Description

IMPROVED UTILITY SHIRT [0001] The present invention relates to an improved utility shirt, and in particular to an improved utility shirt with functional pockets.
[0002] When fishing it is usual to wear a functional utility shirt. The main function of the shirt is to cover the body fully and protect from the strong sun. The reflected UV from the water exacerbates the UV and a shirt can act as a factor 50 protection.
[0003] Typically, these shirts are long sleeved with a collar, the collar being able to be put up to protect the back of the neck. Other items, such as a neck cowl, hat and sunglasses are also worn as protection. When fishing on a boat a good fishing shirt is essential as it is likely that the trip will be many hours or perhaps all day out on the water and in the sun. When fishing out on a boat, there are many pieces of equipment and fishing gear to be used and this is typically carried in a fishing box, and cool box, with fishing rods held in holders on the boat. Personal items are carried in the pockets of the fisher’s shorts or trousers, such as small knife, keys, money, as well as small items in use such as hooks, swivels, leaders, and even a full trace and lure. These small items are mostly metal, and a potential scratch hazard.
[0004] An essential item when out in the sun, and particularly on the water, is a pair of quality sunglasses, to protect against the strong sun out on the water. The UV can be extreme and a quality pair of sunglasses to protect against UV damage to the eyes, which are prone to melanoma, is very important. An inferior pair of sunglasses may not provide the eye protection and glare reduction desired for the fishing activity. While a person may be cavalier with a pair of cheap sunglasses, these more expensive items are usually well looked after, and put in their case when not being worn to protect their delicate lens surface.
[0005] When out on the boat surf spray, salt, and sand are often blown around and contact a person’s sunglasses. Often when on the boat a person is busy with the specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 activity of fishing or the like and needs to remain in position either to control the boat or to be fishing; taking time out to get items from stored bags is not desirable. One problem is to be able to clean the sunglasses, of the sea spray and to be able to do so while fishing. A person will often be in position on the boat for a long time. It is inconvenient to need to take much with you on the boat, and oft a person will wear their sunglasses and would not bring a case or a cloth to clean the sunglasses, should they become smeared or sprayed. It is likely in a day of fishing that it will be desired to clean the glasses a great many times, however, to access a suitable eye cleaning cloth is very inconvenient, at that time. A person may end up using part of their shirt to clean the glasses as the salt spray and quickly blur the vision and it is essential to be able to see properly. Use of a shirt to clean your sunglasses is not ideal, as it may be of a rough material which will scratch the delicate surfaces of the glasses. Once the sunglasses are scratched this cannot be undone, and so is highly undesirable. Rough material may scratch the glasses, and worse if there is some dirt, or sand on the shirt, this will compound the problem and scratch the glasses deeply; scratched glasses will provide less clear vision.
[0006] Electronic devices such as a mobile phone also have screens vulnerable to scratching if a clean and soft suitable cloth is not used. Other electronic devices may have screens or controls it is desired to keep safe and clean. These other electronic devices may be a personal EPIRB, GPS tracking device or an l-Pilot (Trade Mark) and these can be useful used with the invention and the fixed, readily locatable cleaning cloth.
[0007] The inventor has therefore developed a new form of utility shirt that provides a significant improvement over the prior art to enable a glasses cleaning cloth, that is fixed within a convenient location. The cloth can therefore be used at any time, in a guaranteed clean manner, and is always ready for use. There is no need to go searching for the cloth, it is fixed in place so that it is always where it is expected to be, at the functional cleaning pocket. The invention may also be used for eye glasses or prescription sunglasses in equal measure. Where electronic devices, specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 such as an l-Pilot (Trade Mark), or personal GPS tracking or epirb devices are used it is desirable to keep these safe and clean. Any controls or screens of these devices may need cleaning and the fixed cleaning cloth is kept safe and clean, ready for this purpose.
[0008] Other functional pockets for other purposes are also included, each with a significantly improved form of utility shirt, useful for fishing and other pursuits where a person may be inconvenienced if they are unable to suitably clean their sunglasses. There are increasingly a number of electronic devices or controllers to be used when fishing on a boat. For example, sounding devices or echo location to look for schools offish, tracking or control, and the ubiquitous portable electronic device, such as a smart phone. With the integration of apps into many aspects of life a person may wish to carry their mobile phone close. Fishing is a dirty business at times, with baiting hooks and killing the fish leading to blood and fish to get on the hands and clothing. Mobile phones need to be kept clean, and it would be highly undesirable if fish, or blood got on the phone. If the phone is kept in a pocket the pocket must be secure, and suitable so that salt and sea spray do not contact the delicate workings of the phone, which may shorten the life of the device.
