IMPROVED UNDERGARMENT
The present invention relates to an improved undergarment, and in particular to an improved undergarment to improve hygiene for the wearer.
For some people, the basic, everyday things in life, can be difficult. For example, many people have medical issues that may require them to visit the toilet frequently, to urinate or to defecate, sometimes urgently. There are numerous conditions that lead a person to need to rush to the nearest toilet, and it may be that there will be some leakage if the person is not able to get to the toilet in time. The person may also be hot, sweaty or uncomfortable, and may need to change their underwear to replace with fresh, dry, clean underwear. Other conditions, including mental disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (“OCD”) or “germaphobia” may lead to the desire to put on fresh underwear more than once a day, sometimes several times a day.
For good hygiene and health it is important that a person does not continue to wear soiled underwear, and to replace sweaty, or wet underwear as soon as possible to prevent rashes or infection. There is a high risk of infection or reinfection for some people if exposed to potential contaminants for any length of time. Whatever the reason, many people carry spare underwear with them so that they may change their underwear during the day, for good hygiene, to prevent potential infection and to make the person feel comfortable in their body and in themselves knowing that they have on clean, fresh underwear.
When out of the home, the person will need to use either a public toilet, or a shared toilet in a building that is frequented by a great many visitors through the day. Toilets may be cleaned daily but it is unlikely that the toilet floor will be fully clean and hygienic at the time of a visit. The usual way for a person to change their underwear is to use two hands to remove their soiled underwear, and then step into the leg holes of the conventional underwear, passing their feet, socks and maybe even shoes through the small leg holes. There is a very high risk of contamination from the action of the feet being put through the underwear leg holes specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 and putting dirt, dust, germs, viruses or bacteria from the floor on to the underwear. Cross-contamination can occur from the soiled underwear itself. Sadly, some people can be very unwell and soil themselves and is this case there is a very high risk of cross contamination as they remove the soiled underwear to replace with clean underwear. The clean underwear may not remain clean or hygienic for long in this situation.
When changing underwear at home, the risk of contamination may be less of a concern. For example, from a carpet in the person’s own toilet, as only yourself and close family have been using the toilet and you know that it is kept very clean to maintain maximum hygiene for your own good health. However, in a public toilet there may have been hundreds of people in the cubicle since it was last cleaned, and there may be anything that has come from their feet into the cubicle as well as any spills or debris from people using the toilet themselves. Without putting too fine a point on it, there may be urine, faecal matter, and general dirt, dust, germs, viruses and bacteria from numerous people on the floor of the cubicle; it is on this dirty contaminated surface that the person stands to replace their underwear.
As the person puts their feet from the dirty floor through the leg holes it may be that there will be contact from the feet to the underwear contacting the leg holes. Further there may be contact with the inner surface of the underwear, which is very serious, as this contact can introduce the dirt, germs, viruses and bacteria close to the genitalia of the person when worn. The bacteria, given the right warm moist conditions can lead to potential infections which may manifest as a rash, spots, pustules or most seriously leading to a urinary tract infection or other internal infection where the infection is able to enter the soft and vulnerable entry points in the lower part of the body, such as the rectum. The genitals may be effected, or the bladder and kidneys, for example, and any infection in these organs is a serious threat to health. These kinds of infections are extremely painful, and often significantly damage the quality of life of the person. The person is likely to already be sick, may be recovering from, or preparing for surgery and so any additional issue such as infection can set back their recovery or preparation for surgery specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 significantly. A person may need to visit the toilet frequently while suffering the infection and is trying to treat the infection, but at the same time is vulnerable to further infection, which can lead to a vicious circle of infections. Over time the health of the person can become very worn down, through cycles of pain and discomfort, medications and their side-effects, and trying desperately to stay infection free. Where the person is also having multiple surgeries these problems, risks and discomforts are compounded many times over.
In a hot and humid area, such as the tropics, the risk of infections or spread of infectious diseases is much higher, and they last a lot longer out of the body. Where disease levels are high in a community, the risk of picking up an infection in this way is high, and clearly this is undesirable.
A person may try to juggle their personal items, clothes and put on their underwear in a public toilet without putting their underwear on the floor to do so, but it is very difficult. When it comes to trying to not touch your feet to your underwear as you put them on it is almost impossible, and so there is a risk of transferring any contaminants from the floor to the underwear. The subject invention provides a new way to wear underwear that can be put on without the need to put their legs through holes, so there is no risk to transfer contaminants to the clean underwear. The underwear is put about the person and secured at the sides in such a manner than a person can change their underwear hygienically and also unassisted, by themselves.
Many people require assistance to do everyday tasks. It may be that a person has broken a leg, or has a lack of balance, or is sick or elderly and simple tasks such as going to the toilet and changing underwear becomes difficult. The person may need to support themselves on another person or to use a rail or specially adapted toilet at home, which provides the additional support points and balance holds. The medical issue may be a short term problem, but the person will during this time require assistance to put on their underwear. For some people the condition may be long term or permanent, and for these people they work out a system with specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 friends and family to help with changing of their underwear, throughout their daily lives. However, it is highly undesirable to call for assistance every time a person wishes to change their underwear, and this limits the ability of the person to look after themselves, and be independent. The invention is useful in a very wide range of cases and for many people at different stages of life of states of health, for children, teenagers, adults or the elderly all at some time may benefit from use of the invention. For example, during and after pregnancy a woman may appreciate the use of the improved underwear for comfort and convenience. Similarly, when recovering from injury, or surgery may all mean that the person would benefit or if suffering anxiety or stress about personal hygiene.
