COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: Tool for connecting cable wires The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 'f iC -2- The invention relates to a tool for connecting cable j wires, in particular of communication cables, to cutting/clamping contacts.
I
5 EP 0040307 describes a tool for connecting electrically i insulated conductor wires. Said tool consists of a twoi j piece handle, in which a plunger displaceable ;i longitudinally in a slider is arranged. At the front end rof 'the plunger, at the plunger head, a wire cutting device comprising two shear arms is disposed. One shear arm is swiveling and is provided at the rear end with an oblique longitudinal slot, in which a pin fastened to the handle is guided. A longitudinal displacement of the plunger leads, thus to a swiveling movement of the shear arms. For pressing an insulated cable wire into a cutting/clamping contact provided in a connector bank, the plunger head is first set down on the connector bank.
SBy hand, the handle is pressed on in direction of the connector bank, until the cable wire is pressed-in into the contact slot of the cutting/clamping contact. The advance force acting on the handle effects a relative movement between plunger and handle as well as between the shear arm of the wire cutting device and the pin fastened to the handle, said pin sliding into the longitudinal slot and turning, thereby the movable shear arm, such that a cutting blade provided at its front end cuts the cable wire off.
Si This coupling process has the disadvantage that, in case of a faulty operation, the cutting process is performed, before the wire is introduced in the final position into i the clamping slot of the cutting/clamping contact. Thus results by the shorter cable length an insufficient guiding of the cable wire, whereby an inappropriate contact connection between the conductive core of the insulated cable wire and the cutting/clamping contact is 910213,rshspe.00Z28290.spe.2 -3formed. Furthermore, for thick cable wires, the strike mechanism is released, before the cable wire is pressedin completely into the contact slot of the cutting/clamping contact. Hereby, an inappropriate contact connection results.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool for connecting cable wires such as cable wires of communication cables, which shows improved reliability in providing proper contact connection.
According to the present invention there is provided a tool for connecting cable wires to cutting/clamping contacts, comprising a plunger displaceable longitudinally in the tool housing, a cutting device positioned at one end of the plunger and arranged to cut off the projecting portion of the cable wire after the cable wire has been clamped, a locking device and a release mechanism, said locking device being arranged to i 20 prevent longitudinal displacement of the plunger with Srespect to the tool housing, and said release mechanism being arranged to be actuated upon contact by a cutting/clamping contact or by a component substantially adjacent to the cutting/clamping contact to release the locking device to thereby allow longitudinal displacement |j of the plunger with respect to the tool housing.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by Sway of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- 910503,rsnspc.00-28290.spC,3 4444 4. 4 4 4 4 4 44 4,44 4 It 44 4 .4 1 4 4 44 44 4 4 4 4 4 4 ~4 I 4 4% 4 4 4 4 41 444444 4 4 4 444*44 4 4 14 44 4 4 4 4 -4- Fig. 1 a side view of the tool, partially in a sectional representation, Fig. 2 the front view, partially in a sectional representation, Fig. 3 the tool placed on a connector bank in a side view, and Fig. 4 the plunger head of the tool without cutting device, in a front view according to Fig. 2.
The tool 1 consists of a tool housing 12 formed by two plastic halfE-shells 14, 15, the tool housing 12 forming a han dl1e 16. The two housing half-shells 14, 15 are fastened with each other over screws 17. In the handle 16 provided with an aperture 33 at one front face 32, a plunger 2 and a slider 19 are arranged longitudinally displaceable. Furthermore a rotary knob 21 as fixing device in the handle 16 and a cutting device 29 at the front end of the plunger 2 at the plunger head 5 are provided. Such a tool is described in more detail in EP 0040307, to which ref r nce is explicitly made. In conftQo'/ derscr 4 e6 trast to the.,-k~-hown- plunger, the plunger 2 of the tool 1 is provided with a locking device 3 being arranged between two side walls 24, 25 of the plunger 2.
The locking device 3 consists of a latch 10 and an arm spring 22. The latch 10 is provided with a transverse borehole 23. Into said borehole 23 of the latch 10 and into two transverse boreholes of the side walls 24, of the plunger 2, an axle 26 is inserted, such that the latch 10 is arranged rotatably in the plunger 2, as shown particularly in Fig. 4. On this axle 26, the arm spring 22 is accommodated, one arm 27 of which being inserted in another borehole 37 of the latch 10 and the other arm 28 of which being supported on a transverse wall 30 of the plunger 2. The latch 10 accepts, thus, /4 /1 \iYr o I1 spring-loaded a defined position, in which the hook- S j shaped section of the latch engages behind the front ji wall 34 of the housing shell 15. In a side wall 31 of i' the latch 10, the tracer bar 9 is hooked-in, said tracer !i bar 9 being extended up to the front section of the plunger head 5 and being provided there, bent by 90°, as tracer 6. The tracer 6 is mounted between two press-in pieces 11 of the plunger head !j For connecting a cable wire 35 to a cutting/clamping contact 7 arranged in an connector bank 36, first the cable wire 35 is inserted over the contact slot 38 of the cutting/clamping contact 7. For pressing the cable ;j wire 35 in, a corresponding force is exerted by hand on !I the handle 16 in direction of the arrow 39 against the 11 force of the two compression springs 40, 41 provided in |i the handle 16, until the cable wire 35 is pressed-in into the contact slot 38. For cutting the projecting end of the cable wire 35 off, the cutting device 29 is arii ranged at the plunger head 5. This cutting-off process is effected by the longitudinal displacement of the plunger 2 in the handle 16, as the pin 42 fastened in the handle 16 slides into a longitudinal slot 43 of a shear arm 4 of the cutting device 29 and thereby deviates the movable shear arm 4.
Thus, the cutting device 29 cuts the projecting end of the cable wire 35 off in a predetermined distance to the 1j clamping connection.
As shown particularly in Fig. 3, only then a longitudinal movement of the plunger 2 in the handle 16 is obtained, when the locking device 3 is turned about the axle 26, and the latch 10 placed against the front face 32 of the handle 16 is, thus, unlocked. Turning the latch 10 is effected by the tracer 6 over the tracer bar 9. The tracer 6 is actuated only, when it is guaranteed that the cable wire 35 to be connected has attained its -6final position in the contact slot 38. Only then are the tracer 6 and, thus, the tracer bar 9 moved against the direction of the arrow 39 by support on the component 8 of the connector bank 36. By unlocking the latch 10 of Sthe locking device 3, the longitudinal displacement of Sthe plunger 2 is released, and the cutting-off process is initiated.
i! In case of multiple connections, if, two cable wires are to be connected to one cutting/clamping contact, the latch 10 of the unlocking device 3 can be uni locked even without actuation of the tracer 6. For this purpose, as shown in Fig. 2, a U-shaped wire clip 44 is i fastened outside at the housing shells 14, 15 as unlockj ing device 13 at its two ends of arms 45. By turning the wire clip 44 by hand, the central section of wire clip 44 presses against the latch 10, and turns, thus, the latch 10 of the locking device 3 inwards, the longitudinal displacement of the plunger 2 is, thus, released.
In casb, however, it is intended to release the longitudinal displacement of the plunger 2 neither by the tracer 6 nor by the unlocking device 13, the plunger 2 is fixed by turning the rotary knob 21. The mode of operation of the rotary Inob is. described in detail in i EP 0040307.