[0009] Boats lurch and lean during travel and so use of a pocket that may be suitable during everyday where will not be suitable on a boat due to the high risk of the phone falling out of the pocket or becoming wet or dirty. Therefore, the useful resource for safety and information of a mobile phone is often put away in a bag or locker, and is not accessible during fishing. It would be very useful to be able to regularly look at the mobile phone to check for government weather alerts, maps, fish information including size and other limits, while fishing in addition to the usual safety radios.
[0010] Included in the invention is a functional pocket with a closure and an open pocket for ready access to enable the convenient holding of an electronic device such as l-Pilot (Trade mark) personal EPIRB, personal GPS tracking device, or mobile phone in the shirt. A choice can be made for ready access in the central specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 open pocket or to secure the electronic device, and this may be varied in different activities. The closure keeps the items inside safely carried with the person. In this way a person can, have all the desired electronic devices carried appropriately, and these and sunglasses readily cleaned through use of the cleaning cloth. In combination the functional cleaning pocket and the other functional pockets provides a very useful improved utility shirt.
[0011] Overall, use of the improved utility shirt enables the electronic devices to be kept safe, and the sunglasses and electronics be cleaned with the reliable fixed cleaning cloth. Further the combination of other additional useful functional pockets, central open pocket, and zipped pocket such as on a sleeve provides a significant improvement over the art.
[0012] Although on first view, the invention may seem a simple one, there is nothing like it on the market to solve this problem, as far as the inventor is aware, and yet there has been long a need to solve these problems. It is considered likely that the industry will rapidly wish to adopt the functional features of the invention, individually or most usefully in combination once they become known.
[0013] The following describes a non-limiting example of the invention being used with reference to a fishing shirt. The invention is a very useful one for any form of utility shirt, including working on the land, tradesperson wear, hunting, or in fact any activity where use of the invention may be of benefit. Therefore, it is not intended to limit the invention to use as a fishing shirt, other than as limited by the claims. The specification also makes reference to sunglasses, and electronic devices in particular, how the invention may be used for any suitable glasses for the activity, or any electronic device. Again, the activity is not limited to fishing, but may be any suitable activity where use of the shirt is of benefit. The shirt form of the invention is useful but the arrangement may be used in any form of clothing.

specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 [0042] Referring to Figures 1 to 4, a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where utility shirt 1, has body 10, with front 12 and collar 14, in the usual manner. Sleeves 16 and 18 are attached to body 10 to provided protection to the arms as well as the body. Full coverage of the body is preferred for sun protection but short sleeved or sleeveless forms of the invention may be used instead.
[0043] Each sleeve 16 and 18 includes cuff 20 and 22, to cuff to the wrist, useful to keep the sleeves on the arms and to keep the wearer protected from the elements. Button closures 24 are used to close the neck for the collar so as to be able to loosened for removal or closed to protect against sun or the wind.
[0044] Utility shirt 1 is in the form of a standard adult shirt size “Large”, as would be well understood in the art. However, the particular dimensions or size of the shirt is not essential to the invention. The shirt can be for men, woman or children, and in any suitable size. Use of the functional pockets is not altered by the size or form of the shirt.
[0045] As illustrated the majority of utility shirt 1 is made of polyester. Usually fishing shirts are highly decorated, but as illustrated the shirt is a plain colour. Any suitable form of decoration may be used, including a highly decorated through use of printed polyester.
[0046] The polyester used for utility shirt 1, is similar to other fishing shirts, and is of sufficient thickness to provide an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50, which is the high level of protection desired for being out on the water. The durable polyester material will be readily washed ready to wear for next trip, and will last for many years. As a lightweight material when worn the material is cool when it is hot, and if it gets damp through sweat or sea-spray it will very quickly dry. Ina cold wind the protection of the shirt protects against the cold and will keep the wearer warm and comfortable. Weather conditions on the water often changes rapidly and so the fishing shirt is useful in this way to be cool or warm as needed.
specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 [0047] The invention includes use of functional pockets, as illustrated, three pockets 26, 28, 30 with respective openings 34, 36 and 38. These pockets have each been carefully designed through long experimentation, to individually, and in combination provided significantly useful solutions to problems encountered during activities. As mentioned elsewhere, the shirt is very useful for fishing, hunting and similar activities. However, the shirt can be seen to be extremely useful in any practical applications where the hands are in use, and it most convenient to carry with you all the devices, and items you need to conduct the activity once undertaken.
