IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATED TO CONTAINERS HAVING TAMPER-EVIDENT CAPS
Technical Field
The present invention relates to containers having or adapted to receive and operate tamper evident caps.
Background
It is common for containers, particularly those with contents for human consumption, to have a cap which indicates whether the container has been opened. One method of indicating this is to include a number of frangible bridges linking a cap body and a band. The band is retained in place by a retaining ridge or ring around the neck of a bottle or other container. As the cap body is urged apart from the band (for example by rotating the cap, if threaded, about the neck of a bottle) the bridges break. By examining whether the bridges have broken, it is clear whether the container has been opened.
The reference to any background information in the specification is not, and should not be taken as, an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that this forms part of the common general knowledge in any country.
Summary
It is an object of an embodiment of the present invention to provide a container including or for use with a tamper-evident cap and which will overcome or eliminate problems with such at present, or at least provide the public with a useful choice. Other objects may become apparent from the following description, which is given by way of example only.
According to one aspect, there is provided a container for use with a tamper-evident cap having a top, a tubular skirt depending therefrom and including a thread on the inner surface, and a band connected to the skirt by a number of frangible bridges; the container having: a tubular portion including a thread on the outer surface thereof and which is adapted to cooperate with the thread of the tamper-evident cap in use; a circumferential protrusion arranged below the thread and arranged to prevent the band from separating from the container in use; a circumferentially extending surface arranged below the circumferential protrusion, the circumferential protrusion and circumferentially extending surface together forming a .0 circumferential recess for retaining the band in use; wherein the circumferential protrusion, extending surface, and recess have a cross-sectional profile in which the circumferentially extending surface extends at an acute downward angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion; and wherein at least part of the cross-sectional profile corresponds to an inner cross-sectional profile of the band.
The container may have a substantially cylindrical or tubular profile such that the tubular portion is a top portion of a larger tube. In other embodiments the tubular portion may comprise the neck of a container, the majority of this having a cross-section larger than that of the neck. Whilst a circular cross section cylinder is provided in an embodiment, other embodiments may have square or other cross sectional shapes.
The circumferential protrusion may be a ring around the neck or other part of the container, and may have a rectangular, semi-circular, triangular or other shape cross-section. The protrusion may be continuous or partial, for example having projections ranged around the circumference of the container.
The circumferentially extending surface may be a second ring around the neck or other part of the container. The surface may be continuous or partial, for example having projections ranged around the circumference of the container. This surface is angled downward from the top of the container, having an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion. The surface having this angle may form part of a ring or partial ring around the container which may itself have a number of cross-sectional shapes. This may include semi-circular such that an upper surface of the ring, including the circumferentially extending surface, has a number of angles with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion.
The cross-sectional profile of the circumferentially extending surface, recess and circumferential protrusion has at least a part which corresponds to an inner cross-sectional profile of the band of a cap which in use helps retain the band within this profile and ensures a clean separation from the cap when rotated. The corresponding profiles may occur on the circumferentially extending surface and/or the circumferential protrusion.
GEC510008NZPR 303096299
In an embodiment the cross-sectional profile of the circumferentially extending surface corresponds to the inner cross-sectional profile of the band.

Detailed Description.
Figure 1 shows a known tamper-evident cap 100 having a top 112 and a tubular skirt 110 depending from the top, and which together form the cap body. A thread 114 is arranged around the inner surface of the skirt 110. Thread 114 may be a multi-start thread, such as a triple-start thread, and may have a substantially steep helical angle. Either or both of these features serve to allow the cap to move downward along a co-operating thread with reduced rotational movement. As is common in the art, the thread 114 may be a right-hand thread. The thread 114 may be composed of a number of raised parts which are interrupted at regular intervals, thereby defining substantially non-raised sections 116 alternatively the thread may be continuous or of any other suitable arrangement.
A band 122 is connected to the skirt 110 by a number of frangible bridges 120. The bridges 120 are adapted so that they break when a pre-determined amount of force is used to rotate the cap body, with the band 122 remaining substantially stationary, thereby dividing the assembly into a separate cap body and band. The pre-determined amount of force may be chosen to enable an ordinary user (a person or machine, depending upon the application) to break the bridges without undue excursion. An increased angle of thread pitch increases the rate of parting of the tubular skirt 110 and the band 122. This can result in a "cleaner" break of bridges 120, as the plastic has less time to potentially stretch and orientate and thus strengthen. The band 122 may include a number of inwardly-pointing protrusions 126 for retaining the band 122 in position on a bottle neck or similar part of a container.
