Abstract
A process and a device for the biological conversion (composting) of organic waste materials, in particular from the catering sector, provide a treatment in at least two chambers (7, 8) which are separated from each other. In the first chamber (7), the waste materials which have been introduced are treated only until their conversion into biomass has progressed to a particular intermediate stage. Some of this partly converted material is then transferred into the second chamber (8) for final composting. Fresh waste materials which have been introduced into the first chamber (7) are treated together with the remainder of the partly converted material. Since the number of active microorganisms in the first chamber (7) is always high, the conversion process of the freshly introduced waste materials is started immediately. The heat-insulating housing (1), which contains the chambers (7, 8), is preferably rotatable about a horizontal axis (3) in a targetted, alternating manner so as to mix the material, and grinding gears (12, 12') are provided for fine comminution of the material. If desired, the composted material can be dried and/or sterilised in a third chamber. A couplable container unit (40) receives the material which has been composted in the second chamber (8). After having been removed from the treatment device, the container unit (40) can be combined with other such units to form a transport unit ready for removal by an HGV. The apparatus allows waste materials of the abovementioned type to be converted to biomass in a virtually continuous process within a shortened period of time, for example one to two days. <IMAGE>