[0048] Most important to the invention is the inclusion of cleaning pocket 26. Cleaning pocket 26 can be seen attached to front 12 of body 10, and as illustrated includes a separate rectangle of material that is sew through strong stitching to the material of shirt 1. The rectangle of material is sized 140 millimetres wide and 155 millimetres long, and is made of the same polyester material as the body of utility shirt 1.
[0049] Cleaning pocket 26 is a very useful pocket to provide a fixed cleaning method for items used during the activity, that cannot get lost or dirty. The invention provides a very convenient and useful functional pocket to enable the cleaning of glasses, the screen of a phone or other electronic devices used during the activity, with the cloth kept fixed in place so there is no need to search through pockets or bags to find the cloth. Further the cloth is kept clean and isolated from dirty materials so that it is clean, dry and ready to clean the items at all times. Further the pocket and cloth can itself be used to protect and keep safe, clean and scratch free one or two items, namely a pair of sunglasses when not being worn and or a phone.
[0050] Open pocket 28 is shown centrally on front 12 of utility shirt 1, next to cleaning pocket 26. Clearly, there could be some rearrangement of the positions of the three pockets. However, the particular arrangement illustrated has been shown to be of particular use and functional practicality. Open pocket 28 is specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 designed as a pocket open at an upper edge, for ready access to the items carried within. Open pocket 28 is particularly convenient and useful to hold items that it is desired to keep safe and close for rapid access as soon as required, for example in response to a finding a good fishing spot, and controlling or tracking the boat.
[0051] Similar to cleaning pocket 26, open pocket 28 is constructed to include a separate rectangle of material sewn strongly to the underlying material of shirt 1. The rectangle of material is sized 105 millimetres wide and 135 millimetres long, and is made of the same polyester material as the body of utility shirt 1. Each of the pockets is illustrated as polyester but alternative materials may be used for each, and one or more of these could be made of a plastics, mesh, or other arrangement to suit the needs of the use. For example, it may be useful to be fully waterproofed, or it may be useful to be made of a mesh material that allows air flow, to prevent overheating.
[0052] Zippered pocket 30 is the third pocket of the subject inventive shirt, which is located usefully on a sleeve. Clearly, any number of these zippered pockets 30 could be included about the body or sleeves as may be useful for the user while conducting the activity. The third pocket, zippered pocket 30 includes a separate rectangle of material that is sew through strong stitching to the material of shirt 1 at a position on the sleeve so that it may be readily accessed. Conveniently pocket 30 may be positioned at a higher location on the left sleeve 18 so that a righthanded person can easily use their favoured hand to access pocket 30. The rectangle of material is sized for pocket 30 is illustrated as 135 millimetres wide and 150 millimetres long, and is made of the same polyester material as the body of utility shirt 1.
[0053] Cleaning pocket 26 includes cleaning cloth 32, made of a microfibre cloth, similar to that provided by glasses manufactures to clean glasses. The soft, fine textured cloth is important as it is important that the cloth does not scratch an item cleaned therewith such as glasses or phone screen. However, in inferior forms of the invention may use other forms of material for cleaning.

2020100183 05 Feb 2020 [0054] Cleaning cloth 32 is fixed centrally at opening 34 of pocket 26 as very convenient for use for cleaning and to have certain knowledge to the location of cleaning cloth 32. Opening is formed of a hem and reinforcing stitching in the usual manner. Further reinforcement may be included for these frequently used pockets. Cleaning cloth 32 has been hooked out by a hand through opening 34 from the first state, where cleaning cloth 32 is fully maintained within pocket 26, and the second state, as shown, out and ready to be used to clean a phone or glasses. The arrangement of cleaning cloth 32 and its sewing to the inside of pocket 26 enables it to fit readily in the first state in the pocket, flat and comfortable. A quick hand movement then enables the change from the first state to the second state. After use cleaning cloth 32 can be returned from second state to the first state. Cleaning cloth 32 as illustrated is a large cleaning cloth suitable for use on glasses, and electronic devices. As illustrated cleaning cloth 32 is 135 millimetres by 155 millimetres.
