Inventor: Address for Service: 7 Cattley Street, Burnie, TASMANIVA Peter CARTER SANDERCOCK, SMITH BEADLE 207 Riversdale Road, Box 410) Hawthorn, Victoria, 3122 Complete Specification for the invention entitled: METHOD OF AFFIXING HINGES TO DOORS The following statement Is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- 2 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 11 12 13 14 16 17 18 19 21 22 23 24 26 27 28 29 This invention relates to a method of affixing hinges to doors. In an alternative form the invention relates to doors with hinges affixed according to this method.
The use of butt hinges is a well known method of hanging doors from door jambs. In the case of doors for entrances to rooms for dwellings or offices the size and weight of the doors are such that secure means are required for attachment of the butt hinge to a door. For hollow core doors attachment is usual ly made by wood scr ws securing the flange of a butt hinge to a hardwood edge strip forming part of the door. In the case of solid timber doors the screws are simply secured to the edge of the door.
From a cost point of view it is desirable to use chipboard or particle board as the door which can be finished with decorative and/or protective laminates, or paint. owever, the use of such doors for entrances to roonis for dwellings or offices has been limited by the type of hinge which can be used. The usual type of hinge used with such doors is one where one flange of the hinge is secured to a face of the door near the edge making the appearance unattractive.
The use of butt hinges whilst more attractive as they are concealed when the door is closed has been unsatisfactory as conventional screws are unable to secure the flange of the butt hinge sufficiently well in view of the weight ot the door and forces exerted on the screws. Even the use of expanding type attachment bolts commonly used to join together particle board sheets have been found to be unsatisfactory.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an 870223,dgspe.001,carter, 3 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 12 o 13 14 16 17 18 19 21 22 23 24 26 27 improved method of securing butt hinges to the edges of doors made of particle board or the like.
Accordingly, this invention provides, in one form, a method of securing a flange of a butt hinge to the edge of a door by making edge holes in the edge of the door to a predetermined depth wherein the position of the edge holes corresponds to the holes in the flange, and wherein the dimensions of the holes are sufficient to accommodate a connecting bolt with its head located on the said flange when in contact with the edge; making side holes from either side of the door wherein each of the side holes is positioned such that it intersects one of the edge holes, -s L -e_ and wherein the e--g-e\holes are so dimensioned that each of them can accommodate a cross-member, placing a connecting bolt in an edge hole, placing a cross-member in the intersecting side hole and wherein the cross-member and bolt are adapted for attachment to each other, and wherein the form of attachment is such that the head of the bolt may be drawn towards the cross-member, and attaching the connecting bolt to the cross member such that the flange is securely located in place on the edge of the door.
Preferably the side holes are at least 40 mm, and more preferably at least 50 mm. perpendicular distance from the said edge.
Preferably, the cross-member is a locking head adapted to attach to the bolt and be drawn towards the head of the bolt by rotation of the locking head.
The invention also provides a door with a butt hinge affixed according to the aforementioned method of the

2 The invention will be further described by reference to 3 a preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawing.
4 Figure 1 is a, perspective schematic drawing showing a butt hing;% attached to a door.
6 Referring to the drawing a butt hinge 1 is shown in 7 contact with an edge 2 of a particle board door 3 (shown in 8 part only). Edge holes 4 of circular cross-section and of 9 diameter 5 mm. and of length 42 mm. are located in the edge 2, side holes 5 of circular cross-section of diameter 15 mm.
11 are located to intersect with edge holes 4. A connecting 12 bolt 6 has a head 9 which fits and is retained by the 13 counter sunk portion of holes 7 of flange 8. The bottom of 14 the connecting bolt 6 has a collar 10 and neck portion 11.
A cross-member 12 has a recess 13 of sufficient size to fit 16 the collar 10 when the connecting bolt 6 is located in edge 17 hole 7. A slot 14 is provided adjacent 'to the recess 13 18 and the slot opens to a central portion of the cross-member.
19 The radial thickness of that part of the cross-member on either side of the slot increases as the distance from the 21 recess increased. In use the collar 10 is located in the 22 central portion via the recess and clockwise twisting of the 23 cross-member by up to 1800 causes the connecting bolt to be 24 drawn towards the cross-member thereby holding the flange 8 89062n ?ir.np ni; rr- 01 L_
M
89 6 0 Ii tn it T1n- c 1 securely to the edge of the door 2. Suitable connecting 2 bolts and cross-member are described in Australian Patent 3 Applications Nos. 72,332/81 and 10,288/83. Usually a 4 rebate is provided in the edge of the door for the flange to provide a flush fitting of the flange with the edge. The 6 side hole can be fitted with a cap after the hinge is 7 affixed or alternatively that part of the side hole above 8 the cross-member can be filled and appropriately finished.
9 It will be appreciated that the connecting bolt and crossmember are not necessarily separate units and may be the one 11 unit. In this case the cross-member may be pivotable such 12 that in one configuration it can fit along the edge hole.
13 After insertion the cross-member is pivoted (for example by 14 900) to prevent passage along the edge hole and the connecting bolt is tightened by screwing a threaded section 16 of the connecting bolt to a mating thread in the cross- 17 member. The method of the present invention enables the 18 butt hinge to be securely fixed such that considerable 19 forces may be resisted. It will be appreciated that the attachment method of the present invention does not rely on 21 the composition of the door material and will be 22 satisfactory provided sufficient compressional strength is 23 provided by the door material. The length of the 24 connecting bolt provides a means of adjusting for varying strengths of materials. In practice a template can be 26 conveniently used to mark the location of the holes.
27 The entire contents of the provisional 28 specifications lodged with Australian Patent Applications of 29 which this is the complete specification are hereby imported 870223, dgspe. 001 ,carter, 6 1 into this specification and form part of the disclosure of 2 this specification. The claims form part of the disclosure 3 of this specification.