Worries about germs, dirt, dust, viruses and bacteria are a concern for everyone, but for some people the worry triggers serious stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety can be made worse by other health issues and hormone or chemical imbalances in the body. Equally, a person who is already unwell does not need further stress or anxiety which may worsen how they feel on a particular day. People prone to a panic attack, for example, may find the worry of getting a further painful infection, causes them to be very anxious and unhappy when needing to visit a toilet away from home, and may panic. The subject invention removes or reduces much of the causes for stress, and removes triggers for panic and anxiety, so that the person can remain calm and better handle their health that day.
Being independent is important, and where a person needs help with day to day things, and especially personal hygiene it can be a strain on relationships with friends and family. The simple act of putting on fresh underwear can make the person feel much better in terms of comfort and self-esteem. It can be stressful and lead to anxiety if this process is difficult or a person needs to ask for help. The subject invention enables a person to take off the underwear, and put on fresh underwear as they please, and by themselves. The quality of life of a person may be measured in terms of the amount of independence the person has, and matters such as personal hygiene. For a person it is very important to be able to go to the toilet by themselves, and to dress themselves, unaided. Through use of this clever specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 invention a person can put the underwear about themselves, sitting, standing or lying down, by themselves, while keeping hygienic, reducing stress and anxiety on many levels.
Both underwear and outerwear, such as sports wear or swimwear may wish to be replaced during the day, and create the same difficulties for the wearer. These outerwear items are worn on show, but suffer the exact same issues as underwear. These tight items may be difficult to put on, and may easily become soiled or wet with sweat, or just generally dirty. It would be highly desirable to also have an improved garment being outerwear, that can be readily replaced by the person with improved hygiene.
The inventor has therefore developed a surprisingly clever improved underwear, than enables a person to change their underwear in a way that keeps them hygienic and that they can do themselves even if they have mobility or balance issues. The invention uses a two stage fastening system so that a person does not need to touch the underwear with their feet and can fasten the improved underwear completely themselves, one side at a time. The area of the underwear which will contact the body can be untouched during the process, due to the side fastenings so absolute hygiene can be maintained, dramatically reducing the risk of contact with potential contaminants, and risk of infections.
The invention is likely to significantly reduce infection or reinfection for the most vulnerable people suffering with conditions such as Interstitial Cystitis (“IC”), urinary tract infections, other bladder infections or conditions. The invention will also give people the freedom to change their underwear as often as they wish, and without needing further assistance. For people with anxiety or mental issues that make that particular concerned over the risks of contact with dirt or disease carrying bacteria, such as those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or “Germaphobia”, keeping clean and fresh is easy to do, and the stress and anxiety of a visit to the toilet is dramatically reduced. For those people who would like to have the comfort and confidence to change their underwear as they need, and specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 when they like this is a significant invention, giving a new freedom and independence. The invention enables an improvement to health and mental wellbeing, with a vastly improved quality of life and confidence, for those people, who then are able to look after their own underwear changes, and freshen up at will.
The invention may be used for any person who may be assisted by the improved underwear. People who may find the underwear of particular use would be pregnant women, woman with menstrual issues including those with endometriosis, woman after childbirth or with interstitial cystitis. Men or woman with bladder conditions, kidney conditions or urinary tract infections will also benefit. After surgery, including a C-section or other abdominal surgery the ability to put the underwear about the body in a comfortable and adjustable way without the need to bend is particular useful again. For other hospitalisation or injury such as a fractured limb or back injury, the reduced movement makes it difficult for a person to bend and put on underwear conventionally. A person may have a physical disability making it difficult to put on or take off conventional underwear, unassisted. For people with mental disorders, or anxiety about hygiene or other disorder (“OCD”, “Germaphobia”, panic attacks) they may wish to change their underwear even more frequently, or need to feel that they can change their underwear as often as they wish to stay calm. People with any relevant health or medical concern may also benefit from use of the invention. The invention can also be used for men, woman, children, and the elderly wherever there may be benefit in use of the invention. Therefore, the invention is very useful in a wide range of application to assist a numerous people to feel more comfortable, hygiene and act independently. No matter the cause, mental, physical or both, use of the invention is useful practically and also, importantly makes the person feel more confident in themselves, vastly improving their generally quality of life.
The following describes non-limiting examples of the invention being used with reference to undergarments for adults with a medical condition that necessitates the frequent changing of underwear. The invention is a very clever one, with a specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 great many applications for different people, adults, children, the elderly and even in the short or long term for patients recovery from injury or illness as discussed in the paragraph above. It is not intended to limit the invention in any way to use for a particular person, other than as defined in the claims. The invention is useful for people who live with medical conditions, physical or mental disorders that mean they may need or wish to change their underwear frequently, including when away from home. It is a particularly useful application of the invention that people can use the invention and change their underwear hygienically, without the need to raise their feet or bend down, and they can do so by themselves, without needing another pair of hands to help. It is envisaged that the invention will have many useful applications and it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way other than as specifically defined in the claims.
For clarity, any prior art referred to herein, does not constitute an admission that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge, in Australia or elsewhere.
