FIG.6
TITLE "MULTI MESSAGE SIGN (MMS) PANEL SEPARATOR" FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a Multi Message Sign (MMS) panel separator. In particular, a portable device for inhibiting the motion of MMS panels within an existing MMS frame.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Multi Message Signs (MMSs) are erected at the side of roads and denote speed, directions, conditions or hazards. Circumstances commonly arise where signs are to be temporarily erected, such as roadwork or public events.
[0003] Existing MMS panels are mounted within a standard MMS frame and placed on the ground on side of the road. The conjuncture of these MMS panels within the MMS frame present a number of disadvantages in use.
[0004] The frames need to be versatile in their accommodation of various size MMS panels, but are therefore ineffective in ensuring MMS panel visibility throughout operation, especially in windy conditions. In particular, MMS panels may move within the MMS frame and obscure one another, potentially reducing traffic information visibility to road users causing a hazard.
[0005] As an alternative to prevent MMS panels covering one another it is known to pack multiple MMS panels behind the desired MMS panel within the MMS frame channel to prevent MMS panel movement. These known methods tend to damage the MMS panels through bending into and out of the MMS frame. Additional MMS panels used for packing are sometimes inserted in the incorrect orientation such that the front face is presented to road users travelling in the opposite direction, providing road users with incorrect traffic information and causing a hazard.
[0006] The present invention attempts to overcome the aforementioned disadvantage of Multi Message Signs.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] In accordance with the present invention there is provided an elongate separator with a T-shaped profile adapted to be installed between two MMS panels situated within a MMS frame.
[0008] In a preferred embodiment, the separator is removably affixed to the MMS frame. More preferably, the separator is removably affixed to the MMS frame via its geometric cross section and interaction with the MMS frame and panels.
[0009] In a preferred embodiment, the separator extends beyond the height of the MMS frame channel.
[0010] In a preferred embodiment, the separator is made from a lightweight material so as not to present a hazard to road users in the event of impact with the separator.
[0011] In a preferred embodiment, the separator is made from a frangible material so as to safely break apart when struck with a significant force, such as a vehicle accident.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0012] The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0013] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a separator for a Multi Message Sign in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention.
[0014] Figure 2 is a front view of the separator of figure 1.
[0015] Figure 3 is a side view of the separator of figure 1.
[0016] Figure 4 is a back view of the separator of figure 1.
[0017] Figure 5 is a top view of the separator of figure 1.
[0018] Figure 6 is a perspective view of a Multi Message Sign with a separator in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention installed in the existing Multi Message Sign.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0019] According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an elongate separator with a T-shaped profile adapted to be installed between two MMS panels situated within a MMS frame.
[0020] The principle advantage of the present invention is that, unlike the packing of multiple MMS panels, a MMS panel separator is significantly more manageable and effective. The separator is also comparatively safer to existing MMS panel packing methods as it negates the hazard of the front face of packing MMS panels being presented to road users and reduces exertion and possible injuries resulting from handling multiple, large MMS panels.
[0021] The separator is significantly lighter and less bulky compared to extra MMS panels, as well as being easier and quicker to install. Due to the comparative size of the separator, the separator is easier to store than existing MMS Panels, and a greater quantity of separators may be carried. This is particularly beneficial for traffic management vehicles due to the space limitations on those vehicles.
[0022] Preferably, the separator extends beyond the height of the MMS frame channel. This improves ease of access to the separator during installation and removal. Furthermore, the additional height of the separator increases safety as the presence of the separator can quickly and easily be confirmed from afar, negating the need for inspection close to high energy vehicle movements.
[0023] Preferably, the means for attaching the separator to the MMS frame provides a secure enough interaction with the MMS frame to remain stable and withstand forces from the MMS panels and environmental conditions (wind, rain, hail, etc.), whilst still allowing the separator to be removed manually.
[0024] The separator is preferably made from a lightweight material, thus allowing for the separator to break apart relatively harmlessly when struck heavily (i.e. by a fast moving vehicle) and reduce the risk of secondary accidents associated with debris. In particular, accidents involving multiple MMS packing panels are significantly more likely to be harmful. Thus, the use of a separator in accordance with the present invention as a replacement for multiple MMS panels is desirable for safety considerations.
[0025] The separator may be made from a frangible material or flexible material so as to safely break apart or bend respectively when struck with a significant force, such as a vehicle accident.
[0026] Referring to figures 1 to 6, there is shown a Multi Message Sign (4) with a Separator (1) in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention.
[0027] The elongate separator (1) has a T-shaped profile and is removably affixed to the MMS frame (4) between at least two MMS panels (2).
[0028] The elongate separator (1) may also replace full width MMS panels (3) within the MMS frame (4), allowing for a combination of general MMS panels to be used.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS 1. An elongate Multi Message Sign (MMS) panel separator with a T-shaped profile adapted to be installed in a MMS frame with a means for securing the separator in the frame; and wherein at least two MMS panels are placed either side of the separator.
  2. 2. A separator of claim 1 wherein, the separator is made from a lightweight material.
  3. 3. A separator of any of the preceding claims wherein, the separator is made from a frangible material.
