Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a baby or child carrier, in particular a baby or child carrier suitable for wearing by an adult wearer such that a baby or small child seated within the carrier is supported by the carrier in an upright position.
Background
[0002] Baby or child carriers of the wearable type are typically worn by parents to carry their child around with them as they walk, travel or otherwise conduct their daily lives, as a wearable carrier allows the baby or child to be kept close to the parent as the child is supported. A conventional wearable baby or child carrier allows the baby or child to be seated in the carrier as it is worn by the parent (or other adult carer) on the front of the torso or on the back. The child faces inwardly toward the parent if the carrier is worn on the back and may face either inwardly or outwardly when the carrier is worn on the front of the torso.
[0003] Whilst many baby carriers are available on the market, aspects of the functionality of the available baby carriers can be improved to better protect the baby or child in varying weather conditions. For example, in warm countries it is important to protect the baby or child against heat and UV radiation from the sun. However, in cooler environments the baby must be warm enough. Furthermore, the comfort level of using the carrier can be improved for both the baby or child and the parent wearer regardless of the weather.
[0004] It is desired to ameliorate one or more shortcomings of conventional baby carriers at least to an extent, or to provide an alternative thereto.
[0005] Any discussion of documents, acts, materials, devices, articles or the like which has been included in the present specification is not to be taken as an admission that any or all of these matters form part of the prior art base or were common general knowledge in the field relevant to the present disclosure as it existed before the priority date of each of the appended claims.
[0006] Throughout this specification the word "comprise", or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated element, integer or step, or group of elements, integers or steps, but not the exclusion of any other element, integer or step, or group of elements, integers or steps.
Summary
[0007] According to a first aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a baby or child carrier, having a carrier body for accommodating a baby or young child therein, the carrier body being configured for wearing on the torso of an adult wearer and to support the baby or child in an upright orientation; the carrier body having a first exterior surface that faces inwards to the wearer of the carrier when in use, and second exterior surface opposite the first exterior surface which faces outwards from the wearer of the carrier when in use, the first exterior surface at least partly supporting the baby or child thereon; the first exterior surface and second exterior surface share an upper edge of the carrier body; wherein the baby or child carrier has a selectively extendable fabric head shade extending beyond the upper edge of the carrier body, wherein a fold line between the head shade and the carrier body comprises a curved seam extending across a lateral extent of the head shade, the curved seam having an upwardly arcuate shape relative to the carrier body.
[0008] The upwardly curved fold seam of the head shade, at the juncture between the carrier body and the head shade, provides a structure to the head shade such that as the head shade is extended into an upright or fully extended configuration, it is self supported and remains extended towards the baby or the wearer rather than collapsing downwardly. The head shade is therefore better able to protect the head of the baby from direct sunlight from the sides as well as from behind the baby's head. At the same time, the fabric head shade is light enough that it does not make the baby's head too warm yet still provides enough coverage to protect against the elements such as wind or sun, and its foldable construction allows it to be easily folded away over the second exterior surface of the carrier body when not required.
[0009] In some embodiments, the fabric head shade may be formed integrally with the first exterior surface or second exterior surface, that is, from the same piece of fabric as the first exterior surface or second exterior surface. In other embodiments, the fabric head shade may be formed separately to the first exterior surface or second exterior surface. However, it is the upwardly arcuate curved seam between the carrier body and the fabric head shade that causes the head shade to be self-supporting in the upright or fully extended configuration.
[0010] In some embodiments, the fabric head shade may comprise of an upper layer of fabric and a lower layer of fabric. The upper layer of fabric may be a mesh fabric for breathability whilst the lower layer of fabric may be a non-mesh fabric for the comfort of the baby - a mesh material adjacent to the baby's head may be slightly scratchy, depending on the material used. The lower fabric layer may therefore be made of a smooth material which may be perforated or solid and for example may be comprised of 100% natural materials such as brushed cotton or natural material blend, or a 100% synthetic material such as polyester or a blend of natural and synthetic fibres.
[0011] The fabric head shade may comprise a flap having a proximal flap portion proximate the upper edge of the carrier body, and a distal flap portion adjacent the proximal flap portion, wherein the proximal flap portion and the distal portion are extendable away from the second exterior surface to provide an upright configuration of the head shade. In an embodiment, the head shade may further comprise an extension panel between the proximal flap portion and upper edge of the carrier body, the extension panel selectively operable between an exposed configuration to provide a fully extended configuration of the head shade and a hidden configuration that provides an upright configuration of the head shade. The extension panel may have a generally crescent shape in one embodiment, , or a generally rectangular shape in another embodiment. When the head shade is in the fully retracted or upright position, the extension panel may be selectively and securely hidden between the head shade and the upper edge of the carrier body via fasteners such as buttons, zippers or Velcro" running along a lateral portion of the upper edge of the carrier body and a corresponding portion of the head shade. The fabric head shade may also be foldable at the fold-line so as to be placed over the second exterior surface to provide a fully retracted configuration of the head shade. The head shade is easily adjustable between the fully retracted, upright and fully extended configurations, or indeed into or out of the folded and hidden configuration if the head shade is newly required or no longer required. Embodiments of the head shade may also have at least one fastener portion for fastening the head shade to the shoulder straps or carrier body when used in the fully extended configuration, ensuring the head shade in the fully extended configuration remains extended rather than collapsing downwardly.
