ORIGINAL COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT INVENTION TITLE: CORDLESS LAWN MOWER THIS INVENTION RELATES TO IMPROVEMENTS IN LAWN MOWING EQUIPMENT. THE USE OF POWERED LAWN MOWERS CAUSES AIR POLLUTION DUE TO THE USE OF BOTH INEFFICIENT PETROL ENGINES, AND MOWING METHODS. ALSO, THE EXISTING ROTARY SLASHING BLADE MOWING METHOD, AND THE PETROL ENGINE, CAUSE 5 HIGH LEVELS OF NOISE POLLUTION IN THE COMMUNITY. THE PRESENT INVENTION PROVIDES A LOW POWER METHOD OF MOWING, WHICH HAS NO AIR POLLUTION EFFECT, VERY LOW NOISE LEVELS, AND USES APPROXIMATELY ONE TWENTIETH OF THE POWER OF CONVENTIONAL MOWERS. THE POWER USAGE OF THE INVENTION ENABLES THE PRACTICAL USE OF STORAGE BATTERIES TO OPERATE A 10 LAWN MOWER OVER A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME. IN ADDITION, THE LOW POWER USAGE OF THE INVENTION ENABLES STORAGE BATTERY POWER TO BE USED FOR AUTOMATIC AND REMOTE OPERATION OF MOWERS. THIS WILL ENABLE PERSONS WHO ARE AT PRESENT NOT PHYSICALLY ABLE TO MOW THEIR OWN LAWN TO DO SO. THE DEVICE, WHICH CONSTITUTES THE INVENTION, IS COMPOSED OF AN ARRAY OF 15 CIRCULAR MULTI BLADE CUTTING DEVICES, EACH OF WHICH IS INDEPENDENTLY DRIVEN BY AN ULTRA HIGH SPEED, LOW POWERED ELECTRIC MOTOR. EACH CIRCULAR MULTI BLADE CUTTING DEVICE IS OF RELATIVELY SMALL DIAMETER, TYPICALLY, BUT NOT LIMITED TO 75 MILLIMETRE. THE MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION . OF THE CUTTING DEVICES IS TYPICALLY STEEL, NOMINALLY, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, . 20 0.5 MILLIMETRE IN THICKNESS. THE CUTTING EDGES, PERIPHERAL AND LONGITUDINAL, OF THE CUTTING DEVICES, ARE GROUND TO A SHARP EDGE. * THE SPEED OF ROTATION OF THE CUTTING DEVICES IS TYPICALLY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY, LIMITED TO FIFTEEN THOUSAND REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE. TYPICALLY, EACH CUTTING DEVICE MAY HAVE FOUR OR MORE BLADES. IN A * 25 CONFIGURATION HAVING SIX BLADES ON THE CUTTING DEVICE, AND A ROTATIONAL SPEED OF 15000 R.P.M., THE NUMBER OF CUTS PER SECOND PER CUTTING DEVICE IS 1500.
- 2 TYPICALLY, AN ARRAY OF FOUR OF THE CUTTING DEVICES, MOUNTED IN LINE , AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL OF A MOWING DEVICE, WOULD DEVELOP 6000 CUTS PER SECOND ACROSS THE PATH OF THE MOWER. EXISTING ROTARY MOWERS OPERATING AT 10000 R.P.M. DEVELOP 334 CUTS PER 5 SECOND ACROSS THE PATH OF THE MOWER. THE ACTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION, BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH CUTTING RATE, MAY BE LIKENED TO A CIRCULAR SAWING ACTION. AS AN INDICATION, WITH A MOWER USING THE SIX BLADE CUTTING DEVICE WITH A ROTATIONAL SPEED OF 15000 R.P.M., AND A FORWARD MOWING RATE OF HALF A METER PER SECOND, THE DEPTH 10 OF EACH CUT WOULD BE 0.34 MILLIMETRE. IF A 12 BLADED CUTTER CONFIGURATION WAS USED IN THIS APPLICATION, THE DEPTH OF EACH CUT WOULD BE 0.17 MILLIMETRE. THESE SMALL INCREMENTS OF CUTTING ALLOW THE USE OF LOW POWERED MOTORS TO OPERATE THE CUTTING DEVICE OF THE CURRENT INVENTION. 15 IN ONE FORM OF THE INVENTION, A SINGLE ELECTRIC MOTOR IS FASTENED BY ITS DRIVE END MOUNTING HOLES TO A FLAT MOUNTING PLATE, WHICH HAS BEEN DRILLED TO ENABLE THE DRIVE SHAFT OF THE MOTOR TO PROTRUDE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE TO WHICH THE MOTOR IS MOUNTED. A CIRCULAR, MULTI BLADE, FLAT CUTTER IS CONNECTED TO THE PROTRUDING 20 SHAFT BY MEANS OF A HOLE AND CLAMPING DEVICE AT THE CUTTER CENTRE. THE MOUNTING PLATE HAS HOLES DRILLED NEAR ITS PERIMETER, ENABLING IT TO BE FIXED TO THE BODY OF A MOWER. . IN ANOTHER FORM, AN ARRAY OF TWO OR MORE ELECTRIC MOTORS ARE FASTENED TO A FLAT MOUNTING BAR, WHICH HAS BEEN DRILLED TO ENABLE THE DRIVE 25 SHAFTS OF THE MOTORS TO PROTRUDE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE TO WHICH THE MOTORS ARE MOUNTED. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CENTRES OF THESE HOLES MUST BE GREATER THAN THE DIAMETER OF THE CUTTERS WHICH ARE ATTACHED TO THE MOTOR SHAFTS. A CIRCULAR, MULTI BLADE CUTTER IS CONNECTED TO EACH OF THE PROTRUDING MOTOR SHAFTS BY MEANS OF A HOLE AND CLAMPING DEVICE AT 30 THE CENTRE OF EACH CUTTER. THE FLAT MOUNTING BAR HAS HOLES DRILLED AT ITS PERIMETER, ENABLING IT TO BE FIXED TO THE BODY OF THE MOWER.
- 3 THE ELECTRIC MOTORS MAY BE POWERED BY DIRECT CURRENT, OR BY AN ALTERNATING CURRENT. THE DIRECT CURRENT MOTORS ARE POWERED FROM STORAGE BATTERIES MOUNTED ON THE MOWER BODY. ALTERNATING CURRENT MOTORS ARE POWERED FROM STORAGE BATTERIES MOUNTED ON THE MOWER BODY, 5 OPERATING A STATIC INVERTER WHICH PRODUCES THE ALTERNATING CURRENT SOURCE. THE MULTI BLADE CUTTER MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION MAY BE STEEL, OR HAVE PLASTIC BLADES AND CENTRE, WITH SHARPENED STEEL TIPS.