Figure 2 shows the cap of Figure 1 installed as part of a known container 200 having a tubular portion or neck 260 together with a larger portion 250. The tubular portion or neck 260 of the container 200 includes a thread 265 for co-operating with the thread 114 of the cap 100. The container also comprises a circumferential protrusion 270 which functions to retain the band 122 in place when the rest of the cap 100 is unscrewed and opened away from the container.
GEC510008NZPR 303096299
In use the cap 100 is applied to the container 200 to seal its opening 255. When screwing the cap 100 on to the neck 265 of the container, the band 122 is forced over the circumferential protrusion 270, and is then retained below the protrusion 270 even when the rest of the cap is screwed off the container neck 265. The cross-sectional shape of the circumferential protrusion 270 facilitates this by extending gradually on its upper surface to allow the band to squeeze over this, whereas the lower surface of the circumferential band extends abruptly preventing the band from moving upwards towards the opening 255.
The inventor has appreciated a problem with this arrangement in that when most of the frangible bridges have broken but one or two remain intact, then the band is pulled off-centre and twisted with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bottle neck. This together deformation of the plastic band can enable unscrewing of the cap 100 without a complete break from the band 122, thereby requiring a user to manually separate the cap and band. In a related problem, the band twisting and deformation may cause the band to slip over the circumferential protrusion thereby coming away with the rest of the cap, again requiring a user to manually separate the two. The inventor has discovered that the band can be more securely retained by employing a container having a cross-sectional profile with corresponds to an inner cross-sectional profile of the band. This arrangement more securely retains the band thereby ensuring cleaner breaking of the frangible bridges to the rest of the cap when unscrewing from the container. In addition this profile correspondence accommodates greater dimensional variance in the band and/or container. This latter advantage is particularly beneficial when the container is manufactured of glass as it is more difficult to control dimensional tolerance when manufacturing using this material.
A container according to an embodiment is shown in Figure 3. The container 300 includes a tubular portion 360 adjacent an opening 355 thereof. The container also comprises a wider portion 350 which may be used to retain capsules, pills or other consumables for example. A shoulder portion 352 connects the wider portion 350 to the tubular portion 360. The tubular portion comprises a thread 365 for co-operating with a cap. The container also comprises a circumferential protrusion or projection 370 below the thread 365 and a circumferentially extending surface or outwardly angled surface 380 below the circumferential protrusion. The circumferential protrusion is arranged to prevent the band of a cap from separating from the container in use, and together with the circumferentially extending surface forms a circumferential recess 390 for more securely retaining the band. The circumferential protrusion 370 and the circumferentially extending surface 380 may both be implemented using respective .0 continuous rings as shown, although alternative arrangements are contemplated, for example GEC51000NZPR 303096299 including partial or intermittent rings such as spaced protrusions. The circumferentially extending surface 380 may alternatively form part of the shoulder 352. In a further alternative the container may be cylindrical in shape, having no shoulder, and with the tubular portion extending to the bottom of the container. In another embodiment, the other portion 350 may be slightly wider than the tubular portion 360, extending to the width of the outside of the cap in order to provide a "slim-line" appearance of the container and cap.
The circumferentially extending surface 380, the circumferential recess 390, and the circumferential protrusion 370 have a cross-sectional profile in which the circumferentially extending surface 380 extends at an acute downward angle B with respect to the longitudinal axis A of the tubular portion 360. The terms downward and below are used to indicate more distant from the opening 355. Such an arrangement prevents twisting of the band in use with respect to a transverse axis C of the tubular portion. This is because when the band does start to twist the circumferentially extending surface presents a surface for the band to push against and therefore prevents excessive twisting enabling the final frangible bridge to be broken. In addition part of the cross-sectional profile of the circumferential protrusion 370, extending surface 380, and recess 390 is arranged to correspond to part of an inner cross-sectional profile of the band. This matching or correspondence between parts of the cross-sectional profile of the container and band further supports retention of the band in the recess without twisting and accommodates greater dimensional variations in either or both of these parts.
Figure 4 shows the container of Figure 3 in cross section together with a tamper-evident cap secured thereto. The tamper-evident cap 400 includes a tubular skirt 410 having a thread 414 on its inner surface and arranged to co-operate with the thread 365 of the tubular portion 360 of the container. Frangible bridges 420 connect the tubular skirt 410 to a band 422 having an inner cross-sectional profile matched or corresponding to that of the container at its circumferential protrusion 370, and/or circumferentially extending surface 380, and/or circumferential recess 390. This arrangement is described in more detail below with reference to Figure 6.
