DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0020] Referring to Figures 1 to 8 there is illustrated a rendering or work aid component according to one embodiment. As shown the component 10 comprises a main body 12 which is elongated in
form and having opposed ends 13 and 14 with a longitudinal axis X-X extending from one end 13 to
the other 14. The longitudinal axis X-X is shown in Figure 3. The main body 12 is in the form of an
extruded profile 16 and may be formed from any suitable material such as plastics material or more
particularly polypropylene. It will be appreciated that it may be formed by other techniques and
other materials may be used.
[0021] The main body 12 when viewed in cross-section or from one of the ends 13 or 14 as in Figure 7 or 8, comprises a base wall 18 having an inner side 20, an outer side 21, and inner end 22 and an
outer end 23. The main body 12 further includes a laterally extending inner arm 25 at the inner end
22 of the base wall 18. The inner arm 25 extends laterally away from the inner side 20 and, as shown
is at about 900 to the inner face of the inner side 20. The main body 12 further includes an outer arm 26 at the outer end 23 of the base wall 18. As shown the outer arm 26 extends laterally away from
the inner face of the inner side 20 in the same direction as the inner arm 25. Thus the base wall 18,
and the arms 25 and 26 form a channel 27with an open side.
[0022] The main body 12 further includes a flange or leg 30 at the inner end 22 of the base wall 18, the flange or leg 30 extending away from the base wall 18 in the direction of the longitudinal axis X-X.
As shown the flange or leg 30 is substantially collinear with the base wall 18. The flange or leg 30 has
an inner side 31 and an outer side 32 having surfaces which are substantially coplanar with
respective surfaces of the inner side 20 and outer side 21 of the base wall 18.
[0023] The main body 12 further includes a weakened or frangible zone 33 at the junction between the ends of the flange or leg 30 and the base wall 18. As shown the zone 33 is in the form of an
elongated groove or score line 26 which extends along the main body 12 in the direction of the
longitudinal axis X-X. As shown the groove 36 is in the outer side or immediately adjacent the outer
side 21 of the base wall 18, and is between the outer sides 21 and 32.
[0024] The work aid component 10 further includes an attachment element 45 on the outer side 21 of the base wall 18. As shown the attachment element 45 comprises adhesive tape 47 secured to the outer side 21of the base wall 18. The tape 47 may be in the form of double sided PE foam tape.
Other types of attachment elements may be suitable in certain applications. For example an adhesive
may provided directly on the outer side of the base wall 18. In other cases fasteners such as screws
or nails may be used. Double sided foam tape is preferably used because windows frames, and other
P5838AU00 surfaces to which it may be attached are usually aluminium or timber, while walls may be brick masonry or some other material. The foam tape 47 allows for different rates of expansion.
[0025] The work aid component 10 further includes a retaining element 48 on the inner side 31 of the flange or leg 30. The retaining element 48 may be in the form of double sided tape.
[0026] Figures 9 to 16 illustrate an installation 60 which comprises a plurality of work aid components 10. In this particular application the structure 50 to be rendered comprises a base wall
51 which as shown is a brick wall having a main wall surface 56. The base wall 51 has an opening 52
therein for receiving a window frame 55. As shown the window frame 55 abuts against a lateral
surface 57 of the base wall 51.
[0027] The installation 60 comprises four work aid components 10 (only two are visible) which are arranged together to form a rectangular frame. The adjacent ends of adjacent components 10 are
configured to form a joint. To this end one of the components 10A has a cut-out section 62 in the
flange 30 thereof which receives the end of the adjacent component 10B. The cut-out section can be
created by use of a knife or side cutters as required. As shown the outer arm 26 of each component
10 abuts against the lateral surface 57 with the flange 30 overlying the window frame 55. When
installed the attachment element 45 and tape 47 secures the components onto the wall surface 57
so as to secure the components in place. As shown in Figure 12 a cover 70 is attached to the retaining
element 46 so that the cover overlies and provides protection from splatter during rendering for the
window panes or opening.
[0028] Render 75 is then applied to wall surfaces 56 and 57. The render fills the channel 27 terminating at the inner arm 26. Once the rendering process has been completed, the cover 70 can
be removed, then flange 30 can be removed by tearing along the weakened zone 33, or they can be
removed simultaneously. This is illustrated in Figures 13 and 14. As shown in Figures 15 and 16 the
installation enables a smooth finish at the inner edge of the rendered section on lateral surfaces 57
provided by the surface of the inner arm 26.
[0029] Figures 17 to 22 illustrate a similar arrangement to that shown in Figures 9 to 16 except in this case the structure 50 comprises a base wall 51 to which panels 65 are attached. The panels may
be of different types such as blueboard panel's drywall panels, or fibrous cement panels for example.
Blueboard is a gypsum wall panel having a surface of paper which enables it to be covered by a thin
coating of render after installation. Drywall panels are in essence plaster type panels. Fibrous cement
panels are a composite formed of cement and reinforced with fibre materials. As shown in Figures 17 to 20 the panel 65 has its edge positioned within the channel 27. Render 75 is then applied to the
surface ofthe panels65.