It is an object of the present invention to provide improved underwear that at least ameliorates one or more of the aforementioned problems of the prior art. It is a further and separate object of the present invention to provide a method of use of improved underwear that at least ameliorates one or more of the aforementioned problems of the prior art.
Accordingly, the present invention provides improved underwear for improved hygiene for the wearer, the improved underwear including an underwear body including a front portion; and a back portion;
a first fastening region; and a second fastening region, wherein, the underwear is positioned about the body with the front portion at the front of the body and the back portion at the rear of the body and applying the specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 fasteners of the first fastening region secures a first side of the underwear, and securing the second side of the underwear so that the underwear is maintained about the person, and the fastening regions enable the wearer to remove or put on the improved underwear substantially without assistance.
The underwear may be made of any suitable material. Preferably, the underwear is made of cotton. Preferably, the underwear is substantially made of a breathable material. The breathable material may be breathable cotton. The material may be any natural material. The underwear may be made of a decorative or decorated material. The underwear may be made of a combination of materials. The underwear may include elastic. The underwear may include a wide or narrow elastic parts of the front and back. The underwear may be readily washable. The underwear may be made to disposable. The underwear may be made of a paper like material in the disposable form. The paper like material may be a thin or thick paper, plastic or compostable material, for example. The disposable form may include elastic. The disposable improved underwear may be provided in multipacks. The disposable form may provided to hospitals, hospices, or care homes for use by the patients.
The underwear may, once fastened appear similar to conventional underwear. Preferably, the underwear once fastened does not appear to be “special” or “medical” underwear in any way, rather looks like conventional underwear. The underwear may include decoration to enhance the appearance of the underwear item for the benefit of the wellbeing of the wearer. The underwear may include decorative elements. The underwear may include any decorative items chosen from the following group: applique shapes; buttons; lace; laces; ribbons; sequins; or any suitable decorative item. Rainbow zips or clips may be an example of some highly decorative aspects incorporated into the improved underwear. In the decorated form of the invention, the underwear may be adapted to appear somewhat different to conventional underwear, that is to be a highly decorative and attractive item for the person to wear. How the wearer feels about themselves is an important part of general well-being. Therefore it is important that the specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 underwear is not medical underwear or appears to be special for a person with a medical condition. In a most preferred form of the invention, the underwear is particularly attractive and makes the person feel good about themselves when they wear the underwear.
The fastening areas may include fastenings and a decorative or cover part to cover the actual fastenings themselves. For example, where the fastening is a zip, a zip covering seam may be included to give a neat appearance. In some forms of the invention the fastenings are completely covered so that it is not readily discernible that the underwear is not conventional underwear. The fastenings may be hidden. The underwear may be removed without undoing the fastenings if desired and so as to keep confidential that the underwear is anything other than conventional underwear. The underwear if removed to the floor in the conventional manner can then be replaced with a fresh hygienic pair later.
One useful adaptation of the invention is the provision of practical underwear for a person with a health condition, while also being a decorative or attractive item. It is important for the mental wellbeing of a person that they can feel attractive, and when a person is unwell, particular with bladder or menstrual issues, it can be distressing if a person needs to wear large practical underwear all the time and not feel attractive. Everyday a person dresses for practical reasons, but also to feel good about the way they look, and unattractive underwear can make a person feel unattractive and sad. For example, the invention includes, in one form, of highly decorative “sexy” underwear so that when a person is wanting to feel especially attractive the underwear can be worn, and may improve the sexual experience for both parties. The versions with lace up or heart embellishments may be one clear example of this sexy form. The particular form and cut of the underwear can be adapted too, to suit the tastes of the wearer, as described further below. Preferably, the invention enables a practical improved underwear to be worn that is also sexual attractive. Preferably, the improved underwear reduces anxiety about potentially dirty or contaminated underwear needing to be put back on after love making. It is envisaged that a wide range of underwear will be provided under specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 the invention to suit a wide range of uses and applications so that a person can choose the pair or pairs appropriately.
The cut of the underwear, and the overall appearance of the underwear may be similar to any conventional underwear. These may be briefs for woman, or “boy leg”, “g-string” or in fact any shape or style, but incorporating the inventive features. Similarly, the underwear may appear as briefs, trunks, Y-fronts, or a “g-string” for men or any other style to the taste of the wearer. The particular shape of underwear does not alter the application of the inventive features. The invention is directed to underwear, but the invention may be used for outerwear items. Where the garment is outerwear, all aspects of the invention may be as described elsewhere, except the garment is one suitable to be worn seen, rather than hidden as for underwear. The fastenings for the outerwear may be any suitable fastenings. The fastenings may be the fastenings as described in the examples. The fastenings for the outerwear may be a zip. The zip may be an invisible zip. The fastening may be hook and eye fastenings. The garment may be exercise, sports or swim wear, for example. The garment may be shorts. The garment may be swimwear. The garment may be in the form of tights, for underwear or outerwear. Preferably, the outerwear is chosen from the following group: clothing for children; clothing for men; clothing for woman; bike shorts; shorts; sports clothing; swim shorts; swimwear; and tights.
Preferably, the improved hygiene includes that the person need not touch the improved underwear to anything but their own hands and body to put the underwear on, as it is put about the body. The invention can be provided in a sterile form and taken out of the pack for use, and therefore remains sterile and hygienic throughout the process. In this form of the invention the underwear may be single use underwear. In this form of the invention the underwear may be cleaned after wearing and returned to a sterile state to be worn another day. In other forms a sterile disposable underwear may be provided for a one use, form of the invention.
