Patents Act COM'NPLETE SPECIFICATION 0RIG INA L Class, hu. Class Application Number- Lod!eed: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: .4 Namne of Applicant: Schutz-Werke GmnbH Co. KG Actual Inventor(s): [Jdo Schutz Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMJONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade M~ark Attorneys 367 Collins Sirpet .Melboturne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: REUSEARLE DRUNM MIADE OF SHEET NMETAL Our Ref 508129 POP Code: 20412/15152) The following statement is a fill dlescriptioln of this invention. incIling~ the best method of performing it known to ap)Ilicani~(s; Reusable drum made of sheet metal The invention concerns reusable drums made of sheet metai, which for the initial use are constructed as drums with bungs, have a top end firmly joined with the drum body, the top end having a filling and discharging bung, Which drums can be reconditioned for further use as a drum with lid having a bong lid or having a simple lid with clamping lock to fasten the lid on the opening edge of the drum body (DE 315 39 656 C2).
The strict legal regulations regarding the protection of the environment require the transition from one-way packing drums to reusable ones like, for example, drums made of steel or plastics, the switching over to packing drums with larger capacities wiLh the aim of reducing the residues, and the
L
development of new reusable packing drums which can be discharged to an optimum degree and easily cleaned with the aim of relieving the environment from noxious substances, can be reconditioned and for the purpose of reconditioning as well as wi for an orderly disposal by a noxious substance-free destroying, e.g. by burning, or for the purpose of reusing of~the manufacturing material.
The development of reconditionable reusable drums made of sheet metal resulted in reusable drums of this type, which can be converted after the first transporting and/or first storage of environmentally dang~rous fluids of a dangerous material of a high classification after the discharging of the dangerous fluid for a further use for granulated or powdery as well as pasty materials of a dangerous material of a low classification into drums with lids, which facilitate both the filling and the discharging of the filled material and which offer the possibility of a direct action on the contents of the container, e.g. by means of a simple agitating device, in 35 contrast to the drums with bungs having a top end which is seamed with the drum body, so that the filled material can be stirred only with an elaborate agitating device, e.g.
collapsible propeller, which can be inserted into the drum through the filling and discharging hung.
In the case of a drum with bunq known from DE 35 39 656 C2 the hung lid is placed by interposing a seal onto the opening edge of the drum body flanged to form an edge bead. T:1he bung lid is surrounded by a folding lid, which has recesses in the region of the bung of the bung lid and whose edge engages the bung lid firmly and securely from behind and is seamed around the edge bead of the drum body. In the case of this drum first the hung lid is placed onto the edge of the drum body like a lid of a drum with lid, and the actual joint effected by a seam, which can withstand high loads, is achieved by means of the seam lid covering the seam of the hung lid- Thus first of all the stability and the strength of the head region of a conventional drum with hung is achieved, while the special folding lid further increases the strength due to its stability. After the removal of the folding lid, which will destroy the strength of the drum, this drum with hung can be handled in the case of a closed hung as a conventional drum with lid, whose lid can be removed and after its positioning can be pressed on and sealed by means of a conventional clamping ring.
The main disadvantages of this known drum with hung, which can .5 be reconditioned into a drum with lid with a removable hung lid, are that when the drum is used as a drum with hung on the first occasion a special folding lid, making the drum more costly, is necessary for the fastening of the hung lid on the opening edge of the drum body and that when the drum with hung is reconditioned into a drum with lid the forcibly destroyed seam cover becomes a sheet metal waste, which has to be disposed of resulting in expenses, or has to be reprocessed.
The object of the invention is to develop a cost-effective reusable drum made of sheet metal, which after its first use as a drum with hung for the transport and storage of environmentally dangerous. fluid materials of a dangerous material of high classification can be reconditioned costeffectively for further use into a drum with lid for granulated and powdery as well as pasty materials and, possibly, also for fluids of a dangerous material of low classification.
S This objective is achieved according to the invention by a reusable drum made of sheet metal having the features of patent claim 1.
The sub-claims contain advantageous and useful developments of the invention.
The reusable drum made of sheet metal according to the invention is characterised in that after the initial use as a a drum with bung for materials of a dangerous material of high classification it can be cost-effectively reconditioned for the further use as a drum with lid for materials of a lower S dangerous material classification without sheet metal waste occurring. Furthermore, with the new drum, used in the most common construction both as a drum with bung and as drum with lid, having a drum capacity of 213 L according to DIN 6643, ISO shipping containers can be optimally loaded due to the favourable external dimensions.
The invention is explained in the following based on drawings, which show individually in: e Fig.l a longitudinal section of the reusable drum constructed as a drum with bung with enlarged cut-aways, Fig.2 the top end of the drum with bung, Fig.3 the top end separated from the drum body when the drum with bung is reconditioned to become a drum with lid, Fig.4 the drum with lid with a bung cover secured by means of a clamping ring closure on the opening edge of the body of the drum, as well as a longitudinal section of the reusable drum constructed as a drum with lid.
The drum 1 with hung illustrated in Figs.1 and 2 made of sheet.
metal has a cylindrical drum body 2 with rolled and stiffening beads 3, and is tightly sealed by means of a seamed bottom end 4. The upper section 5 of the drum body 2 is necked in towards the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2, which is constructed as an outwardly rolled edge.
The top end 7 of the drum I with bung has a filling and discharging bung 8 as well as a ventilating bung 9, which can be closed by means of bung plugs 10, 11 constructed as screw-in plugs. The top end 7 is placed with its rolled external edge 12 on the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 and is seamed together with this. The rolled opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 and the S correspondingly rolled external edge 12 of the top end 7 are tightly welded together in the region of their end sections 13, 14, while the top end 7 can be additionally sealed fluid-tight against the drum body 2 by means of a sealing material provided between the two edges 6, 12.
i When reconditioning the drum 1 with bung according to Figs.l and 2 to convert it into a drum 15 with lid according to Figs.4 and 5, according to the illustration shown in Fig.3 the top end 7 is cut off from the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 by means of aseparating device 16, e.g. a rotating tool, without producing any waste, while the separating cut 17-17 is at the height or in the region of the centre 18 of the rolled opening S edge 6 of the drum body 2 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 19-19 of the drum.
The top end 7, separated from the drum 1 with bung serves as a bung lid 20, which in the enclosed state of the drum 15 with lid is secured on the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 by means of a clamping ring 21 by interposing a seal 23 introduced into the lid edge 22.
4 The drum 15 wizh li can be fitted out with an internal sneatn, described as an inliner, made of a plastic film, which is pulled over the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 and is clamped between that and the lid seal 23.
Furthermore, the bung lid 20 of the drum 15 with lid may be provided with an internal coating 25 made of a plastic film or a compound metal/plastic film.
D) It is also possible to introduce an internal sheath 24 in the drum I with bung before the welding of the top end 7 to the opening edge 6 of the drum body 2 and to furnish the top end 7 with an internal coating To accommodate drums 1 with bungs and drums 15 with lids in an ISO shipping container in the case of the most common drum construction having a capacity of 213 L according to DIN 6643, the top section 5 of the drum body 2 can be preferably neckedin towards the opening edge 6 in such a manner that the outside .'diameter D of the clamping ring 21 inclu~ng its lever lock is equal to or less than the diameter D of 585 mm of the rolled and stiffening beads 3 of the drum body 2.
