Abstract

Abstract The application refers to a variation of the "Bushfire metallic casing" referred to as "Sliding joint for a metallic casing". An innovation patent certificate was granted on the 15 May 2015 (# 2015100652) for the "Bushfire metallic casing" to this applicant. Bushfire metallic casing is designed to seal the end gap where profiled steel sheeting intersects and is fixed to a structural feature or capping. It protects against entry by fire and ingress of embers to the exposed end of steel roofing. The building fire code requires that there should be no gap larger than 2mm The manufacturing process of steel roof sheeting (roll forming) induces a random dimensional variance across the sheet. There are a number of manufacturing variables that prevail on the degree of variance, this variance can be +/- 8mm therefore outside the dimensional requirements of the bush fire code The patent applicant now proposes the sliding joint which is a three part variable metallic casing slide product that allows adjustment by the roof installer at the time of installation to ensure a less than 2mm gap per profile pitch. This application is a feature that can be added to the previously referred Bushfire metallic casing. Part A of the metallic casing sliding joint (Fig2 ) has a returned flange or lock seam, Part B (Fig3 ) hasa male tongued leading edge that slides into the seam on the inside roof side and a small up turned flange on the front edge so that the two parts are able to slide back and forth to accommodate the adjustment required and not come apart (fig 1) The application covers both the design of the slide and in addition the art of the concept of an adjustable roof infill strip The applicant claims art over the concept of a sliding metallic casing and the design of the lock seam or return flange of any particular configuration. > s' 1~' ( N I-

Description

Title Adjustable sliding joint for a metallic casing roof infill strip Technical field Sealing product for roll formed steel profiled roofing and wall cladding systems for use in commercial, agricultural and domestic construction Background [0001] The applicant contends that sheet metal profiles used in roofing vary dimensionally but any system that seals the gaps below and or above this roofing must maintain a maximum gap of 2mm to still conform to 1530.1 & AS 3959 [0002] As the manufacturer of the fixed dimensioned metal casing infill strip, we noted manufactured roofing sheet profiles vary dimensionally, yet to supply a product for use in any profiled roof or wall system it must still must conform to AS1530.1 to meet the Bushfire ratings as set out within the Building Code of Australia (BCA) once installed [0003] Manufacturers of roofing profiles therefore require a very variable solution to maintain a seal between their roofing sheet profile & the purlin. Summary of invention Technical problem [0004] To meet the BCA bushfire rating to prevent external attack of radiant heat and the ingress of sparks and embers, whilst still maintain the seal integrity against transmission of air, moisture, dust and vermin into the whole system regardless of dimensional inconsistency of the roof [0005] Seal integrity is compromised even when using our fixed metallic casing if the manufacturers sheet tolerance varies more than 2mm, which it does.
[0006] The gaps created by the variable roof tolerance variations in conjunction with use of a fixed metallic casing roof infill strip allows the ingress of radiant heat and sparks and embers therefore potentially propagating the fire. The building construction is therefore exposed to the fire front Solution [0007] The metallic casing sliding joint is designed to seal the end gap where the profiled steel sheeting intersects and is fixed to a structural feature or capping. [0008] The manufacturing process of steel roofing (roll forming) induces a random dimensional variance across the sheet of up to +/- 8mm. [0009] The building fire code requires that there is no gap greater than 2mm which can only occur if the rigid metallic casing is made adjustable to counter dimensional variation in the sheet [0010] The metallic casing slide(s) when attached to a metallic casing allows adjustment by the roof installer at the time of installation to ensure a less than 2mm gap. [0011]This design patent application proposes a sliding joint(s) that can be added to the metallic casing consisting of a male tongue that slides into a female seam. It also has a small turned up flange on the front edge of the male tongue and this allows the metallic casing to be adjusted without the metallic casing coming apart. [0012]The application covers both the design of the slide and in addition the art of the concept of an adjustable rigid roof infill strip [0013]The application also claims art over the concept of a sliding metallic casing and the design of the lock seam or return flange of any particular configuration Advantages [0014] The proposed metallic casing with sliding joint(s) enables a rigid standalone external facing of the profile gap to BCA bushfire protection standards. It provides external fire rated encasement of any inner roof infill strips that allow the integrity of the dust, moisture, air and vermin resistance is not compromised and it will not aid propagation of fire. Description [0015] The proposed metallic casing sliding joint(s) allows the rigid metallic casing to be able to be adjusted on site to maintain 1530.1/ A53959 requirements of no gap greater than 2mm and an ability to withstand 750 degrees heat .