The improved hygiene may include the removal of the need to touch any part of the foot or matter from the floor through the leg holes of the underwear. The specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 improved hygiene may be that there need by no foot contact at all with the underwear when putting on. The improved hygiene may include that the person can put the improved underwear on with their hands, without touching on other parts of their body. The improved hygiene may include that the person can put the improved underwear on with their hands, without touching on other parts of their body or any other areas such as a floor or toilet. A cubicle is a small area and when trying to balance and put on underwear it is highly likely that a person will not only pass contaminants from the floor but possibly also from the hands of previous person touching the toilet before them.
Preferably, the person can put on the improved underwear by themselves, without the need for assistance. Often help is needed from a family member or other carer, and it would be preferable for the person to be able to attend to their underwear by themselves. Preferably, a person can put on and or remove the underwear hygienically without the need for assistance from another person. This compares to the need for assistance to try to find the way into conventional underwear. Preferably, a person with reduced mobility, flexibility or range of motion generally can put on and or take off the improved underwear without the need for assistance.
Preferably, the fastenings enable a person to put on the underwear completely by themselves, without touching the floor or anything other than their own hands and body. Preferably, a person who finds it difficult to balance or stand on one leg, can put on the improved underwear readily and it can be applied about the body. Preferably, the improved underwear may be put about their body, and fastened securely for wear. The underwear may be put about the body when the person is lying down, rather than standing as may be useful for some people. In this form of the invention the person may lie on part of the underwear, placed in position so that they can carefully and comfortably position their body ready to fasten the underwear about their body. Or the person can lie down first or be lying down, and raise their bottom and position the underwear underneath before fastening about their body. It is advantageous that the underwear can be put about the body in range of different ways to give options to an individual to find the best way to suit specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 them in putting on the underwear. Balance can be an issue for some people and so having different options for ways to put the underwear on, in a hygienic manner is a clear advantage to the invention. Putting conventional underwear for a teenager without any health issues may be easy and it may be difficult to comprehend that for some people even that simple task is difficult and can be stressful with worries about hygiene, not injuring themselves and also feeling good about themselves and how they look in their underwear.
There may be a single fastening area. There may be pair of fastening areas on either side of the underwear body. There may be a plurality of fastening areas as suitable for a particular application of the invention.
Preferably, the underwear body is made of any suitable material. Preferably, the underwear body is made of cotton. Preferably, the underwear body is substantially made of a breathable material. The breathable material may be breathable cotton. The underwear body may be made of a decorative or decorated material. The underwear body may be made of a combination of materials. The underwear body may be made of different parts. The underwear body may include a lining. There may be multiple layers of material of the underwear body.
Preferably, the underwear body is adapted to be worn by a person who may suffer from leakage of urine or faecal waste, for example. The underwear body may include a protective or reinforcing part. The underwear body may include padding for comfort. The underwear body may include padding to absorb leakage or capture fluids. The underwear body may be adapted for receipt of replaceable pads to absorb leakage or capture fluids. Padding may be included at the gusset and elsewhere for comfort of the wearer. Absorbent padding may be included to act against accidently leakage until the person can reach the toilet. It is not always easy to find a public toilet or get to a toilet to use when out and about and so the padded range will be useful for these circumstances. Further, a range may be included for circumstances where it may not be possible to get to the toilet immediately such as plane travel or other work or leisure activities.

Preferably, there is a gusset portion between the front portion and the rear portion of the underwear body. The gusset portion may include a protective or reinforcing part. The gusset may include padding for comfort. The gusset may include padding to absorb leakage or capture fluids. The gusset may be adapted for receipt of replaceable pads to absorb leakage or capture fluids. A replaceable part may be included in the gusset to capture accidental leakage.
Preferably, the front portion of the underwear body is adapted to cover the front area of a person, similar to conventional underpants. Preferably, the front portion is generally an inverted triangular shape. Preferably, the front portion is of a similar shape to as shown in Figure 1. The front portion may take any suitable shape to fit about the front part of the wearer.
Preferably, the back portion of the underwear body is adapted to cover the back area of a person, similar to conventional underpants. Preferably, the back portion is generally an inverted triangular shape. Preferably, the back portion is of a similar shape to as shown in Figure 7. The front and back portions may be the same or different to one another, depending on the style of underwear. In some forms this may be brief and more revealing, in other forms the underwear would be larger, to give support and comfort to the wearer. In the “sexy” forms of underwear such as a “g-string” or thong there may be minimal material used for the back part of the underwear. The front portion of the underwear may be of any suitable size or design. The back portion of the underwear may also be any suitable size or design. The overall body of the underwear may be of any suitable size, shape or design to suit the tastes of the wearer.
The front portion and back portion may include shaped leg arches which when the front and back are fastened together surround the legs of the person. The leg arches may be low as in the leg holes of underwear. Or the leg arches may form a high cut brief leg. A boy leg or other cut of underwear can also be created through the shape of the underwear body portions. Adaptations may be made to the style specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 of underwear so that a range may be provided. The cut and fit may be high or low leg, to produce any suitable style of underwear. Preferably, the cut is a comfortable cut about the legs, without being restrictive to circulation. The size and shaping of the leg holes will depend very much on the tastes and particular needs of a person and so these may be varied considerably within the scope of the invention. Preferably, the leg holes are of sufficient size to fit comfortably around the person during wear.