[0012] According to a second aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a baby or child carrier having a carrier body for accommodating a baby or young child therein, the carrier body being configured for wearing on the torso of an adult wearer and to support the baby or child in an upright orientation; the carrier body having a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface opposite the first exterior surface, the first exterior surface at least partly supporting the baby or child thereon; wherein the first exterior surface and second exterior surface comprises first and second apertures there through, each of the first and second apertures being configured for receiving a hand of the wearer there through, and wherein each of thefirst and second apertures extends through to the second exterior surface and first exterior surface of the carrier body. The apertures accordingly provide access from the second exterior side surface of the carrier body to the first exterior surface of the carrier body, to allow the wearer of the carrier to place their hands through the apertures to cradle the baby directly as it sits in the carrier whilst the carrier is being worn by the adult wearer. This construction provides an increased level of comfort to the parent, as adult wearer of the carrier, as well as to the child as it allows the parent to bond directly with the child via direct skin to skin contact between the hands and the child, whilst it is supported in the baby or child carrier. The apertures also provide a means of keeping the hands of the parent warm.
[0013] The first and second apertures maybe arranged at or near lateral extremities of a lower portion of the carrier body so as to be at a height and lateral position on the carrier that the wearer's hands may comfortably pass through the apertures to the interior of the carrier body when the carrier is being worn by the wearer. This is both ergonomically comfortable for the adult wearer of the carrier, and comforting for the baby and for the parent.
[0014] Each of the apertures may include a fastening means for selectively fastening the aperture. The fastening means may comprise one or more of a zip, at least one press stud, hook and eye type fastener, or at least one button and button hole.
[0015] In some embodiments, the carrier body further includes an outer fabric panel configured to extend over at least a portion of the first exterior surface and to at least partially cover the first and second apertures.
[0016] According to a third aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a baby or child carrier having a carrier body for accommodating a baby or young child therein, the carrier body being configured for wearing on the torso of an adult wearer and to support the baby or child in an upright orientation; the carrier body having a first exterior facing surface and a second exterior facing surface opposite the first exterior surface, the first exterior facing surface at least partly supporting the baby or child thereon; a fabric panel configured for optional attachment over at least a portion of the second exterior surface; and an insert layer configured for placement between the second exterior surface and the fabric panel.
[0017] The carrier body therefore provides the option of up to three layers of material at the second exterior surface of the carrier body, which is the surface that is most exposed to the elements when worn by the parent or other adult carer. The child sits in the baby carrier adjacent the first exterior surface, for example with its back to the first exterior surface and facing the parent or carer, with the carrier body between the child and the exposed second exterior surface. The comfort of the child when seated in the baby carrier can be adjusted for temperature and weather variations by selecting the most appropriate combination of the three layers for the temperature or weather being experienced. For example, in warm weather, the carrier body and the second exterior surface may provide sufficient warmth to the child. In this case, the fabric panel does not need to be attached over the second exterior surface to provide an extra layer of warmth. However, in cooler weather the fabric panel can be extended over the second exterior surface and attached in place over the second exterior surface to provide additional protection against cool temperatures and wind. In cold or particularly windy weather, the insert layer can be additionally placed between the fabric panel and the second exterior surface of the carrier body to provide extra warmth and protection of the child against the elements.
[0018] In some embodiments, the fabric panel maybe adapted for extending over the second exterior surface in an extended configuration thereof or for retracting into a pocket at one end of the second exterior surface of the baby carrier in a retracted configuration thereof.
[0019] The fabric panel may have an attachment portion that is attached to the carrier body inside the pocket. The fabric panel is therefore attached to the interior of the pocket for ease of storing the fabric panel within the pocket when it is not required, and ease of access to retrieve the fabric panel when it is desired to extend it over the second exterior surface.
[0020] The fabric panel may have at least one fastener portion for fastening the fabric panel to the carrier body to retain it in the extended configuration over the second exterior surface.
[0021] The fabric panel may comprise of waterproof, water repellant or water resistant material. The fabric panel therefore provides at least some level of protection over the second exterior surface and/or the insert layer against inclement wet weather, in addition to providing an extra layer against cool temperatures and wind.
[0022] The insert layer may be separate to and removable from the baby or child carrier. The insert layer may comprise of fleece material, or alternatively it may comprise of some other insulating or warmth generating material. The insert layer is provided to add a warm layer to the carrier body behind the child as it is seated in the baby carrier, so as to keep it warm during cold weather. However, the insert layer is removable so that the parent or other carer has the option to remove it during warmer weather. The fleece or similarly insulating material of the insert layer ensures the child is well protected against particularly windy conditions and cool or cold temperatures at the exposed second exterior side of the carrier body.
[0023] In some embodiments, the insert layer has at least one fastener portion for fastening the insert layer between the fabric panel and the second exterior surface.
