Abstract

This boat was designed over many years to suit a novel combination of requirements which are not satisfied by any other product on the market. A NOVEL COMBINATION OF REQUIREMENTS; 1. A multi-purpose boat for sailing paddling and surfing. 2. Small enough and light enough to fit on car roof racks. This enables opportunistic enjoyment of the water without the need to organize crew trailers a partner for lifting boat ramps and so on. 3. Simple to assemble for sailing. 4. Easy to sail. B DESIGN SOLUTION; The main hull is 2300 long by 635 wide and shaped to provide buoyancy for a person up to 95 kilos. A mast and sail and polynesian style outriggers can be easily attached to the main hull to transform it from a surf ski or paddle trainer into a sailboat. C DESIGN ELEMENTS; Main Hull 1. The main hull is designed to utilize the combination of hull deck and seating mouldings as a three dimensional space frame to minimize weight. This makes the boat exceptionally strong and light. Stress applied to the hull is instantaneously transferred by three dimensional triangulation to many other areas by the plastic closed cell foam filling of appropriate formulation which enables a thin skin to reduce weight. The principle is similar to the sandwich yacht hull but taken to the extreme of efficiency possible because the entire hull and not merely the skin is completely filled with foam. 2. The seating position is low compared to other paddle trainers which makes the boat exceptionally stable. Because the user is therefore very close to the water a short paddle can be used. The short paddle fits in the car cabin and does not need to go on the roof racks which is an extra convenience. The seat is the optimum depth for comfort without straining the back or hips. This has been designed by experience. 3. The hull shape is designed for multi-purpose use. The bottom is fairly flat with intermediate degree of rocker which makes the hull very manoeuvrable for surfing. The bow swells fairly suddenly which makes the hull rise quickly on a wave. The stern tapers rapidly which allows the user to lean back into a wave at commencement of the ride to prevent pitchpoling. The hull may be round bottom or have a chine for about half the length. 4.