There may be a single side to be fastened. There may be a plurality of fastening areas. Any suitable number of fastening areas may be included.

The fasteners may include any suitable two part fastenings. Any secure and readily securable fastening may be used for the improved underwear. A fastening cover may be included to cover one or more part of the fastenings, once secured.
Preferably, the underwear has a choice of fastening positions. There may be one or fasteners so that the person can choose a fit, suitable to their body that day. The person may have a different body shape day to day, with swelling or fluid retention, in different parts of the body. It is therefore a useful feature of the invention that the leg holes can be adjusted separately for each leg. In this way a fit for comfort can be established far superior to conventional underwear that has a fixed leg hole size. Preferably, the fastening regions are each fastenable in a range of positions to enable comfortable adjustable fitting of the underwear about the person. Preferably, the fastening regions may be readily fastened, independent of one another. When a person is unwell, the shape of the body may not be even and symmetrical. An inflamed or infected bladder, bowel problems or menstrual issues can lead to parts of the abdomen to swell, bloat or be too sore to touch in some parts but not in others. It is a further advantage of the invention that the two fastening areas may be adjusted independently to fasten about the body to be loose as required and tighter in other areas. Giving the person a choice on the fit is useful to enable them to find the right fit for comfort and practicality on a particular day.
The fasteners may take any suitable form. The fasteners may be snap fasteners, and may be provided in different positions to enable a range of fastening positions. The fasteners may be hook fasteners, similar to those used in a brassiere. Preferably, in this form of the invention several rows of hooks are provided and these rows of hooks provide different fastening positions for fitting comfortably about the body of the person.

Buttons, ties, laces or any other suitable fasteners may be used in the fastening area. A combination of fastenings may be used to provide a means to readily put on the underwear (or likewise remove the underwear) and to adjust to fit securely and comfortably. Elastic may be suitable for some applications, to be included in the fastening area. Again, for other people, they may find the area of the body changes size considerably depending on if they are suffering a health flare, or if they are having a good day. The adjustable fit is important as it allows the person to choose a comfortable, adjustable fit, to suit how their body is feeling that day, and be securely fitted about the body. Elasticated underwear is well known and use of some elastic is useful. However, it is advantageous in the subject invention that the fastening can be adjusted to fit about the body without use of tight or restrictive elastic that may prove uncomfortable for a person with a sore or swollen abdomen for example. An extender may be used with the fastening area. One or more extender may be used in one or more fastening area. A stretchy elastic extender may be included. The extender may take any suitable form. A stretch elastic extender may be used to extend the fastening area and provide greater fastening options for a person. A person may be suffering from a swollen abdomen so that a looser fit, and extended fastening area is desired. A person may be pregnant and wish to extend the fastening area to accommodate the change in body shape. Likewise a person with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (“IBS”) or other digestive disorders such as are caused by endometriosis or inflammation in the body may wish to relieve the pressure on their body by a looser fit. In this case, use of the extenders can provide a greater range of fastening points to loosen the fit to be just right around the body. For most people their size does not change all that much but for people with one of these conditions their dress size can alter 2 or 3 sizes from day to day, and this is a serious and significant problem with conventional clothing. Use of the subject invention means the underwear can be worn with a good fit, at a tighter fastening on a good day, and used with a looser fastening position or with an elastic extender on a bad day to allow for the sore and bloated belly.

In some forms of the invention the fastening area is on display. The look of the fastening area may be conventional, or may include decoration. In other forms of the invention the fastening area is covered. The covering may include a shaped piece of material for decoration. A decoration may cover the fastening area. An invisible zip may be used. Any suitable covering for the fastenings may be used to achieve the particular needs of the user.
In some forms of the invention a single fastening region may be included instead. In this form of the invention, the leg holes will be provided in a generous cut for comfort. Preferably, the one fastening region includes a range of fasteners, and this range enables a comfortable fit about the body of the person once fastened.
Preferably, the fastenings a strongly secure, until the person chooses to remove the underwear. Preferably, the fastening of the underwear substantially maintains the underwear in place until the person chooses to remove the underwear. The underwear may be removed as conventional underwear, if need be, such as in an urgent call to the toilet. The fresh pair of improved underwear can then be replaced in a hygienic manner.
Preferably, one or more decorative element is included. Decoration may be included at any suitable location on the underwear. Preferably, one or more decorative element is included to at least somewhat obscure the fasteners. Preferably, one or decorative patch or area is included to somewhat obscure the fasteners. Preferably, the improved underwear appear like conventional underwear. Preferably, one or more decorative element is included to cover the fasteners and make the underwear appear as conventional underwear.
The underwear may be readily removed without the need to touch the floor. The underwear may be removed through reversing the process and undoing the fasteners. The fasteners can be readily undone to remove the improved underwear. Removal of the improved underwear may be quick and easy with no need to balance or touch the floor. The removal of the improved underwear may be quick and easy so that fresh underwear can be put on instead.