[0024] In some embodiments, the insert layer comprises first and second insert layer apertures there through, each of the first and second insert layer apertures being configured for receiving a hand of the wearer there through, and wherein each of the first and second insert layer apertures is in communication with the other of the first and second insert layer apertures. That is, each of the first and second insert layer apertures extends through to the other of the insert layer apertures. The first and second insert layer apertures accordingly provide warmth to the hands of the wearer, and comfort during cold weather and further allow the hands to be surrounded in the material of the insert layer and to touch. They also allow the wearer to cradle the baby indirectly, with the hands being surrounded by the soft material of the insert layer on all sides. The first and second insert layer apertures may be arranged at the same lateral positions as, or near to the positions of, the apertures located on the carrier body, so as to be at an ergonomically comfortable position for the adult wearer, much in the same way that the apertures located on the carrier body provide to the wearer and baby.
[0025] The option to equip the carrier body with one, two or three layers of fabric provides versatility and flexibility of use to the baby carrier to allow a child seated in the carrier to be comfortable in cool or warm temperatures and to be protected against wind and/or rain if required.

Description of Embodiments
[0058] Embodiments of the present disclosure aim to alleviate the limited functionality of baby or child carriers and to improve the comfort of the child and an adult wearer of the baby carrier in use.
[0059] Specific embodiments of the baby or child carrier relate to improvements in the protection of the baby or child against various aspects of the weather for example protection against the sun. Other embodiments protect the baby or child against cool or cold weather, wind and/or rain. Yet further embodiments provide a means of direct contact between the adult wearer and the child, through the carrier as the child is seated in the carrier and whilst the carrier is being worn by the adult wearer. The various embodiments of the baby or child carrier may be implemented separately or together to provide a versatile baby or child carrier that can be easily adapted to suit changing weather conditions as well as provide direct contact between the adult wearer and the child.
[0060] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a baby or child carrier 10 in accordance with embodiments of the disclosure. The baby or child carrier, herein after referred to as a baby carrier, may carry a baby or small child from the age of birth (approximately 3.0kg) to 24 months old (or approximately 15Kg in weight) in one embodiment, to 36 months old (or approximately 20Kg in weight) in another embodiment.
[0061] The baby carrier 10 comprises of a carrier body 20, a waistband 60, and a pair of shoulder straps 40. The baby carrier 10 is designed to be worn on the torso of an adult wearer with the carrier body 20 to the front of the torso and the shoulder straps 40 placed over the shoulders of the wearer. The waist band 60 sits at the waist of the wearer for securing the carrier body 20 onto the front of the torso of the wearer.
[0062] As schematically represented in Figure 2, the baby sits in the baby carrier 10 in an upright position or orientation, with its back to the carrier body 20 such that it faces the wearer of the carrier 10. The carrier body 20 covers the child's back and part of its head, with the child's legs placed either side of the carrier body 20, adjacent the wearer of the carrier 10 when in use.
[0063] The carrier body 20 comprises a generally inverse trapezoidally shaped body that extends from an upper edge of the waist band 60 at a lower end of the baby carrier to a lower end of the shoulder straps 40 and continues to an upper end of the baby carrier 10 to an upper end of the shoulder straps 40. The carrier body 20 is sized to substantially cover the child when in the seated position in the baby carrier 10. The carrier body 20 comprises a central fabric panel 15, which may be made of a double or single layer of breathable mesh material such as polyester mesh and extends to the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. The central panel 15 is surrounded by a reinforcing fabric structure 18 that provides strength to the carrier body 20 and which also provides attachment portions for the shoulder straps 40. The carrier body 20 comprises the central fabric panel 15 and surrounding reinforcing fabric structure 18 as best demonstrated in Figure 1(b). At an upper end of the reinforcing fabric structure 18 are a pair of laterally spaced, upwardly extending wings 21 that include fastening tabs 22 spaced along an upper edge of the carrier body 20 for fastening the carrier body 20 to a front portion of each of the shoulder straps 40. The shoulder straps 40 are attached to the fastening tabs 22 of the upwardly extending wings 21 via at least one buckle 24, seen in Figure 1(b). Alternatively, the shoulder straps 40 may be permanently fixed to the upwardly extending wings 21 via a fabric strap or panel if the fastening tabs 22 and buckle(s) 24 are omitted. The carrier body 20 is attached to the waist band 60 by stitching a lower edge of the carrier body 20 to a portion of an upper edge 61 of the waist band 60 that is immediately adjacent the carrier body 20.
[0064] The reinforcing fabric structure 18 of the carrier body 20 also includes a pair of lateral wing portions 23 approximately half way along a vertical length of the carrier body 20, upon which are mounting tabs 25 adapted for receiving and fastening the carrier body 20 to a lower portion of a respective one of the shoulder straps 40. The mounting tabs 25 each include a strap portion that attaches to a buckle 27, seen in Figure 1(a), for adjustably attaching the carrier body 20 to a lower portion of the respective shoulder strap 40. The shoulder strap 40 may be permanently fixed to the lateral wing portions 23 if the buckle 27 is omitted. Accordingly, in either embodiment, the shoulder straps 40 are attached at both upper and lower ends thereof to the carrier body 20. The shoulder straps 40 may be made of a perforated neoprene material providing strength and ventilation and may include additional padding on an exterior surface thereof that faces the wearer in use. In some embodiments, a two-part magnetic fastener or other appropriate fastener may be used in place of the button and button hole fastening.
