Description

P/00/01 2 2a/5191 AUSTRALIA Regulation 3,2 Patents Act 19906 3 2"0 3
ORIGINAL
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION PETTY PATENT Invention Title: EXERCISE DEVICE 1. The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best CCmethod of performing it known to me:a. I" I This invention relates generally to exer-cise equipment and relates in particular to a portable resistance exercise device consisting of a rope with handles for use indoors or outdoors, According to the invention there is provided a portable resistance exercise device which comprises a Ipair of handgrips at both ends of g!t;a length of pliable material such as rope, cable or the like which is adapted to be moved to and fro around one or 10 more pulleys attached to a board when a person using the device pulls on the hand grips, Preeralythe deiecomprises apair o handles one on each end of a rope and a pair of spaced apart swivel pulleys are mounted in mutual longitudinal alignment upon the same side of and along the longitudinal centreline of the board.
Preferably, both of the handles are detachable 1 from a respective end of the rope, cable or -the like, Non-limitative examples of a practical arrangement and some applications of the exercise device of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanyi-ig drawings in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of the exercise device, Figure 2 is a diagrammatic representation of one 'usage application of the exercis-e device according to the invention, Figure 3 is a semi-diagrammnatic perspective view of another usage application of the device.
TNr PAT 0T'FF E A.CT.,\ -2- Figure 3A is a diag-rammatic side view of the device of Figure 3 as in us,3e, Figure 4 is diagrammatic side view of another usage application of the device, Referring to the drawings there is shown in Figure 1 a portable exercise device which comprises a pair of handgrips which in this example are preferably detachable handles 10, 11 either the handle or the end of the rope can be fitted with coroperating eye and a spring-loaded catch handle is attached to each end to of a length of pliable material such as rope, cable or O 4 0the like 12 which is preferably rope and which is adapted to be placed under and moved to and fro around two pulleys 13, 14 which are preferably swivel pulleys attached to a rigid rectangular member which can be a o board or plank 15 of wood or rigid synthetic polymeric material and which are rotatable through 360 degrees.
to o In the first mode of use shown in Figure 2, a person using the device for exercise is shown standing on the board 15 which has been placed upon the floor 16 (or ground if outside). N~ext a handle 10, 11 is gripped by each hand and each handle 10, 11, is pulled alternatively to move the rope 12 to and fro in opposite directions between the pulleys 13, 14, while at the same time bending the trunk to and fro sideways in an exercise known as side bends. In Figure 3 of the drawings the exercise device is used in conjunction w'ith a chair 17 whilst in a sedentary position and for this purpose the front two legs 17a, i17b, of the chair are -3placed upon the board before sitting upon the chair, Referring to Figure 3A, whilst in this sedentary position an exercise is performed combining leg kicks with a foot placed in the handle like stirrup whilst gripping the other handle with an opposite (left) hand and alternatively kicking the foot and pulling with the hand whilst /swinging an arm.
Referring to Figure 4 the board 15 is fixed or removably fastened to a wall 18 or removably clamped to the bottom of a door which is then closed and whilst o °sitting upon the floor; each handle is gripped by a hand and then pulled alternatively. Alternatively, the board 0 can be placed against a wall and the feet placed upon it to hold it against the wall and the exercise of Figure 4 repeated.
An advantage of the device of the invention is that when ropes are pulled at different angles or directions, different muscles or muscle area or muscle .o groups are worked. The invention is thus in effect a multi-pull gymn.
The device of the invention can be used for o 0 isometric muscle resistance exercises and the user can pull upon the rope hand grip with a left-hand or right-hand limb while resisting with the opposite or right-hand and left-hand limb applying as much resistance as is desired.
For increased muscle load, wrists or ankles can be loaded with weighted bands or arm and leg weights.
