Description

Title Improvements in Catch Plates The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- Field of the Invention This invention relates to locks for patio doors sliding glass doors) and in particular to means of supporting the catch plate Summary of the Invention According to the invention there a catch plate for a sliding door lock mountable to an element defining in-part the opening associated with the door, said catch plate comprising a vertically elongated first catch plate portion engageable by a lock portion mountable to the door, said first catch plate portion being supported by a second catch plate portion mountable to the said element, said second catch plate portion being characterized by a first fixing aperture displaced rearwardly of the first catch plate portion to facilitate mounting to the element and at least one a second fixing aperture disposed from the door to facilitate mounting of the first catch plate portion.
Preferably, the first fixing aperture is rearwardly disposed of the vertical orthogonal axis of the first catch plate portion.
Preferably, the catch plate includes a return portion to resist relative displacement between the second catch plate portion and element.
Preferably, the second catch plate portion includes at least one first wing adjacent the element and extending in a plane parallel with the face of the wing and characterized by a first fixing aperture displaced rearwardly of the first catch plate portion to facilitate mounting to the element and at least one wing extending away from the element and characterized by a second fixing aperture disposed from the door to facilitate mounting of the first catch plate portion.
Preferably, the first catch plate portion comprises a common catch plate having shoulders by which to be engaged by pivotal bolts and fixing apertures to facilitate mounting of the first catch plate portion to the outer surface of the element.
Preferably, the second catch plate portion comprises an accessory comprising a pressed metal part.
According to the invention there is a lock substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Description of the Drawings Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of the catch plate mounted to the element viewed partly from the rear Figure 2 is an isometric view of the catch plate mounted to the element viewed partly from the rear Figure 3 is an isometric view of the catch plate mounted to the element viewed partly from the front Fig 4 is an isometric view of the second catch plate portion viewed partly from the rear, Fig 5 is an isometric view of the lock portion mountable to the door with extended pivotal bolts and an associated common catch plate.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments The invention comprises a means of better attaching a common catch plate 1 for a sliding door to the frame surrounding the opening this frame including a vertical closing frame element 2 that the door abuts when the door is closed. The closing element comprises an aluminium extrusion having a first channel 3 to accept a sliding glass door and often a second channel 4 to accept a security door.
The first channel is defined by an interior wall 4 and an intermediate wall 5 and a vertical floor 6. When the door is closed the door closing edge lies between the walls 4 and 5 and abuts the floor 6. A lock supported on the closing edge of the door has one and preferably two arm 30 which project from the lock portion 31 mountable to the door to engage in recesses 7 and 8. The arms have hooked end portions 32, which engage behind vertical shoulders 9 and 10 of the catch plate.
The catch plate, commonly is attached to the face of channel 4 by screws 11 which have passage through apertures 12 in the side of the catch plate but this method of fixing is inadequate since a) the wall thickness of the aluminium into which the screw fastens is very thin, and b) the inner end 13 of the screw cannot protruded far into the channel 3 because of the presence of the door and it is desirable that it does not protrude at all. These limitations cause inadequate mounting of the catch plate to the element a deficiency that is very common in patio doors.
The invention provides a fastening plate 14 having a hooked (return) end 15 to hook behind the wall 4 to prevent the fastening plate from being displaceable in the opening direction of the door, and side apertures 17 disposed in relation to the wall 4 and floor 6 such that screws 16 fitted through the apertures pass below the floor 6 so as not to pass into channel 3 so as to preclude contact with the door.
The fastening channel has angled return portions 17 that have apertures 18 to accept screws 19 that extend from the catch plate to fasten the catch plate to the return portions. By this means, the catch plate is attached by 4 screws.
By this means, an improved method of fastening is provided which does not have screws protruding into channel 3 Preferably the fastening plate is attached to the opening frame at the time of manufacture of the door and opening frame.
Preferably the fastening plate is manufactured from steel.
In another embodiment, the hooked return 15 has a return portion 21 having apertures 20 through which additional screws are applied to attach the fastening plate to the building material behind the closing frame element 2. The closing frame element 2, in this case would preferably have an aperture to provide passage for the screws including the screw head.
Throughout this specification and claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or group of integers but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers.
Throughout this specification and claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the positional prepositions such as rear, forward are used to assist in description of the preferred embodiments and have in general no absolute significance.
