Abstract
Abstract The application refers to an element within profiled roofing and wall cladding systems as used in commercial and domestic construction. Our system is a profile blocking shield (referred to as "FZ -S") that encloses the profile gap between the purlin & roof. The Building Code Australia (BCA) requires that in bushfire designated areas all systems used for this function, must conform to AS3959 or be constructed from elements that are certified as non-combustible as per AS1530/1. The application therefore is for a FZ -S with an external facing shield that conforms to AS1530/1 and consists of a profile face Fig A, with a 90 degree mirror profile Fig B, (or it can be a tab which matches the high part of the front profile ) but is 2mm smaller in all dimensions to the roof profile, and it can have an optional polymeric foam part that is 2mm larger in all dimensions which is fixed onto the back of the front face Fig A, which is able then also able to create a dust and air seal (fig C). Fig AFigB Fig C FZ profile blocking shield ( FZ-S) with & without polymeric foam insert
Description
Title
Bushfire rated metallic roof profile blocking shield with an optional attached polymeric insert
Technical field
Profiled roofing and wall cladding systems for use in commercial, agricultural and domestic construction.
Background [0001] The applicant contends that where a particular system has been certified to meet the requirements of AS3959 then any change to the system negates the certification. A change would include using a different roof profile or any other construction material.
[0002] As the manufacturer of roof profile sealants, the variations of roofing systems are beyond our commercial ambit therefore to market FZ-S as a product for use in any profiled system, it must conform to AS1530/1 to meet the Bushfire ratings as set out within the BCA in its own right.
Summary of invention
Technical problem [0003] To meet the BCA bushfire rating to prevent external attack of radiate heat and the ingress of sparks and embers whilst maintaining the seal integrity against transmission of air, moisture, dust and vermin into the whole system and contend with multiple varieties of roofs [0004] Seal integrity is currently provided by standard roof infill strips constructed from materials such as closed cell thermoplastic foams, cellular rubbers, chemically impregnated open cell foams mineral fibre, glass fibre or resin impregnation of bound ceramic materials [0005] All such materials, including those that meet the requirements of AS1530/3 for internal fire rating, fail the requirements of AS1530/1 for external resistance to fire. These products are not therefore certified for use in a designated bushfire zone on their own.
[0006] In addition to this failure many of these materials utilize retardant systems within their chemical structure that produce toxic fumes and release of non ROHS substances when activated by fire.
[0007] Their fire degradation leads to gaps within the system that allows the ingress of radiate heat and sparks and ember ingress therefore propagating the fire. The construction is therefore exposed after fire front attack.
Solution [0008] The applicant proposes a profile blocking shield (FZ-S), manufactured from a metallic composite that meets the non-combustible requirements of AS1530/1 which will maintain its integrity when under attack by external fire.
[0009] The proposed FZ-S covers the gap in the roof profile (without regard to its material construction) on its external face and by bonding an optional oversized (by 2mm in all dimensions) polymeric die cut foam piece to the back of metal face with an expansion gap of 50% of the gap between the external & internal faces will also create a water & air seal . This seal occurs regardless of any normal dimensional variation in the purlin alignment or surface in relation to the roof sheet.
[0010] The proposed FZ-S can be manufactured in any profiled shape to suit the cladding profile.
[0011] The proposed FZ-S can be manufactured in any dimension to suit any variation of thickness of the inner profile but allows an expansion gap for the polymeric foam so in the event of fire , the expanding foam will not exert pressure onto the face of the FZ-S which may cause distortion.
[0012] The proposed FZ-S covers the profile of any roof on the high sections but not the pan section
Advantages [0013] The proposed FZ-S enables a rigid stand alone external facing of the profile gap to BCA Bushfire Protection standards. It provides, with the optional polymeric foam, external fire rated coverage of the roof profile while also fully sealing the gap therefore the integrity of dust moisture air and vermin resistance is not compromised and it will not aid propagation of fire.
[0014] The FZ-S can be manufactured to suit any cladding profile, any cladding size as well as in any suitable metallic material that can match the metals of any roof to avoid oxidation and or electrolysis.
Description [0015] The proposed FZ-S provides a certified external fire resistant cover with base tab perpendicular to the face and then a corresponding mirror profile or a tab, It has an optional polymeric foam insert that conforms to AS1530/3 to seal the gap of the profiled cladding system
Claims (6)
