Abstract

Abstract Stormwater litter basket arranged to sit under a kerb inlet lintel, comprising an optional diversion plate around the perimeter of a grate to divert runoff to the basket, and a bottom arranged to retain sediment using a geofabric filter insert, optionally hydrocarbon removal socks can be included, and a lip to retain pollutants in basket during high flows.

Description

It is often very costly and problematic to retrofit underground gross pollutant traps (GPTs) in an urban environment. Litter baskets which site in gully inlets have long been an alternative for capturing pollutants before they enter the drain and are discharged to creeks and oceans.. However, as they can cause blockages and local flood issues, and have high ongoing maintenance concerns, local Councils are hesitant to use them. This design combats these two main issues. It provides two means of high flow bypass, reducing risk of blockage, and it can be made of a more durable material. The location of the basket under the lintel will allow for cleaning via vacuum hose, without requiring removal of grate, so improving maintenance potential.
The innovative concepts included in this design are the rise in support bars to keep basket under lintel, the lip to trap buoyant material in the basket and the diversion plate around perimeter of grate that will divert flows to basket, while allowing high flows to bypass through centre of grate.
Baskets currently on market either rely on fabric mesh to capture pollutants, which is prone to failure, or have no reliable means of flow bypass. The flow bypass mechanisms in this design do not rely on moveable parts, thereby reducing risk of failure. Other more durable litter baskets have larger apertures, to reduce risk of blockage. However, this reduces the effectiveness of the basket to remove litter and sediment.
The following table summarises the pros and cons of this design compared to current designs on the market.
They could be made from stainless steel or aluminium. To increase pollutant storage capacity you could increase the depth. There is also potential for 3D recycled plastic printing to be used to make them, so they would be more easily customisable to different pit dimensions - but then you have the potential issue of them breaking down and micro-plastics being released, which would need to be considered.