[0065] The central fabric panel 15 extends substantially over the carrier body 20 between the upwardly extending wings 21 and the lateral wings 23 of the reinforcing fabric structure 18. The reinforcing fabric structure 18 is sewn onto a periphery of the central fabric panel 15 and to the upper edge of the waist band 60. The double or single layer of breathable mesh material of the central fabric panel 15 is robust yet provides for ventilation of heat away from the carrier body 20. Suitable materials include a polyester mesh material as it is light and highly breathable. The fabric panel 15 of the carrier body 20 defines a first exterior surface 87 (seen in Figures 14 to 17) that faces inwardly towards the wearer and the baby or child when in use, and a second exterior surface 88 that faces outwardly from the wearer in use of the baby carrier 10
.
[0066] The waistband 60 comprises a circular band of four way stretch material configured to extend around the waist of the wearer and to secure the lower part of the baby carrier 10 onto the wearer. The waistband 60 includes an adjustable strap 62 for adjusting the waistband on the wearer and a fabric panel 63 which is padded at the rear of the waistband 60 to provide lumbar support to the wearer of carrier 10. Some portions of the waistband 60 may include additional padding on an exterior surface thereof that faces the wearer in use. The waistband 60 may be made of a perforated neoprene material or a 3D perforated foam covered with mesh to allow ventilation for the wearer of the carrier..
[0067] An upper portion of the second exterior surface 88 of the central fabric panel of the carrier body 20 may have an upper fabric panel 26 sewn onto it (as shown in Figure 4) , the upper fabric panel 26 extending substantially or partially over the lateral extent of the carrier body 20 and having a generally semi-oval shape with a parabolically curved lower edge. The upper fabric panel 26 may alternatively be sewn into the upper portion of the first exterior surface 87 of the central fabric panel 15 which faces the wearer in use (as shown in Figures 15, 16 and 18) . The upper fabric panel 26 may be made of a double or single layer of breathable mesh material. In either embodiment, the upper lateral edge of both the central fabric panel 15 and upper fabric panel 26 is shared, forming a single upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. Upper edge 28 is gently curved in an upwardly arcuate shape across its lateral extent. The upper fabric panel 26 may include a laterally elongate aperture forming an opening to a pocket formed between the upper fabric panel 26 and the fabric of the carrier body 20. The aperture may include a fastening means, for example a zipper fastening 32 for selectively opening and closing the aperture (as shown in Figure 4). Alternatively, the upper fabric panel 26 may include a laterally elongate seam 86 for a zipper fastening for the attachment of accessories (as shown in Figures 15, 16 and 18).
[0068] As seen in Figure 1, the carrier body 20 also includes an outer fabric panel 30 configured to extend over at least a portion of the first exterior surface of the central fabric panel 15, for example over substantially the entire second exterior surface of the carrier body 20 . The outer fabric panel 30 has a parabolic curved upper edge 35 shaped to complement the parabolic curve shape of the a head shade 50 of the baby or child carrier when the head shade 50 is in a fully retracted position as will be described next.
[0069] The baby carrier 10 includes a head shade 50, 150, 250 shown in a folded back or fully retracted configuration in Figures 1, 2 and 3. The head shade may take various forms as described below with reference to Figures 3 to 13. Figures 3 to 5 show a first embodiment of the head shade 50. Figures 6 to 9 show a second embodiment of the head shade 150. Figures 10 to 13 show a third embodiment of the head shade 250.
[0070] A first embodiment of a head shade 50 is shown in Figures 3 to 5. Figure 3 shows the head shade 50 in a folded-back or fully retracted configuration. Figure 4 shows the head shade 50 in an upright configuration, whilst Figure 5 shows the head shade in the upright configuration over the head of a baby. The head shade 50 in this embodiment comprises a fabric flap that extends upwardly and inwardly towards the wearer of the baby carrier 10 from the upper edge 28 of the fabric carrier body 20. A leading edge of the flap 50 has a generally parabolic curve shape shape to complement the parabolic curved upper edge 35 of the outer fabric panel 30. The head shade 50 is attached to the upper edge 28 of the fabric carrier body 20 via a stitched seam such that a fold line 58 of the head shade 50 along the seam takes the same upwardly curved shape as the upper edge 28. As such, the curved fold line 58 of the head shade 50 has an upwardly extending generally arcuate shape relative to the head shade 50, relative to the carrier body 20. The head shade 50 comprises of a proximal flap portion 29 and a distal flap portion 31. The proximal flap portion 29 is adjacent the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 and occupies approximately one third of the head-shade. It has an upper part made of a double or single layer of a breathable mesh material and a lower fabric layer that is preferably made of non-mesh material, for example a PVC leatherette material or stretchy material. The mesh material is light so as not to overheat the head of the baby during use, however the non-mesh material provides a softer smooth material adjacent the head of the baby to avoid discomfort. The distal flap portion 31 may also be made of one or two layers of the non-mesh material, together with a lower non-mesh material layer, to provide structure to the peak of the flap. Whilst Figure 5 shows the proximal flap 29 and the distal flap 31 as separate but attached components, they may also form a single integrated flap. The head shade 50 may be stored in the fully retracted or folded-back configuration over the second exterior surface 88 of the carrier body 20 as shown in Figure 3 (also as shown in Figures 1 and 2), by folding the head shade 50 at its curved fold-line 58. However, during warm, sunny conditions in which it is desired to provide a protective covering over the head of the baby, the head shade 50 can be unfolded from the second exterior surface 88 of the carrier body 20 at the fold-line 58 and extended over the head of the baby as shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. The upwardly arcuate curved seam or fold line 58 of the head shade 50 ensures that the head shade 50 extends upwardly and towards the wearer without collapsing, producing a self-supporting covering that provides shade over the head of a baby seated in the baby carrier 20 without overheating the baby, as the baby's head is not completely covered and adequate ventilation can reach the baby. The head shade 50 also provides a degree of privacy to the baby.
