CS*e Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: Andrew Schmittauer Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Right Angle Landing Valve ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [31) Application No(s) [33) Country PK3535 AU [32) Application Date 23 November 1990 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:colair' 2 Right Angle Landing Valve FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention pertains to valves and more particularly to a right angle landing valve having a one piece valve body.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Large right angle landing valves of the prior art used two piece cast valve bodies. A two piece cast valve body is expensive.
OBJECT AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to substantially ameliorate some of the disadvantages associated with prior art valves.
Accordingly, a right angle landing valve is provided. The valve has a gas: one piece cast valve body. The valve body includes an inlet, an outlet and a spindle opening. A spindle assembly passes through the spindle opening. The spindle assembly includes a spindle and a jumper valve 15 which is removably retained by the spindle. The jumper valve is extractable through the outlet. The valve body further comprises a cast-in-place seal insert.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a partially cross sectioned view of a valve made in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
BEST MODE AND OTHER EMBODIMENTS 0 As shown in Fig. 1, a 64 mm right angle landing valve 10 comprises a cast iron valve body 11 and a valve spindle assembly 12. The valve body 11 is characterised as having an inlet 13, and outlet 14 and a valve 25 spindle opening 15. The outlet 14 is adapted to receive a wide variety of outlet adapters, different styles being utilized in different localities. The outlet adaptor 16 depicted in Fig. 1 is a gunmetal outlet adaptor which is utilized in New South Wales. A threaded or Queensland style adaptor may also be received by the outlet 14.
The valve body 11, unlike valve bodies of the prior art, is cast as a single integral component. The seal insert 17 is cast in place. The insert is preferably gunmetal or alternately, brass. A peripheral groove 18 is formed therein prior to insertion in the valve body mold. In this way, the engagement between the insert 17 and the valve body 11 is promoted by the close contact between the insert 17 and the valve body 11, together with the filling of the peripheral groove 18 with metal from the valve body casting.
-3- The valve spindle opening 15 in the valve body 11 Is in the form of a passageway or bore which extends through to the Interior 19 of the valve body.
The valve spindle assembly 12 further comprises a spindle 20, a gland nut 21, a jumper valve 22, a resilient washer 23 and a retaining nut 24.
The jumper valve 22 is in the form of a disc 25. A threaded stub 26 projects from one side of the disc 25. A stub shaft 27 projects from the other side of the disc. The stub shaft 27 is slidably received within a blind bore 28 formed in one end of the spindle. This same end of the spindle is externally threaded 29 for mating engagement with threads formed along the valve spindle opening 15. The disc 25 is sized to press a peripheral portion of the washer 23 into engagement with the t ,sealing insert 17. The retaining nut 24 prevents the washer from falling 15 off the threaded stub 26. The jumper valve 22 is sized so that when the spindle 20 is retracted, the stub shaft 27 can be fully withdrawn from the blind bore 28. This allows the entire jumper valve, including washer and retaining nut, to be withdrawn through the valve body outlet 14, at least when the adaptor 16 is removed.
20 The gland nut 21 is threadably inserted into the upper portion of the valve spindle opening 15. A counter bore locates a brass spacer The gland nut is also preferably brass.
The jumper valve 22 is preferably gunmetal or alternately brass.
The retaining nut is preferably cast iron. The washer is about 72 mm in 25 diameter and preferably fabricated from neoprene having an 80 durometer hardness.
The threads 29 at the lower end of the spindle, like the threads along the lower interior of the valve spindle opening 15 may be single start right hand square threads, 5 threads per inch. The threads along the interior surface of the valve body outlet 14 are preferably 11 threads per inch Whitworth form. The threads on the exterior of the gland nut are preferably GB 7/8/22.
Prior references to cast iron mean generally a cast iron conforming to Australian Standard 2129 grade 14. References to gunmetal generally refer to a metal including 85% copper, 5% zinc, 5% lead and 5% tin.
Reference to brass generally denotes a metal conforming to Australian Standard 1566/1974 grade 385 C. It is preferred that the valve body have a minimal wall thickness of 8 mm.
rhk/0286E -4- While the right angle landing valve of the present invention has been described with reference to a particular embodiment Including particular materials and details of construction, these should be understood as having been provided by way of example and not as limitations to the scope or spirit of the Invention.