Accordingly, the invention also provides a method of use of improved underwear, the method including the following steps:
a) putting an underwear body of the improved underwear about the lower body of the person, with the front portion at the front, and the rear portion at the rear;
b) fastening a first fastening area;
c) fastening a second fastening area;
whereby the improved underwear are secured about the person for wear, and that the underwear can be put on with improved hygiene, and by the person without the need for assistance.
The improved underwear of the method may be the improved underwear of the invention in any of its forms or variants.
The invention will now be described in connection with a non-limiting preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a first preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear 1, has body 10 with front 12 and back 14. These elements are common to all the embodiments with variants to fastening, style and inclusion of padding or not as required. On either side of front 12, are fastening areas 16 and 18 where a person can fasten up the underwear one side at a time. Fastenings 20 and 22 are included so that the person can hook and unhook either side of the underwear by themselves. In the conventional manner gusset 24 runs specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 between front 12 and back 14, which in this form of the invention is a standard gusset.
Body 10 is formed of a breathable cotton throughout so as to be useful cool underwear item. Front 12 appears similar to standard underwear, except for the fasteners, and likewise back 14 appears similar to standard underwear, except for the fasteners. The shaping of the legs and of how the underwear appears can be varied significantly to alter the appearance of the underwear. The variance in appearance does not alter the functioning of the invention. The leg holes fit can be adjusted by the fastening positioning, to some extent.
Fastening areas 16 and 18 are positioned on either side of front 12 so that a person can see them easily. In this form of the invention the hooks are similar to a bra hook so that a set of three hooks can be readily secured in a single action. The multiple hooks reinforce the hooking so that the person can be secure in the knowledge that the underwear will not come undone.
A person may want to put on a pair of fresh underwear, when out and goes into a public toilet. The person may be concerned about hygiene and the risk of touching an unclean surface ora dirty floor. To use the invention the person can push down the existing underwear (if conventional, or through reverse process for the improved underwear) or in any suitable manner remove the soiled item. The person can clean themselves and if they wish use hygienic wipes to clean the area of the body. Once clean, the person can take their fresh pair of improved underwear from a bag, say, and unfold them so they are open, as in Figure 2. The person can put the front 12 and back 14 parts about the body so that fastening areas 16 and 18 are aligned on either side. Fastenings 20 of fastening areas 16 can then be put together and fastening the hooks in the eyes to be secured. Once the first side is completed and fastened, the fastenings 22 or fastening area 18 can likewise be hooked and secured. The secured underwear then appears and acts like usual underwear, but has been kept hygienic.

The invention although not illustrated here, is also useful for tight items of outerwear somewhat similar to underwear, such as bike shorts, shorts, sportswear, swimwear and tights. The problems for a person dressing or undressing are the same as described for underwear. It is envisaged that some outerwear items such as those mentioned can be provided as any of the forms described for underwear in the subject specification. The fastening methods can be the same, to secure the fastening areas. Any of the described underwear may be adapted for outerwear. The adaptation is likely to be that the material will be a sports material or swimwear material suitable to wear alone. The outerwear form of the invention may include multiple layers of material. The outerwear form of the invention may include an additional lining. The outerwear form may use invisible zips as a useful fastening method.
The clever invention allows the person to change their underwear or outerwear item, to do so themselves, and that while they are doing so they can keep hygienic. The alternative is to try to wrestle their way into the leg hole of underwear, trying to maintain balance, which may be compromised in some people, and to keep clean. Ideally they wish to keep the whole process hygienic, to reduce the risk of a painful infection, but due to balance and the constraint of the cubicle it is very difficult. The availability in the future of the improved underwear will provide a new option that will allow the person greater convenience, comfort and most importantly to significantly reduce the risk of infection and the associated anxiety.
Referring to Figure 3, a second preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear has body 110 with front 112 and back 114 with fastening areas 116 and 118. These are similar to the first embodiment, enabling a person to put on and do up the underwear one side at a time. Fastenings 120 and 122 are hook and loop fastening strips (VELCRO Trade Mark) which can very readily be pushed closed, or separated to opened up. The use of hook and loop fastenings enables a flat finish to the improved underwear.

Body 110 is formed of a breathable cotton with shaping of the legs between the front 112 and back 114 parts of the body, and gusset 124.
Different to the first embodiment, is decoration 125 in the shape of a heart, making a unique and very attractive form of underwear. When a person is unwell or has a condition that requires them to visit the toilet often, this is not conducive to feeling attractive. The decorated design of Figure 3 shows how a clever invention can also appear very attractive, making the wearer feel good. The decoration can be made in any desirable shape or form to suit the desires of the wearer.
Referring to Figure 4, a third preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear has body 210 with front 212 and back 214 with fastening areas 216 and 218. These are similar to the first and second embodiment, enabling a person to put on and do up the underwear one side at a time. Fastenings 220 and 222 are a series of eyelets and laces to allow a lace up arrangement for doing up either side. The readily tightened laces can be easily done up, keeping the underwear clean and in place until the laces are loosened and the person removes the underwear.
Gusset 224 lies in the usual position and can be used to hold pads or liners as required.
Again body 210 is formed of a light cotton, suitable for underwear with shaping of the legs between the front 212 and back 214 parts of the body.
The method of use is similar but using the lace up of the fasteners rather than hooks and loop or hoop and eye.