[0071] The mesh material and the non-mesh material maybe coated with up to a UPF50+ rating protective coating to provide up to UPF50+ sun protection to the baby, whilst also preventing material fading from sun exposure.
[0072] A variation of the head shade 50 is shown schematically in Figures 6 to 9. The head shade 150 is largely the same as the head shade 50, with the same reference numbers being used for identical parts. The head shade 150 comprises a proximal flap portion 129 that extends upwardly and inwardly towards the wearer of the baby carrier 10. The head shade 150 also comprises a distal flap portion 131 having a parabolically curved leading edge. The proximal flap portion 129 has an upper part made of a double or single layer of a breathable mesh material and a lower fabric layer made of non-mesh material, for example a PVC leatherette or stretchy material. The mesh material is light so as not to overheat the head of the baby during use, however the non mesh material provides a softer smooth material adjacent the head of the baby to avoid discomfort. The distal flap portion 131 is made of one or two layers of the non-mesh material, together with the non-mesh material layer, to help provide structure to the peak of the flap. The main difference from the head shade 50 is that an extra extension panel 133 is included between the proximal flap portion 129 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. The extension panel 133 is sewn into the head shade 150 between the upper edge 28 of the fabric carrier body 20 and the proximal flap portion 129 (as best shown in Figure 8 and Figure 9). The proximal flap portion 129 remains attached to the upper edge 28 of the body carrier 20 at the lateral extremities thereof as best seen in Figures 8 and 9, and its fold-line 158 retains the same upwardly arcuate curved seam as upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 that provides the self-supporting structure to the head shade 50.
[0073] The extension panel 133 is a soft fabric insert panel made of a double or single layer of breathable mesh fabric. The extension panel 133 has a crescent shape (as best shown in Figure 8 and Figure 9), and can be hidden from external view in a retracted or folded configuration of the head shade 150 by pushing it behind the proximal flap 129 such that it is not visible, as shown in Figure 6 (a) and Figure 6(b). When it is desired to use the head shade 150 to provide shade or privacy over the head of the baby, pulling the proximal flap portion 129 away from the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 towards the wearer results in an upright configuration of the head shade 150 in which the proximal panel 129 lies adjacent the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20, much the same as it does in the head shade 50. The upright configuration of the head shade 150 is shown in Figure 7 (a) and Figure 7(b). Fastening means (not shown) may be included on a lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 129 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20, for example a zip fastener extending the length of the upper edge 28, buttons or Velcro T M, to selectively secure the proximal flap portion 129 to the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 when the head shade 150 is not in the fully extended position. The fastening means may be positioned on an interior surface or edge of the proximal flap portion 129 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. When the fasteners are secured, and the head shade 150 is in the upright or fully retracted position, the extension panel 133 will fold outwardly and externally of the second exterior surface 88 of the carrier body 20. Alternatively, the fastening means may be positioned on an exterior surface or edge of the proximal flap portion 129 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. In this embodiment, when the fasteners are secured, the extension panel 133 will be positioned on the first exterior surface 87 of the carrier body 20 when the proximal flap portion 129 of the head shade 150 is in the upright or fully retracted position and will fold inwardly and internally to the first exterior surface 87 of the carrier body 20.
[0074] By pulling the proximal flap portion 129 of the head shade 150 over the head of the baby, the extension panel 133 opens out to extend the head shade 150 further over the head of the baby in a fully extended position, providing fuller coverage against sunlight and further privacy for the baby. The extension panel 133 is therefore selectively operable between an exposed configuration to provide a fully extended configuration of the head shade 150 and a hidden configuration that provides an upright configuration of the head shade 150.
[0075] As with the head shade 50, the curved seam or fold line 158 of the head shade proximal flap portion 129 provides structure to the head shade 50 such that it extends forward rather than collapsing in on itself. In Figures 6 to 9, the distal flap portion 131 of the head shade 150 is shown integrally formed with the proximal flap portion 129. In some embodiments, this arrangement may also apply to the head shade in place of the distinct panels 29, 31 as discussed above. Whilst Figures 6 to 9 show the extension panel 133 of the head shade 150 as a separate but attached component, it may also form a single integrated panel made from the same single piece of material as proximal flap portion 129. The extension panel 133 may also form a single integrated panel with central fabric panel 15, even though it is shown as a separate but attached component in Figures 7 to 9.
