Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT FIVE ROAD TRAFFIC INTERSECTION DOUBLE ROUNDABOUT
ARRANGEMENT
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of installing it known to me.
©Copyright 19thMayl 998MarkHartwig Five Road Traffic Intersection Double Roundabout Arrangement Monday, March 20, 2000 Page 2 of 7 AC2K02DW Field of the Invention This invention relates to the control of all traffic through a Five-road intersection.
Background of the Invention There have been roundabouts in use since the time of the Romans. They for the most part have been used to control the flow of traffic through a four-road intersection, created by two roads crossing. Occasionally an additional road will terminate at the intersection, thus forming a five-road intersection. In the case of such an arrangement, much confusion is created in the flow and control of traffic around the roundabout, as the intersection and the roads leading to and fro are no longer symmetrical. This leads to a marked increase in accidents and danger to life, both being undesirable. The driver of a vehicle approaching a five-road roundabout must by law give way to all vehicles on his right. This means that the driver must give way to vehicles on his right that are on the roundabout, as well as vehicles from behind, up to 135deg or more. to the right from the direction his vehicle is travelling, as well as travel forward giving due care to any vehicles ahead on his road! To put it simply, the driver of a vehicle approaching the five-road roundabout must drive forward while looking out for vehicles ahead, to the right and behind! (Best of luck)! Object of the Invention The Applicant has monitored the workings of many four-road and several three-road intersections, where a roundabout is in use to control the flow of traffic, as well as several five-road intersections. The object of the invention is to provide A safer alternative to the existing arrangements in use.
An efficient alternative, which will increase the flow of traffic through the intersection.
©Copyrightl 9thMayl 99gMarkHartwig Five Road Traffic Intersection Double Roundabout Arrangement Monday, March 20, 2000 Page 3 of 7 AC2K02DW Summary of the Invention Traffic rules regarding roundabouts, are specifically directed toward the standard four- road intersection. The five-road intersection has anomalies causing motorists to continually break the existing traffic laws while using the single roundabout. The design change allows traffic to use the intersection, knowing that other users can follow standard traffic rules at all times. By simply directing the traffic through the intersection in an orderly and smooth fashion, the applicant has achieved the object of the invention. The users of the intersection are now free to concentrate on one section at a time, instead of the whole. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic can cross at a steady and continuous pace, thus alleviating congestion, the cause of the majority of the accidents.
Note: The applicant only wishes to patent the Five Road Double Roundabout Arrangement, however, as pedestrians, handicapped persons cyclists and all other forms of transport may use the arrangement, the optional speed hump pedestrian crossing has been included. The optional Speed hump pedestrian crossing does not form part of the S Five Road Double Roundabout Arrangement, but is does ensure that ALL users or the Arrangement, do so with the highest degree of safety available.

Aerial photograph of a five-road intersection. The following faults can be seen: The shape of the present roundabout is irregular. Motor vehicular traffic cannot travel around the island at a constant speed.
The angle of approach to the intersection for vehicular traffic varies for each road.
Vehicles entering on the left lane frequently leave via an exit more than two roads from their entrance point. (Illegal)! Vehicles entering on the right lane frequently leave on the second exit road, thus cutting across the traffic remaining illegally in the left-hand lane.
Attachment Number 2. The new Double roundabout arrangement. The plan shows Minor alterations necessary to convert the intersection.
The new Double roundabout arrangement, created by the change in design.
Alterations required on existing roundabout.
N.B. Both new roundabouts in the new Double roundabout arrangement have the same diameter, or as close as possible. Items (1 and 2) Newly created island separating the new Double roundabout arrangement. Item Newly created third lane. Item this lane is situated between the roundabout and the two standard lanes.
