 14 between the retaining means 10 and side wall 8 into the longitudinal trough 2 as well as permitting deliberate (but not accidental) removal of the handles of a carry bag when desired.
In the preferred embodiment the retaining means 10 is formed by a longitudinal protuberance in the side -wall 6, cci.
*a which makes the carry handle comfortable to hold. It should be noted that the retaining means may take many forms and still be able to perform the function as described.
*In the preferred carry handle of Figs. 1 and 2, the side wall 8 extends upwardly from the base to form a curved surface 16, which functions as a guide to allow easy access of a handle of a carry bag through the gap 14 into the trough 2. The carry handle of Figs. 1 and 2 is made of a e material, preferably plastics material, that is sufficiently Sa flexible to allow access of a number of carry bag handles as required, through the gap 14 into the trough 2, even if the 25 retaining means 10 is actually in contact with side wall 8.
eil2 The surface 16 includes a hole 20 which can be used for engaging with a hook in a car boot, for example, such that, the carry handle and any carry bags attached thereto are kept in positio,1 during transport.
The base portion 4 includes a lip 18 at either end of the trough 2, which aids in distributing the weight of the carry bags in the trough 2 as well as providing a comfortable grip for the carry handle in the palm of a hand.
Protrusion 12 in the base portion 4 or side wall 8 prevent the handles of the bags moving around and in conjunction with lip 18 prevents the carry handle from 5 rotating.
The carry handle 1 in Figs. 1 and 2 is of a size and shape that comfortably fits into the palm of a hand and spreads the load across the trough 2.
The carry handle of the present invention is made of a sufficiently resilient material, such that it will not deform under heavy loads. A preferred material for the carry handle of the present invention is high density polypropylene, although many other materials known in the art would be also suitable.
It is envisaged that the retaining means 10 may be in the form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or alternatively, any *999 other suitable design such as a spring clip or protrusion (solid or hollow) of either side wall, for example, would 15 also adequately perform the required function.
ta From the foregoing description, it should be apparent that the invention encompasses an advantageous advance in the art. Further, it should be clear that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or the essential characteristics thereof. The present ~embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