[0030] Figures 23 to 26 illustrate an installation for the eave of a structure. In Figures 23 and 24 the structure comprises a base wall 51 with the eave 66 extending therefrom, which is to be covered and
protected from splattering render. In Figures 25 and 26 the structure comprises a base wall 51 to P5838AU00 which panels 65 are attached. In both cases the work aid components 10 are positioned so that the flange 30 overlies the eave 66, being the surface to be protected. The other end of a cover 70 that will be used can be secured to a fascia on the other side of the eave 66, or to the eave 66 by means of masking tape or similar means.
[0031] Figures 27 and 28 illustrate a further embodiment of work aid component 10' and 10" respectively. They are similar to that described with reference in particular to Figures 1 to 8 and as
such the same reference numerals have been used to identify the same parts. The difference is that
in these embodiments there is no outer arm 26. In the case of Figure 27, foam tape 48 is shown
attached as the attachment element 45, whereas in Figure 28 no foam tape is present as the
attachment may be by a nail or screw or glue via attachment element 45.
[0032] One of the advantages of the component 10 is that the colour from which it is moulded or extruded can be the same as the colour of the render that it is used with. Alternatively, the
component 10 gives the renderer and or the customer the option of selecting or providing a
contrasting or matching colour for the component 10 to enhance the appearance of the rendered
finish with respect to the eaves, window or door frames present.
[0033] Illustrated in Figure 29 is an extruded mitre section 100, which forms two channels at 90 degrees to each other, which can be used by a renderer to frame up external or internal corners to
be the same colour as the components 10. If the section 100 is to be used on an external corner of a
wall, the internal surfaces 101 will be adhered to two adjacent surfaces of the external corner.
Whereas if an internal corner were to receive the section 100 then outer surfaces 102 would be used
to secure or adhere adjacent the wall surfaces. The adhere can be done by double sided tape, glue or
other securing like nailing or screwing into position, depending upon the co-efficient of thermal
expansion of the respective surfaces being rendered and or being contacted by the components 10,
100.
[0034] The preferred dimensions of the features of the device 10 is that the foam tape 47 is approximately 1.5 mm thick, and makes a very strong bond to surfaces to which it is to be attached,
whereas the double sided tape 48 is a relatively inexpensive double sided tape to hold the window
opening or pane protection covers 70 in place, which may be paper, or thin sheet plastic or film.
[0035] All the walls 18, 25, 26 and flange 30 are preferably 1mm in thickness, while the walls 25 and 26 extend approximately 10mm from the outside surface 21, and the distance between the outside
surfaces of the walls 25 and 26 is approximately 10mm, allowing a snug fit for an 8mm thick blue board panel 65 into the channel 27. Additionally, the channel 27 so sized will readily receive a fibrous
cement sheet edge which is 5.5mm or 6mm thick, which is also less that the distance between the
channel 27 walls.
[0036] Illustrated in Figure 30 is another component 10"' which is similar to that of Figure 27 and 28, except that no foam tape or double sided tape is present. It will be noted that the groove 36 is, P5838AU00 unlike the previous embodiments, provided on the same side of the component 10 as the wall 25.
The flange 30 can be removed in the same manner as previously described. The embodiment of Figure 30 is useful to also show the dimensions T and W that may be utilised with the components
10, 10', 10", 10"'. For example, the components 10 can be provided with a dimension T according to
the thickness of the render to be applied to a wall. This may vary, and suppliers of the components
10, 10', 10", 10"' may provide or carry a range of components with differing dimensions T.
[0037] The dimension W is an indication of the amount of "float surface" needed to be provided for the rendered to run his float or trowel over. Thus for experienced renderers, a dimension W need
only be relatively small say of the order of 3mm to 5 mm, whereas for less experienced renderers, a
dimension W of the order of 8mm to 12 mm may be more appropriate.
[0038] The thickness of the walls 18 and 25 and flange 30 while preferably of the order of1mm, can be selected according to the rendering job at hand, and producers of the components 10, 10', 10",
10"'can provide differing thicknesses, to give the renderer a choice or opportunity to provide
differing results or effects in the finished rendered work.
[0039] If the panel 65 being used is a blue board panel or fibrous cement, then an ACRYLIC RENDER will be used, and a float or a sponge finish applied to the acrylic render. The float or sponge will finish
the render by contacting and passing over the outer surface of the wall 25, so that the wall 25 will
appear as if it is embedded into the render surface.
[0040] If the wall surfaces 56 and 57 are of cement, then an acrylic render will also be used, and generally a base coat is applied then a finishing coat. The finishing coat will be float or sponge
finished.
[0041] Cement render can only be applied to wall surfaces 56 and 57 if they are of masonry or brick. If cement render is used it will be finished with a float finish.
[00421 If MONOCOUCHE is used as the render material then it is generally finished with a SCRAPPED finish.
[0043] The invention can be used on internal surfaces too, and would have to be sized to receive GYPROX or drywall panels which are generally sized to be either 10mm or 13mm in thickness, and so
a different width channel 27 would be needed, but internal use of the device 1 is still within scope of
the invention.
[0044] While the above describes the grooves 36 as the means to allow separation of the flange 30 from the main body 12, other means could be provided to allow this separation to occur. For
example a thin wire or other means can be provided which when pulled creates the separation or
cutting of the flange 30 from the main body 12.