Referring to Figure 5, a fourth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear has body 310 with front 312 and back 314 with fastening areas 316 and 318. These are similar to the first three embodiments and again are used in the same method to keep hygienic.
specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019
Fastenings 320 and 322 are a pair of zips, which easily can be done up or undone so that the underwear can be replaced.
Gusset 324 lies in the usual position and again can be used to hold liners or pads.
In use the zips 320 and 322, can be very easily done up to put on the clean underwear or rapidly undone to remove and replace. Zips will suit some people more than other fasteners, whereas some will prefer the quick exchange of pressing together the hook and loop fasteners. The invention gives a wide range of choices and options so that a person can suit their own circumstance with considerations of mobility, manual dexterity and general health.
Referring to Figure 6 and 7, a fifth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, which is similar to the first but is a single use improved underwear, with padding to catch liquids. In this form of the underwear body 410 with front 412 and back 414 with fastening areas 416 and 418.
Fastenings 420 and 422 are patches of hook and loop (VELCRO Trade Mark) which can be quickly done up or removed. Gusset 424 is in the usual location and is used with padding 426 to catch leaks if required. The product can then be disposed of after use. It is envisaged that a range of products will be available to people so they can choose the appropriate underwear for their needs on a particular day. For example, when travelling the options chosen may be different to a day at home, and again when going to work the option chose may again be different.
Referring to Figures 9 to 12, a sixth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear 501, has body 510 with front 512 and back 514. On either side offront512, are fastening areas 516 and 518 where a person can fasten up the underwear one side at a time. Fastenings 520 and 522 are included so that the person can hook and unhook either side of the underwear by themselves. In the conventional manner gusset 524 runs between front 512 and back 514, which in this form of the invention is a standard gusset.
specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019
Body 510 again is formed of a breathable cotton throughout so as to be useful cool underwear item. The styling of this form of the invention is of a “brief’ design, suitable for wear by women, with high cut legs, a popular style in conventional underwear.
Fastening areas 516 and 518 are positioned on either side of front 512 and in this form of the invention include separate eyes 530 into which hooks 532 can be fastened to hold in place. There are multiple rows which allow a fully adjustable positioning before securing, similar to the fitting of a brassiere. The body shape and comfort may alter day to day and the full adjustability enables different fits to be readily achieved by the person, to maximise comfort. It is important that the underwear is not too tight if the person is uncomfortable or sore, and the underwear must also be fitted sufficiently tightly to stay on the body.
The embodiment also features decorative stitching 534, around the leg holes and below waist band 536. Other features can be included as required, to improve decorative appearance of the underwear or to provide functional strength to improve longevity of the underwear.
The attractive appearance and range of underwear 501 is illustrated in Figure 12 with underwear 501a, 501b and 501c shown in different colours. In all other ways these forms are identical to 501. Clearly many different colours or patterns may be used as well as the ornamentation described elsewhere in combination to create the look of the improved underwear as desired.
Referring to Figures 13 to 17, a seventh preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear 601, is designed as a menswear “trunk” design. Underwear 601 has body 610 with front 612 and back 614 all a larger style to comfortably fit around the body of a man. On either side of front 612, are fastening area 616, fastening cover 617, and fastening area 618 and fastening area 619, forming an area for zip fastenings with a cover to provide a smooth, attractive profile. In this form of the invention, fastening areas 616 and 618, and fastening covers 617 and 619, are positioned at the front and side of the underwear specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 but with a larger side area for comfort of the positioning of the fastening area. The fastening areas may be positioned differently, but it is convenient to have the fastening at a flatter part of the body which may be the front, as used in this design for men, or more towards the side for woman. All options may be made available however, as required.
Fastenings 620 and 622 are zip fastenings which can be readily done up or undone at will. In the conventional manner gusset 624 runs between front 612 and back 614, which in this form of the invention is a standard gusset. Decorative stitching 634 is included around the leg holes which also strengthens and reinforces. Further decorative and supportive and shaping stitching 635 is included around the groin area, in a conventional arrangement, for comfort of the male wearer. For the male underwear, wide waist band 636 is included, which is similar to conventional underwear and so can bear logos or words, for decoration. The wide waist band also acts functionally, once the fastenings are closed the underwear is firmly in place. Wide waistband 636 as shown is elasticated is this form.
The attractive appearance and range of underwear 601 is illustrated in Figure 17 with underwear 601a, and 601 b shown in different colours. In all other ways these forms are identical to 601. The range of the trunk form of the improved underwear can be varied to suit the wearer and include different colours, patternsand designs.
Referring to Figures 18 to 20, an eighth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, similar to the sixth embodiment but with a padded gusset. Underwear 701, has body 710 with front 712 and back 714 in the form of a brief pair of underwear for woman with high cut legs, a popular style. Again, on either side of front 712, are fastening areas 716 and 718 where a person can fasten up the underwear, one side at a time, as described elsewhere. The rows of hooks and eyes are arranged to be suitable for adjustable fit, to suit the comfort of the person on a particular day using fastenings 720 and 722. The hook and eye fasteners are labelled separately on the drawings, showing the choice of fastenings.
specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019
Different to the sixth embodiment, the underwear includes a padded gusset 724 which provides comfort to the wearer and can capture accidental leakage, to give additional confidence. The padding as shown is integral to the underwear but gusset 724 may be adapted to receive a disposable pad to capture leakage, in other forms of the invention. The padding in any of the forms of the invention can be useful to add comfort when sitting if a person is sore in the genitals area, or from infections, or menstrual issues. The choice of padding can be focused to the needs of a person on a day, whether it be comfort, or absorbency.