[0055] Open pocket 28 likewise is open through hemmed opening 36, a large opening that can readily allow access to the items contained therein. The open nature of open pocket 28 with opening 36, makes it particularly suitable for devices that need to be kept close at hand for navigation or control of a boat, for example. The items may be an l-Pilot (Trade Mark) control, a personal EPIRB device, or a GPS tracking device. Each of these may include audible controls or alarms, which if kept suitably close will alert the user to access these. Other devices may vibrate to draw attention to themselves or include lights and or sound alarms. The devices will be those that are readily to be looked at referred to during the activity and that are wanted to be kept safe. Clearly different activities will necessitate the carrying close of different devices but the principal will be similar.
[0056] Zippered pocket 30 is closed at opening 38, by a strong standard zip (not labelled), which closes completely. Other closures could be used instead but a zip is particularly useful to firmly close zippered pocket 30.

2020100183 05 Feb 2020 [0057] In normal use, a person will wear the shirt when heading out to undertake a fishing trip, for example. When preparing for fishing the boat, safety equipment and fishing equipment will be carefully chosen, packed and prepared. Personal items will be carried with the person, and in particular items for use once in place on the boat will be chosen. Sunglasses are usually worn, but while not being worn these can be carried in the cleaning pocket 26, protected or wrapped to at least some extent by cleaning cloth 32. With care the mobile phone may likewise be carried, provided there will be no damage to the sunglasses. Again, cleaning cloth 32 can be used and in this case where there are two items the cloth may be used to separate the two items to act against contact damage.
[0058] For controls and devices that need to be kept close at hand open pocket 28 will be used, so that these devices can be rapidly removed as required. The activity will define the nature of the device, but it may be an l-Pilot (Trade Marks) control and a personal EPIRB, both of which need to be kept very close at hand. The items are readily put in and out of open pocket 28 as required. In an emergency EPIRB must be kept close and at hand ready for use, so open pocket 28 is perfect to do so. When tracing and tracking fish, through wave devices use of a remote control is highly desirable to control during the fishing activity itself. To have open pocket 28 central and open for quick access for these useful devices is particularly useful.
[0059] Zipped pocket 30 may be used for any of the aforementioned items, such as in rain or rough weather for additional protection. However, in the usual use, small items that are required to be kept safe can be usefully zippered into the pocket.
[0060] Most usefully therefore, the three pockets can be used to contain items to be zippered away in pocket 30, open pocket 28 and cleaning pocket 26, as appropriate. In this way the person can continue fishing for a long period and have ready access as carried by utility shirt 1 all the necessary items. If during the day the sunglasses get salt sprayed as commonly occurs, the person can easily reach to cleaning cloth 32 and hook out of the first state contained in pocket 26, and into specPA2069120
2020100183 05 Feb 2020 the open second state ready for use. The person can then clean the sunglasses with an appropriate cloth, and avoid scratching or dirtying the glasses. As the location is fixed and the cloth fixed the person does not need to go looking for the cloth. The known location is an important advantage. When fishing there may be a lot going on, and so if the cloth is accessible quickly from a known location even in the middle of the fishing activity it can be found and used. Being able to see clearly is a significant advantage of the use of the invention. Further, the cloth is not only known, it is a special microfibre to be the best to clean the glasses and has been kept clean, so as to only clean and not dirty the glasses.
[0061] Similarly, when the screen or buttons of the l-Pilot (Trade Mark) remote, or similar device, or of a mobile phone this can readily be cleaned with cleaning cloth 32. Sadly, often a person will be put in a spot where they need to clean their glasses or a screen, and will be forced to use their shirt or similar to clean them. The shirt is likely to introduce more salt, sweat and dirt, and this is clearly undesirable. With use of the invention, the person will always have the perfect cloth to clean their glasses or electronic devices, ready and handy for use. The devices themselves may be contained in open pocket 28, until needed, and then readily removed, looked at, and cleaned in need be, and then returned. Small items that can be readily lost can be easily kept safe in zippered pocket 30.
[0062] It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that changes may be made to the embodiment disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its various aspects.
