Complete Specification for the invention entitled: ROLLING PROCESS FOR APPLYING TUBING TO SHEETING The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us -2- Rolling Process For Applying Tubing To Sheeting The present invention relates to applying tubing, particular copper tubing to sheeting, particular copper sheeting. The invention is particularly applicable to heat exchangers where heat from hot gasses in a duct is transferred to fluid in a relatively small bore tubing. It will be understood that the invention may be utilised in any other application relating to improvement of conductivity between tubing and sheeting, and also improving the strength of the connection there-between.
The invention will be described with reference to a heat exchanger application by way of example only, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view from above of a typical heat exchanger.
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view of a rolling S process according to the invention; and ,Fig. 3 is a schematic diagram showing the after C C, effects of the process of the invention.
The heat exchanger includes ducting 10, preferably made of copper sheet, for carrying hot gases from a gas ~burner or like (not shown) into contact with small bore tubing 11, preferably of copper surrounding the sheet duct Preferably, the tubing 11 has fins thereon to criss 25 cross one end of the ducting (not shown) to form a conventional heat exchanger arrangement. Such a heat exchanger will be familiar to those people particularly those skilled in instantaneous gas heaters.
:The present invention sets out to improve the area of ocr t 30 contact and as a result improves the thermal conductivity between the small bore tubing 11 and the sheet forming the ducting 10 of the heat exchanger. The forming of the sheeting and the location of the tubing in close contact with the sheeting will also serve to improve the physical strength of the ducting.
Presently, the small bore tubing is simply wrapped around the duct and soldered or welded thereto.
-3- Thus the area of contact between the tubing and the sheeting of the duct is, at best, line contact (such as shown in the "BEFORE" drawing in Figure 3) and the resultant thermal conductivity between the two parts is comparatively poor. The present invention sets out to impart surface to surface contact between the two parts. However, it is not possible to press the copper tubing against the surface of the ducting as this may result in flattening or cracking of the tubing. Furthermore, with existing arrangements the longevity of the tubing is lowered in as much as the comparatively insecure attachment of the tubing to the sheeting cannot withstand the continual heat stresses imparted thereto during the lifetime of the heat exchanger.
The objective of the invention is simply achieved by placing the tubing and ducting (which parts have already been positioned relative to each other) in a pair of rollers SI which act to press the tube and the sheet into close contact without actually applying any squeezing stress to the tubing. This is achieved by using a pair of rollers, one of which is shaped to accommodate the tube configuration, and the other shaped with a rib portion to form and wrap the ~sheet of the ducting around the tube, at least partially, r from the other side of the sheet to which the tube is contacting the sheet.
The configuration of the rollers is depicted in Fig.
44 2 wherein the tube dye 13 includes a circumferential groove having a dimension matching the configuration of the tube and applying even pressure to the tube over its entire surface area in contact with the roller against the sheet.
The sheet dye 14 includes a contoured circumferential surface 15 which also matches the configuration of the tube facing the sheeting for pressing the sheet into surface to surface contact with the tube during the rolling process.
-4- Thus the increased surface area of contact as best shown in the after figure of Fig. 3 is considerably increased with resultant improvement in thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger and also improvement in the strength of the construction.