Hook and eye fasteners are used in this form of the invention including eyes 730 and hooks 732 which can close together in the usual manner.
Body 710 is made of a soft cotton, with reinforced stitching 734 to provide style and support to the design. As illustrated reinforced stitching 734 surrounds the waist band and leg holes. The leg holes can include some structure to assist to hold firmly to the body, such as for confidence when menstruating, or can have a looser fit. Waistband 736 is also edged by reinforcing stitching, and the appearance of the underwear has added style with the addition of these additional stitching rows. Variation may be made to the type and form of the stitching as required. Waistband 736 includes some elastication to assist to hold up the underwear when fastened.
The padded gusset and reinforcing stitching assists to maintain the underwear firmly in place, to support in case of accidental leakage. Loose underwear may be comfortable in some ways, but in others is not suitable as the person will not feel confident if they are worried that there may be some accidental leakage into their underwear and that this underwear itself is prone to leak onto clothing. One of the many clever aspects of the improved underwear is the adjustable fit allows the person to put on without compromising hygiene, but also that the fit can be multiply adjusted to suit the needs of the person. They can feel confident in that the underwear will capture accidental leaks, and keep the person from having to worry that these leaks may spread.

2019101479 28 Nov 2019
Referring to Figures 21 to 23, a ninth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear 801, is designed as a menswear brief. Underwear 801 has body 810 with front 812 and back 814 to create the menswear brief design. On either side of front 812, are fastening area 816, fastening cover 817, and fastening area 818 and fastening area 819, forming an area for zip fastenings with a cover to provide a smooth, attractive profile. In this form of the invention, fastening areas 816 and 818, and fastening covers 817 and 819, are positioned at the front and side of the underwear. The fastening covers 817 fold inwards for a smooth appearance and convenience of use.
Fastenings 820 and 822 (refer in particular to Figure 23) are zip fastenings which can be readily done up or undone at will. Gusset 824 in this form of the invention, similar to the women’s version of the eighth embodiment, is padded to capture accidental leakage to give comfort and confidence to the wearer. The padding is shown integral to the underwear, suitable to be washed. A disposable pad may be used instead inside the underwear, or incorporated into a pocket of the gusset.
Decorative stitching 834 is included around the leg holes which also strengthens and reinforces. Supportive/decorative stitching 835 is included also in parts around the leg holes and to support the male groin area, front and back. For the male underwear, wide waist band 836 is included, which is similar to conventional underwear and so can bear logos or words, for decoration. The wide waist band also acts functionally, once the fastenings are closed the underwear is firmly in place. Wide waistband 836 as shown is elasticated, to provide further support and comfort once in place.
Referring to Figures 24 to 26, a tenth preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, similar to the sixth embodiment, briefs for woman underwear 901. The difference for the tenth embodiment is that it features a decorative promotional image. For example, the underwear may be provided or sold as part of a campaign to raise awareness of health issues. The fundraising aspect for the promotional form of the underwear will be a useful addition. Underwear 901 has body 910 with specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 front 912 and back 914. On either side of front 912, are fastening areas 916 and 918 where a person can fasten up the underwear one side at a time. Fastenings 920 and 922 are included so that the person can do up either side of the underwear by themselves. Padded gusset 924 runs between front 912 and back 914, to provide additional security against accidental leakage.
Body 910 again is formed of a breathable cotton throughout so as to be useful cool underwear item. The styling of this form of the invention is again of a “brief’ design, suitable for wear by women, with high cut legs, a popular style in conventional underwear.
Fastening areas 916 and 918 are positioned on either side of front 912, to secure with hook and loop fasteners (VELCRO (Trade Mark)). Hook and loop fastenings are a convenient option as the two parts firmly fix together and can be quickly and easily opened or closed. The positioning enables adjustment, and the fit can be adjusted accordingly. The fastening in this way needs to be simply pressed together to seal, and so this is an added advantage to this form. To remove the underwear the underwear can be pulled down or the hook and loop fasteners pulled apart, to remove.
The embodiment also features decorative/supportive stitching 934, around the leg holes and below waist band 936. Other features can be included as required, to improve decorative appearance of the underwear or to provide functional strength to improve longevity of the underwear.
Referring to Figures 27 to 29, an eleventh preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where underwear 1001, is designed as a menswear similar to the ninth embodiment, in a “brief’ design. Underwear 1001 has body 1010 with front 1012 and back 1014 to create the menswear brief design. On either side of front 1012, are fastening area 1016, fastening cover 1017, and fastening area 1018 and fastening area 1019, forming an area for, not zip fastenings but hook and loop fastenings (“VELCRO” (Trade Mark)) with a cover to provide a smooth, attractive profile. In this form of the invention, fastening areas 1016 and 1018, and fastening specPA2066419
2019101479 28 Nov 2019 covers 1017 and 1019, are positioned at the front and side of the underwear. The fastening covers 1017 fold inwards for a smooth appearance and convenience of use.
Fastenings 1020 and 1022 are hook and loop fastenings which can be readily done up or undone at will. Gusset 1024 in this form is a conventional gusset but could also be padded, either heavily or lightly as required. The padding is shown integral to the underwear, suitable to be washed.
