Abstract

Furnace for melting down scrap iron and similar ferrous materials comprising a tiltable vessel (1') with a refractory-lined hearth and at least partially water-cooled side walls, a removable cover (19'), at least one electrode (17'), and a discharge hole (11'), and which can be fitted with several nozzles (35) insertable into the side walls and arranged in the region of the hearth. To obtain a multi-purpose furnace and reduced installation costs, the vessel (1') can be tilted about a horizontal axis (2) located in the region of the cover and can move horizontally perpendicular to the axis (2). The discharge hole (11') is arranged in the region of the edges between the hearth and the side wall in the median plane of the vessel located in the direction of movement, can be closed from the outside, and is directed downwards at least when the vessel is in the tilted position. A scumming hole (33) is arranged above the hearth approximately opposite the discharge hole (11') when the vessel is in the normal position. At least some of the nozzles (35) are designed as carbon-oxygen nozzles.
