Abstract

A process and device are disclosed for coating elongated or slightly curved metallic substrates with a preferably powdery, plastic-based coating agent. An effective, energy saving coating process that avoids the danger of dust explosion has the following steps: (a) the substrate to be coated is fixed; (b) the substrate to be coated and/or the coating device are moved in a working direction; (c) the substrate to be coated is heated in a localised area by means of a gas flame up to a temperature from 80 DEG C to 900 DEG C; (d) at a defined distance behind the gas flame, the working area located between the gas flame and the following area, in which the coating agent is applied, is sealed by a partition and by a blocking layer made of a non-flammable, gaseous medium and formed between the partition and the surface of the substrate to be coated in order to prevent powder-loaded air from igniting; (e) the coating agent is applied on the hot metallic surface of the substrate to be coated in a manner known per se; and (f) when the coating process is finished, the coated substrate is released. This process is the first that allows metallic substrates to be coated by localised heating of the substrate by means of a gas flame.