Figure 6 shows a cross sectional detail of a container having a tamper-evident cap according to an embodiment. A tubular skirt 610 of the cap is connected to a band 622 by frangible bridges (not shown). The band has an inner cross-sectional profile 624 which matches or corresponds to that of the container. The container comprises a circumferential protrusion 670 having an upper cross-sectional profile 672 and a lower cross-sectional profile 674. The upper cross sectional profile 672 extends at an acute downward angle with respect to thelongitudinal axis A
GEC510008NZPR 303096299 of the tubular portion. This allows the band 622 to slip over this surface when the cap is being applied to the container. The lower cross-sectional profile 674 typically extends at a right angle or an upward angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion. This prevents the band from slipping back over the circumferential protrusion 670. The circumferentially extending surface 680 may be the upper surface of a second circumferentially extending protrusion 682, or in alternative embodiments may form part of a shoulder to a wider portion of the container. The circumferential recess 690 may be any suitable cross-sectional shape. The circumferential protrusion 670, the circumferential recess 690, and the circumferentially extending surface 680 together have a cross-sectional profile indicated by the shaded area 695.
The inner cross-sectional profile of the band 624 is arranged to correspond or match in shape at least part of the cross-sectional profile 695 of the container. The shape matching is typically done at the circumferentially extending surface 680, but may additionally or alternatively include the circumferential recess 690 and/or the circumferential protrusion 670. The inner cross sectional profile 624 of the band 622 may correspond in shape with the upper cross-sectional profile 672 of the circumferential protrusion 670 and the cross-sectional profile 682 of the circumferentially extending surface 680. This helps to ensure a close fit between the band and neck of the container in order to prevent the band from twisting off when the cap is rotated and removed. The cross-sectional profile of the circumferentially extending surface 680 may comprise a substantially straight line or may include a curve of increasing angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion.
Figure 7 shows an alternative embodiment in which the band 722 has an inner cross-sectional profile 724 which corresponds in shape only with the circumferentially extending surface 780 of the container. The part of the cross-sectional profile of the container which corresponds to this inner cross-sectional profile 724 of the band is shown as a partially shaded area 797. In this embodiment the inner cross-sectional profile 724 of the band does not match the part of the cross-sectional profile of the container corresponding to the circumferential protrusion 770, however this is still sufficient to reduce the likelihood of an intact frangible bridge when the cap is removed,
Figure 5A shows a container with partially removed tamper-evident cap and according to background arrangements. It can be seen that some frangible bridges are still intact resulting in twisting of the band. In contrast, Figure 5B shows a container with partially removed tamper evident cap according to an embodiment. It can be seen that the band is cleanly separated from the rest of the cap.
GEC5OO8NZPR 303096299
The skilled person will appreciate that a suitably constructed mould will be used for manufacturing the container, and optionally the cap. The mould will comprise a negative or inverse profile of the container which together with a cavity mould are coupled together so as to define an inner hollow. An injection apparatus is then arranged to inject a thermoplastic material into the hollow. The material then cools, forming the container, and the moulds are then removed therefrom.
The mould comprises a tubular portion forming means such as a cylindrical section for forming a tubular portion and including a portion for forming a thread on the outer surface of the tubular portion. There is also a circumferential protrusion forming means for forming a circumferential protrusion arranged below the thread; this may be a circular recess which allows the formation of a ring in the thermoplastic. There is also a circumferentially extending surface forming means for forming a circumferentially extending surface arranged below the circumferential protrusion. This may be a second circular recess which allows a second ring to form in the thermoplastic. O The circumferential protrusion and circumferentially extending surface together form a circumferential recess; and the circumferential protrusion, extending surface, and recess have a cross-sectional profile in which the circumferentialy extending surface extends at an acute downward angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion.
This manufacturing process or method forms a container for use with a tamper-evident cap having a top, a tubular skirt depending therefrom and including a thread on the inner surface, and a band connected to the skirt by a number of frangible bridges; and wherein at least part of the cross-sectional profile of the circumferential protrusion, extending surface, and recess corresponds to an inner cross-sectional profile of the band. As previously discussed, this ensures a cleaner break of the band from the cap when the cap is rotated, thus retaining the band within the circumferential recess of the container. This in turn reduces the likelihood of the band remaining connected to the cap following rotation and removal of the cap from the container. This improves future cap resealing functionality and reduces the need for a user to have to manually fully separate the band from the cap.
The container may be formed from plastic or glass. Also other productions methods could be used, for example blowing and compression moulding.

The foregoing description of the invention includes preferred forms thereof. It will be appreciated that modifications may be made to the preferred forms without departing from the scope of the invention.