[0076] A further variation of the head shade 50 is shown schematically in Figures 10 to 13. The head shade 250 is largely the same as the head shade 50, with the same reference numbers being used for identical parts. The head shade 250 comprises a proximal flap portion 229 that extends upwardly and inwardly towards the wearer of the baby carrier 10. The head shade 250 also comprises a distal flap portion 231 having a parabolically curved leading edge. The proximal flap portion 229 has an upper part made of a double or single layer of a breathable mesh material and a lower fabric layer made of non-mesh material, for example a PVC leatherette or stretchy material. The mesh material is light so as not to overheat the head of the baby during use, however the non-mesh material provides a softer smooth material adjacent the head of the baby to avoid discomfort. The distal flap portion 231 is made of one or two layers of the non-mesh material, together with the non-mesh material layer, to provide structure to the peak of the flap. The main difference from the head shade 50 is that an extra extension panel 233 is included between the proximal flap portion 229 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. The extension panel 233 has a generally rectangular or curved rectangular shape with two opposing longer sides, an upper of which is sewn along a lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and a lower of which is sewn into the lateral upper edge 28 of carrier body 20. This effectively attaches the extension panel 233 to both the head shade 250 and carrier body 20. The extension panel 233 allows the head shade 250 to be placed into an upright configuration or a fully extended configuration as with the head shade 150.
[0077] Fastening means may be included on the lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and the lateral upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20, for example, a zip fastener extending the length of the upper edge 28 or buttons or VelcroTM, to selectively secure the proximal flap portion 229 to the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 when the head shade 250 is in the upright configuration. The fastening means provide additional support when the head shade 250 is in the upright configuration, enabling the fold-line 258 to retain the same upwardly arcuate shaped curved shape that provides the self-supporting structure to the head shade 50. The extension panel 233 may also be forced inwards towards the wearer and downwards onto the first exterior surface 87 of the baby carrier body 20 as an alternative to the fastening means in the upright configuration when the extended position is no longer required. Doing so retains the upwardly curved arc shaped seam across fold line 258, albeit to a lesser degree than when using the fastening means, and provides the self-supporting structure to the head shade. However, utilising the fasteners will help to retain the curve shaped nature of the head shade in the event of movement by the baby or wearer that may dislodge the extension panel 233 and cause it to fall outwards away from the wearer, losing the curved seam and structural integrity which enables it to stand upright without any further support.
[0078] The fastening means may be positioned on the interior surface or edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. When the fastening means are secured, the extension panel 233 will fold outwardly and externally onto the second exterior surface 88 of carrier body 20. The fastening means may alternatively be positioned on the exterior surface or edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 and when the fasteners are secured, the extension panel 233 will be positioned adjacent the first exterior surface 87 of carrier body 20 when the proximal flap portion 129 of the head shade 150 is in the upright position. As discussed, the fastening means provide additional support to the curved fold-line 258 by connecting and securing the lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 when the head shade 250 is not fully extended, thus enabling the structural integrity of the curved seam to be retained so as to provide the same self-supporting structure of the head shade 50.
[0079] The extension panel 233 is a soft fabric panel made of a double or single layer of breathable mesh fabric having a generally rectangular or curved rectangular shape. The two opposing longer sides of the extension panel 233 are generally straight, however may be curved with a gentle arc shape, whilst the two shorter sides are generally straight. The extension panel 233 can be hidden from external view in a retracted or folded configuration of the head shade 250 shown in Figure 10 by securing the fasteners between the head shade 250 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20. As discussed, the extension panel 233 may also be hidden by pushing it inwards and downwards to sit adjacent the first exterior surface 87 of the carrier body 20. Similarly, the proximal flap portion 229 can be retracted or folded such that it is not visible in the upright configuration of the head shade 250, as shown in Figure 11(a) and Figure 11(b). When it is desired to use the extension panel 233 of head shade 250 to provide more shade over the head of the baby, the wearer may pull the proximal flap portion 229 upwards from the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 towards the wearer, resulting in head shade 250 extending into the fully extended position towards the wearer and over the child's head as shown in Figure 12 a, Figure 12 b and Figure 13. If the fastening means positioned at the edge of the proximal flap portion 229 and the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 are secured, these can be released and, much in the same way as when the fastening means are not being used, the wearer may pull the proximal flap portion 229 upwards from the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20 towards the wearer, resulting in head shade 250 extending upwardly and towards the wearer and over the child's head in the fully extended position.
[0080] In concealing the extension panel 233 in the upright configuration of the head shade 250, the proximal flap portion 229 lies adjacent to the upper edge 28 of the carrier body 20, much the same as it does in the head shade 50 and the head shade 150, the extension panel 233 is selectively operable between an exposed configuration to provide a fully extended configuration of the head shade 250 and a hidden configuration that provides the upright configuration of the head shade 250. As with the head shade 50, the curved seam or fold line 258 of the head shade proximal flap portion 229 provides some structure to the head shade 250 in the upright configuration.
