Complete Specification for the invention entitled: WALL- AND/OR CEILING-CLADDING.
The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:- L
I
VM
The present invention relates to a wall- and/or ceilingcladding, and more particularly, but not exclusively, such cladding for ships.
This type of cladding is known in the present state of the art in the most diverse forms of embodiment. For most fields of application the fastening by means of clamping rails is adequate. In the case of ships, and in particular those of the navy, the loading stresses on them are much greater. It is then apparent, with claddings of previously known types, that the methods of fastening are quite inadequate so that they easily become loose and fall off due to vibration.
The present invention attempts to overcome one or more of the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a wall- and/or ceiling-cladding, comprising a plurality of Sadjacent modules or panels which abut along their sides and are held together by their bevelled lateral edges and/or longitudinal edges in clamping rails, wherein the clamping rails are fastened to a support and, between the clamping rails, there is/are provided one or more retaining rails carrying detents to engage with locking devices which are affixed to the panels and can be actuates from the outside or front of said panels.
A preferred form of embodiment shall now be described in greater detail, by way of example only, with regard to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional side-elevation of the novel ceiling-cladding of a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
I R.A 2
*U
/V 0 _e The novel wall- and/or ceiling-cladding is designated as in this Figure. Portions of two adjacent modules or panels 12 are shown in section, abutting along their edges 14 which are held together in a clamping rail 16. The clamping rail 16 is fastened to a conventional angle-iron support which is attached to the underside of the actual structural ceiling members (not depicted).
In order to achieve an outstanding resistance to mechanical shock, the cladding panels 12 are also fastened, by means of a tensioning closure, to a retaining angle-iron rail The tensioning closure is compi'ised of a detent bracket 22, which is eo 6 e o fl U t 3 rigidly attached to the retaining rail 20, and a locking device 24 which engages in the detent 22 and which may be actuated from the fr~ont side of the panel 12 by means of the knurled head 26 of the bolt, that is to say, the device can be simply locked or unlocked without the need for using any other tools whatsoever. The locking device 24 has a T-shaped locating stud 28 which is inserted through a drilled hole in the panel 12 and, in the locked position, places a spring (not depicted) under tension and is housed in a hole drilled throagh the detent bracket 22.
The retaining rail 20 is an angle-iron which, as shown at the left-hand side of the drawing, is fastened to the angle-iron support 18 by means of the hexagonal-head bolt 30. However, o the retaining rail 20 can also be welded onto the angle-iron support 18, as shown at the right-hand side of the drawing.
The detent bracket 22 is affixed to the retaining rail 20 by means of a bolt 32.
00 0 00 It will be apparent that the invention is adaptable for use o with cladding-panels of all arbitrary dimensions, up to a 0 size of 500 x 1000 millimetres, and with sound damping material attached to their inner surfaces. Special attention has been devoted to the provision of provision of four so. tensioning closures for each panel, one in each corner of the 060 panel. However, for larger panels, additional tensioning closures are provided at intervals along the long sides of the panels. The panels 12 are fabricated from sheet aluminium, resistant to corrosion by sea water, with a thickness of 1.5 millimetres. However, it is possible to imagine the use of other materials of different dimensions, provided that such materials fulfil the requirements of resistance to mechanical shock and have sound-damping properties. It is also conceivable that additional sound-damping material can be used in the space behind the cladding panels, without any difficulty.
41 -iad~ ~lisrmPBIB~B~BB~ The above embodiment can be easily installed and dismantled manually without tools. Furthermore, it possesses shockproof and sound-damping properties.
The preferred embodiment has an extra locking device for better fastening, in addition to the known clamping means, with which the modules are fastened to an additional retaining rail. This extra locking device can easily be manipulated from the outside of the module and does not require the use of any additional tools.
It is advantageous for the locking devices to be located near the corners and/or along the long sides of the modules so that they do not have a disturbing influence on the "otherwise good smooth overall impression of a plurality of modules mounted alongside each other.
Special consideration is given to the fact that the locking devices possess a knurled cheese-head bolt with a locating 0 stud and a spring, where the stud is inserted into a hole drilled into the detent bracket and the spring, in the locked position, is under tension with the formation of a S tensioning closure. The locking device can be easily removed from, or locked into, the detent bracket with a simple turn of the bolt in the desired direction.
