la SURVEILLANCE DEVICE Surveillance devices are already known which are fed by an electric circuit. These devices can be sensitive to various phenomena such as for example the presence of smoke or abnormally high temperature, as in the case of fire detectors. These devices can also comprise a detector sensitive to infrared rays, for example to detect the presence of an intruder in an area under surveillance.
In known devices of this type it has heretofore been necessary to provide a connection cable to connect the detector to the circuit and moreover it was necessary to provide means to mount the detector, for example to a wall of the area under surveillance.
The present invention has for its object to avoid these installation measures. To this end, it has for its object a surveillance device of a region provided with an electric lighting installation, such as a lamp, having at least one illuminating element, like a bulb or fluorescent illuminating tube, this electric lighting installation 20 comprising at least one contact socket intended to work together with corresponding contact fittings of said illuminating element, the surveillance device comprising at 9 o least one detector sensitive to a phenomenan to be monitored, wherein the detector comprises a body provided with contact fittings similar to said corresponding contact fittings of the illuminating element, so as to be adapted to be connected to said at least one contact socket of the lighting installation in replacement of the illuminating element.

5 9S S. S o 9* *.4dJ 55 S. S .5.5 figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing show schematically and by way of example two embodiments of the device which is the object of the invention.
Figure 1 shows the first embodiment in which the surveillance device comprises a body or a housing 1 provided with a screw base 2 permitting placing it in a socket adapted to receive a light bulb. This device comprises a t ,\4 i" I r i aP,.
~i 2 detector disposed in the housing 1 and an emitter rendered active by this detector, this emitter being adapted to be of the type described in Swiss Patent No. 642208 corresponding to Australian Patent No. 56 11 65. In said Patent a signal transmitting installation is disclosed comprising an emitter and a receiver connected to the power supply circuit and which allows a signal transmission practically non-responsive to the interference of the mains, the signal to be transmitted having a higher frequency than that of the electrical supply circuit. The housing 1 also comprises an indicator lamp 3, for example a luminous diode, which indicates whether the surveillance device is correctly connected to the circuit. The emitted signal is received at another point in the circuit by a receiver apparatus provided for this purpose. It will be clear that the emitter could be provided for the emission of hertz waves which could be detected by any radio receiver provided for this purpose, or even that the emitter could simply produce an acoustic or optical alarm signal.
This luminous indicator is very useful because illuminating lamps are generally connected 'o the circuit by a switch and it will be clear that if the switch is open, a the surveillance device cannot function. This luminous indicator therefore permits the user to verify whether the switch has been inadvertently opened.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment in which the housing 4 of the surveillance device has substantially the form of a fluorescent lighting tube and may therefore be substituted for such a tube. This device has at each of the ends of the housing two prongs corresponding to the contact fingers with which lighting tubes are usually provided.
This tube has a detector 6 which is rotatably mounted ol the housing, so as to permit orienting it in the desired direction, no matter what the position of the prongs when the device is mounted in a socket for a luminescent tube.
WI 3- The device according to the invention is very advantageous, because not only does it permit avoiding all installation work, but also the lighting elements are most often located above a region to be subjected to surveillance, either on the ceiling of the premises, or against a wall or on a post for illumination of an outside region. Thus the installations in which such surveillance devices can be positioned are favourable to permit efficacious surveillance.
It is also possible to mount the surveillance device in a movable lamp, for example a bedside lamp or a work lamp.
In any event, the device has the advantage iof being energised by the circuit, which avoids a number of problems connected with energisation by batteries.
