MADDERN ASSOCIATES, 345 King William Street, Adelaide, South Australia, 5000 Complete Specification for the invention entitled: 9 "HAY ROLL SPREADER" The following statement is a full description of this Invention, including the best method of performing it known toxmca us.
i 1 This invention relates to a hay roll spreader which is useful for feeding hay from a round bale.
A round bale or hay roll frequently needs to be spread out on the ground as a relatively narrow wind row which will function as feed for livestock, for example sheep or cattle. The round bales are very heavy, and it is also desirable that they should be capable of being easily lifted onto a spreader, and fed from that spreader upon trailing of the spreader behind a motor vehicle.
With the object of achieving a simple and satisfactory device which can effect these functions, *15 in an embodiment of this invention a hay roll spreader comprises a vehicle having a chassis and ground support wheels, a conveyor carried by the vehicle, lifting means .O on the vehicle operable to effect lifting of a round bale and depositing the bale on the conveyor, and drive means coupling a said wheel to the conveyor and effective to cause actuation of the conveyor upon rotation of that wheel, so constructed and arranged that such actuation 0* of the conveyor will cause rotation of the round bale when thereon and discharge of the outer convolution of the bale from the vehicle onto the ground.
An embodiment of the invention is described hereunder in some detail with reference to, and is C illustrated in, the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a rear perspective view of a hay roll spreader showing lifting forks in their down or loading position, FIG. 2 is a front perspective view of same, FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the hay bale lifting forks extended, and FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing a hay bale on its conveyor, and the lifting forks in their upper 2

positions.
In this embodiment, there is provided a hay roll spreader 10 which comprises a pair of ground-engaging wheels 11, a slat-type conveyor 12 which moves upwardly and forwardly within a cradle area 13, and a pair of rearwardly directed forks 14 for lifting a round bale of hay 15 into the cradle area 13, where it will be supported by the slat conveyor 12. The slat conveyor 12 comprises a plurality of spikes designated 16 which project from slats 17 of the conveyor 12, and these engage the undersurface of the outermost convolution of the hay bale, when the hay bale is within the cradle area 13. The slat conveyor is continuous, and moves upwardly and forwardly, terminating below a roller 18, and S. traversing beneath the cradle area for its return traverse. The slat conveyor is driven by a dog clutch from one of the ground-engaging wheels 11. The drive means between The slat conveyor and the wheel is by way of a roller chain 21 to a sprocket 22 on a rear conveyor shaft 23.
0 The forward end of the slat conveyor traverse terminates beneath a bar 26, the bar 26 being set above the rear end of the slat conveyor but below the roller 18, and hay is fed between the bar 26 and the roller 18, and discharges onto the ground between the wheels. The 1 f hay which is already on the ground is traversed by the spreader 10 as it is towed by a towing vehicle.
Quite often there is a requirement to handle bales of different length, and for this reason there are provided a pair of cheek plates the space between the cheek plates being adjustable by screw threaded adjustment means (not shown). The cheek plates 27 are spaced apart a distance slightly in excess of the length or height of the bale) f ossS coUin1 Lo O wo urAcwX RJ K 3 7/.
It is most desirable if not essential that hay from a bale should be lowered onto the ground as a relatively narrow wind row, and to achieve this result, the forward end of the spreader is provided with a plurality of finger-like rods 28 which narrow the effective width of the strip of hay as it is unrolled from the round bale.
A bale can be very heavy and it is desirable that lifting onto the spreader so that it lies within the cradle area is achieved mechanically. In this embodiment there is provided a crank handle 30 on a shaft 31 carrying a winch drum 32 at its other end, and a cable a 33 on winch drum 32 couples to the forks 14 via a lever s...15 arm 34, the arm 34 and forks 14 being on a pivot shaft 35 so that upon rotation of the handle 30, forks 14 pivot aa* about their forward ends and raise a bale 15 supported by them, from the ground up into the cradle area 13.
This avoids the need for the liftiig of a heavy weight by hand.
a a. In use, the forks 15 are extended, and backed beneath a round bale 15 when it is lying on the ground, a a. and the crank handle 30 actuated to lift a round bale from the ground into the cradle area 13. The spreader is then towed to the area where discharge is required, C Q and discharge is effected by engaging the dlog clutch by its clutch arm 37, which causes motion of the conveyor chain as the spreader is towed behind a vehicle.
The motion causes the bale of hay to rotate about its axis due to the movement of the slat conveyor 12, and the hay is deposited on the ground in a reduced width wind row, which is straddled by the ground-engaging wheels 11.
The invention has a number of advantages over prior art, and for example the machine will be found to handle both hard and soft centred bales efficiently.