By pulling the proximal flap portion 229 of the head shade 250 over the head of the baby, the extension panel 233 opens out to extend the head shade 250 further over the head of the baby and into a fully extended configuration, providing fuller coverage against sunlight and the elements or simply providing additional privacy to the child. The shape of the extension panel 233 retains the same lateral curvature of the extension panel 133 but the increased length of the lineal sides of the extension panel 233 allows it to be extended further over the head of the baby. This variation of the head shade 250 may tend to fall forward slightly towards the wearer, or fall outward away from the wearer, when in the extended configuration due to the rectangular shape of the extension panel 233. Further fastening means such as buckles, buttons 41 or straps made of elastic or fabric may be provided on the head shade 250 which connect the head shade 250 to another set of fastening means, for example buttons 41, positioned on the shoulder straps 40, upwardly extending wings 21, reinforcing fabric structure 18, or carrier body 20. The fasteners or connecting straps on head shade 250 may be positioned on interior or exterior facing surfaces of the proximal flap portion 229, distal flap portion 231 or extension panel 233, or may also be positioned along the lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 229. Utilising the further fastening means provides the user with a more secure way of retaining the head shade 250 in the fully extended configuration, especially when the baby carrier 10 is not being used in the stationary position and the baby and/or wearer are moving. Nevertheless, the head shade 250 can readily provide additional shade and/or privacy to the child and has the additional benefit of accommodating larger children. In Figures 10 to 13, the distal flap portion 231 of the head shade 250 is shown integrally formed with the proximal flap portion 229. The proximal flap portion 229 and the distal flap portion 231 may alternatively comprise of separate panels as in the illustrated embodiment of the head shade 50 and its panels 29, 31. Whilst Figures 10 to 13 shows the extension panel 233 of the head shade 250 as separate but attached components, they may also form a single integrated panel made from the same single piece of material as fabric flap 250 or proximal flap portion 229. The extension panel 233 may also form a single integrated panel with central fabric panel 15, despite being shown as separate but attached components in Figures 10 to 13.
[0081] Whilst the embodiments of the head shade 50, 150 and 250 described above show that the fabric for head shades 50 and 150, and the fabric of extension panel 233 for head shade 250, are all sewn onto the upper edge 28 of carrier body 20, they may also all be formed integrally with the carrier body 20 as part of the same piece of fabric as the carrier body 20 including the head shade 50, 150, 250 and if applicable, the extension panel 233. In this case, it is important to retain the curved seam or fold-line
58, 158, 258 of the head shade 50, 150, 250 between the upper edge 28 of carrier body and the lower lateral edge of the proximal flap portion 29, 129, 229 of the head shade 50, 150, 250 to enable the head shade 50, 150, 250 to remain self-supporting when in use.
[0082] Figures 14 to 18 are views of a second embodiment of the baby carrier 200 in which the carrier body 20 includes a pair of elongate apertures 238. The wearer of the carrier may place his or her hands in the apertures 238 (one hand in each of the apertures) to access the interior of the carrier body 20 whilst the baby carrier 10 is being worn. The apertures 238 are positioned at the lateral extremities of a lower portion of the carrier body 20 and are formed at an angle to the vertical of between about 10 and 20 degrees, for example at an angle of 15 degrees, in line with the sides of the inverse-trapezoidally shaped carrier body 20. The apertures 238 are therefore ergonomically arranged for the wearer to easily place their hands through the apertures.
[0083] The apertures 238 are formed by cutting through the fabric of the carrier body and strengthening the fabric surrounding the aperture 238 with a reinforcing border (not shown), sewn onto the front and/or rear of the carrier body 20. The apertures 238 may each include a fastener (not shown) for closing the aperture. In one embodiment, the fastener is a button fastening, or a press stud fastening or two-part magnetic fastening. In alternative embodiments, the fastener is a zip fastener extending the length of the aperture 238 or it may be a two-part hook and eye type fastening system such as Velcro".
[0084] The apertures 238 allow the wearer of the baby carrier 200 to place their hands through the apertures 238 and to clasp their hands together at the second exterior side 88 of the baby carrier 200. Accordingly, when a baby or small child is seated in an upright position in the baby carrier 200, the wearer is able to cradle the baby or small child directly. This functionality not only keeps the hands of the wearer warm at the interior side of the carrier body 20, but also provides comfort for both the baby and the parent as wearer of the baby carrier 200.
[0085] Figures 19 to 22 are views of a baby carrier 300 having a triple layering system providing optional coverage and protection of the carrier body 20 against cold, windy or otherwise inclement weather. The triple layer system incorporates the outer fabric panel 30, the carrier body 20 and an optional insert layer 42.
[0086] The outer fabric panel 30 may be optionally extended over the carrier body 20 to provide a protective layer over the carrier body 20 against windy conditions and/or cool temperatures. The outer fabric panel 30 has substantially the same size and general shape as the carrier body 20, including a straight lower edge 38 that extends to the waistband 60. The waistband 60 includes a pocket 64 having a laterally oriented opening in a portion of the waistband 60 that is directly beneath the carrier body 20. The lower edge 38 of the outer fabric panel 30 is sewn into the pocket or may be sewn into the upper lateral edge of waist band 60. The outer fabric panel 30 can be rolled up and stowed inside the pocket 64 when it is not required, for example in warm weather when it is desired to keep the baby cool (as best shown in Figure 21). The pocket may be provided with a zip closure 66 or other closing means. It can be easily retrieved from the pocket 64 when needed, for example in cooler weather or windy or otherwise inclement weather. As mentioned earlier, the outer fabric panel 30 is configured to extend over substantially the entire first exterior surface of the carrier body 20 with the exception of the parabolic curved upper edge 35 which is shaped to complement the parabolic curve shape of the distal flap portion 31, 131, 231 of the head shade 50, 150, 250 when head shade 50, 150, 250 is in the fully retracted position, such that the fabric panel 30 can fit around it.
