Description

A DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW LOCK
FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to window locks, and more particularly but not exclusively to window locks for double hung windows.
BACKGROUND [0002] Double hung window locks have traditionally consisted of a keeper that is attached to one movable window panel, and a cam catch attached to the other movable window panel, with the cam catch moved into engagement with the keeper to retain the two window panels fixed to the closed position.
[0003] It is also known to provide the cam catch with a lock cylinder that retains the cam catch engaged with the keeper to prevent movement of the cam member from disengagement with the keeper, that is retaining the window in the closed position.
[0004] Disadvantages of known double hung window locks include engagement of the cam lock with stiffening transoms on the movable window panel that may cause damage. A further disadvantage is that the locks are not aesthetically pleasing. A further disadvantage is that the lock cylinder in many constructions is mounted in the cam member.
OBJECT [0005] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0006] There is firstly disclosed herein a window lock to engage a keeper, the window lock including:
a body having a mounting portion that is to abut a window panel, the mounting portion defining a generally flat plane;
20925644 1:hxa

[0007] Preferably, said acute angle is 10° to 20°.
[0008] Preferably, said acute angle is about 15°.
[0009] The window lock includes a housing incorporating said hollow body, with the cam member located entirely within the housing when in the second position so as to not project outwardly of the housing.
[0010] Preferably, the lock window includes a key operable lock cylinder that is moved angularly between a lock position and a release position with respect to said part, with the lock cylinder movable angularly about an axis extending generally perpendicular to said plane.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0048] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted at lock 10 for a double hung window. The lock 10 includes a cam assembly 11 that is engaged by a keeper 12. The cam assembly 11 would be attached to the lower sash panel 13, and the keeper 12 attached to the upper sash panel 14. The panels 13 and 14 are moved vertically relative to each other in the direction 59.
[0049] The keeper 12 includes a mounting plate 15 through which fasteners 16 pass to fix the keeper 12 to the sash panel 14. The keeper 12 includes a catch projection 17.
[0050] The cam assembly 11 includes a hollow housing 18 through which threaded fasteners 19 pass to fix the cam assembly 11 to the sash panel 13. The housing 18 also provides a mounting face (portion) 20 that abuts the sash panel 13. The mounting face 20 defines a flat plane 21.
[0051] The housing 18 includes a hollow body 22 and a mounting plate 23. The fasteners 19 pass through apertures 24 in the plate 23, with the plate 23 fixed to the body 22 by the fasteners 19 passing through apertures 25 in the body 22 and through the apertures 24 in the plate 23.
20925644 1:hxa
2018206835 20 Jul 2018 [0052] The plate 23 and edge portions of the body 22 abut the panel 13 to define the flat plane 21.
[0053] The body 22 is provided with a passage 26 that receives the shaft 27 that is fixed to a handle 28. The handle 28 is elongated so as to extend longitudinally away from the axis. The shaft 27 projects inwardly of the passage 26 and slidably engages the body 22 to provide for angular movement of the handle 28 about an axis 29. Fixed to the shaft 27, so as to be located internally of the body 22, is a cam member 30. In particular, the cam member 30 has a pair of spaced flanges 31 between which there extends a flange 32 of the shaft 27, so that upon angular movement of the handle 28 about the axis 29, the cam member 30 is also caused to move angularly about the axis 29.
[0054] The cam member 30 also includes a cam portion 55 having a cam surface 56 that engages the catch projection 17 when the sash panels 13 and 14 are to be retained in the closed position. The cam surface 56 extends angularly about the axis 29 so as to extend between a first location 57 and a second location 58, with the surface 56 having a direction of extension between the locations 33 and 34 that is generally parallel to the axis 29. Accordingly the surface 56 has a direction that includes a direction about said axis as well as a direction parallel to the axis 29.
[0055] The cam member 30 also includes a projection 35 that extends radially outwardly relative to the axis 29, and that engages the housing 18 to define the limit positions of the handle 28 about the axis 29.
[0056] Focated between the cam member 30 and the body 22 is a washer 36, with a threaded fastener (screw) 37 extending through the cam member 30 and to threadably engage in the shaft 27.
[0057] The body 22 is provided with a further passage 38 that receives a lock cylinder 39 that is key operable by means of a key 40. A user can operate the cylinder 39 by moving the key angularly about an axis 41.
[0058] The cylinder 39 has a cam projection (not visible in Figure 11) projecting from the end base 42 and that is spaced from the axis 41 so as to be moved angularly thereabout by operation of the key 40. The cam projection of the cylinder 39 is located to cause linear movement of a
20925644 1:hxa
2018206835 20 Jul 2018 locking bar 43. The bar 43 has a flange 44 with an elongated slot 45 within which the cam projection is located so that angular movement of the cam projection about the axis 41 causes sliding movement of the locking bar 43 in the liner direction 46. The locking bar 43 also has a plate 47 with a shaped aperture 48 including a first aperture portion 49 and a smaller second aperture portion 50. The locking bar 40 is slidably mounted in a slot 60 of the body 22.
[0059] The shaft 27 has flat portions 51 that project through the aperture 48. When the flat portions 51 project through the aperture portion 49 (Figure 12), the handle 28 is free from movement about the axis 29. However, by operation of the key 40 to move the bar 43 so that the shaft 27 projects into the aperture portion 50 (Figure 13), the surfaces 52 of the plate 47 engage the flat portions 51 preventing operation of the handle 28, and therefore retaining the keeper 12 fixed to the cam assembly 11, and therefore retaining the window panels 13 and 14 in the closed position.
[0060] Upon operation of the key 40 in a reverse direction, the locking bar 43 is moved to a position releasing the handle 28 for operation, that is the shaft 27 passes through the aperture portion 49.
[0061] Slidably mounted in the body 22 is slide 53 that slides against flanges 31 and 32 to urge the handle 28 to its end extremity angular positions, that is the position shown in Figure 2 and the position shown in Figure 3. A spring 54 engages the slide 53 and the body 22 urging the slide 53 against the flanges 31 and 32.
[0062] When installed, the plane 21 is horizontally oriented.
[0063] Preferably, the axis 29 is inclined to the plane 21 by an acute angle 54. Preferably, the angle 54 is 10° to 20°. More preferably the angle 54 is about 15°, that is 15° to the horizontal.
[0064] Preferably, the axis 41 is generally perpendicular to the plane 21, while when the lock 10 is installed the axis 41 is generally vertical.
[0065] The direction 46 is generally perpendicular to the axis 41 and transverse relative to the axis 29. When the lock 10 is installed the direction 46 is generally horizontal.
20925644 1:hxa
2018206835 20 Jul 2018 [0066] The lock 10 has a number of advantages including the cam member 30 being retractable entirely back into the body 22, particularly the hollow housing 18 so as not to project therefrom. The handle 28 is angularly movable without engaging the key 40, or the user’s hand. The handle 28 is lockable to retain the window in the closed position by operation of the locking bar 43. In respect of the locking bar 43, it should be appreciated the locking bar 43 is movable between a release position and a locking position by operation of the key 40. The handle 28 is operable when the bar 43 is in the release position while preventing movement when the bar 43 is in the lock position.