[0087] An upper portion of the outer fabric panel 30 has a pair of upper lateral fastening means 37 that are arranged to fit either side of the distal flap portion 31, 131, 231 of the head shade 50, 150, 250 to be fastenable to fastening means 39 positioned on the upwardly extending wings 21 when the outer fabric panel 30 is extended over the carrier body 20 as shown in Figure 19.The fastening means 37 may include a fastener such as a button or button hole, with the fastening means 39 positioned on the upwardly extending wings 21 or carrier body 20 carrying the other of the button or button hole, for fastening the outer fabric layer 30 to the carrier body 20. Alternative fastening arrangements, for example a magnet fastening system, may be used in place of the button and button hole.
[0088] The outer fabric panel 30 may be made of a windproof material, for example a lightweight synthetic material or a knitted, four way stretch material.
[0089] The insert layer 42 is a separate and removable layer having a size and shape that is substantially the same as that of the outer front panel 30 as shown in Figures 19 to 22. It may be made of one or more of a fleece material, sheepskin, wool, or alternatively for extremely hot environments where both wind protection and ventilation are required, a heat wicking material. An upper portion of the insert layer 42 has a pair of upper lateral fastening means 44 (shown in Figure 20) that are arranged to fit either side of the upper end of the head shade 50 to fastening means 46 positioned on the upwardly extending wings 21 when the insert layer 42 is extended over the carrier body 20.The fastening means 44 may include a fastener such as a button or button hole, with the fastening means 46 positioned on the upwardly extending wings 21 or carrier body 20 carrying the other of the button or button hole, for fastening the insert layer 42 to the carrier body 20. Alternative fastening arrangements, for example a magnet fastening system, may be used in place of the button and button hole. A lower edge of the insert layer 42 includes two lower fasteners 48 (shown in Figure 21) for attaching a lower portion of the insert layer 42 to the waist band seam 51 between carrier body 20 and waist band 60 on two lower fasteners 49. The fasteners 48, 49 may be magnetic fasteners or they may be buttons/button holes or other appropriate fastener.
[0090] The insert layer 42 can be attached to the carrier body 20 via the fasteners 44, 46, 48, 49 when it is required, for example in cold weather when it is desired to keep the baby warm whilst it is seated in the baby carrier 10. If the insert layer 42 is not required, for example in warmer weather, it can be unattached from the carrier body 20 and may be stored in a separate pouch (not shown).
[0091] As best illustrated in Figure 22, in some embodiments, the insert layer 42 comprises a pair of insert layer apertures 421 there through, each of the first and second apertures being configured for receiving a hand of the wearer there through. The first and second insert layer apertures are arranged so as to be in communication with each another. That is, each of the first and second insert layer apertures extends through to the other of the insert layer apertures at the opposite side of the insert layer 42. The insert layer apertures 421 may be formed by creating a lateral seam 422 approximate half way down the lineal extent of the insert layer 42, and stitching in two additional layers 423 of the insert layer 42 material along the lateral seam 422. The two additional layers 423 are sewn together along a lowest lateral seam 424 of insert layer 42. Accordingly, the two additional layers 423 are sewn along the opposing longer lateral edges yet left open along the opposing lineal edges, creating an opening extending the full lateral extent of the insert layer 42 from one side to another. Alternatively, the pair of insert layer apertures 421 may be formed by sewing a single additional panel of material onto the front or back of insert layer 42 along the same lateral seam 422 and lowest lateral seam 424.
[0092] Each of the two additional layers 423 may be double layered so as to, effectively position the warm and comforting material on all exterior surfaces of the insert layer 42 that may be touched, providing additional comfort and warmth for both the wearer and baby. This is important particularly if the insert layer 42 material comprises the comforting finish on only one side of the material, which is often the case. The insert layer apertures 421 accordingly allow the wearer to place one hand in each of the insert layer apertures 421 to provide warmth to the hands of the wearer, and comfort during cold weather. They also allow the wearer to cradle the baby indirectly, with the hands being surrounded by the soft material of the insert layer 42 on all sides. The first and second insert layer apertures 421 may be arranged at the same lateral positions as, or near to the positions of, the apertures 238 located on the carrier body , so as to be at an ergonomically comfortable position for the adult wearer, much in the same way that the apertures 238 located on the carrier body provide to the wearer and baby, and allow the wearer to easily transfer their hands between direct skin to skin contact with their baby, and the apertures 421 on the insert layer 42.
[0093] When not in use, the insert layer 42 may remain attached to baby carrier 300 by being rolled and stowed in the waist band pocket 64 together with, or separate to, the outer fabric panel 30. Alternatively, the insert layer 42 can be rolled and retained in a rolled configuration via fasteners such as buttons and elastics sewn into the waist band seam 51 which connect over the rolled insert layer 42 to secure it in place. In this manner, layer 42 sits rolled up over the top of waist band upper edge 61 and the base of the central fabric panel 15. Accordingly, the insert layer 42 does not need to be completely removed from the baby carrier 300 when it is no longer required, and provides a convenient, easily and accessible stowage for when it is and is not required rather than falling down the front of the wearer's legs which may get in the way during the wearer's movement and requires the wearer to bend down to retrieve for use.
[0094] It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the above-described embodiments, without departing from the broad general scope of the present disclosure. In particular, one or more features of one embodiment or variation disclosed herein may be combined with one or more features of another embodiment or variation described herein. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
