Abstract

A hose cart (100) with a carrier frame (102) includes a guide handle (108). The hose cart (100) includes a hose drum (110) held in the carrier frame (102). The hose drum (110) carries a hose reel wound around the hose drum (110). The hose cart (100) includes a first support bracket (210) attached to the carrier frame (102). The first support bracket (210) supports the hose cart (100) on a ground surface from a first end (104). The hose cart (100) further includes at least one second support bracket (302) attached to the carrier frame (102). The second support bracket (302) supports the hose cart (100) on the ground surface from a second end (106). The second support bracket (302) is pivotable between a first position and a second position. The first position is associated with a non- operational configuration of the hose cart (100) and the second position is associated with an operational configuration of the hose cart (100).

Description

HOSE CART
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to a hose cart, and more particularly to a pivotable support bracket of the hose cart.
BACKGROUND
One of the necessities for home ownership is a garden hose for watering the lawn, washing cars, etc. Various products are available for ease of handling and storage of a garden hose while presenting a generally neat appearance of the hose. Portable hose carts are also available which not only provide convenient winding and pay out of the hose, but additionally permit the hose to be easily moved between a use location and a storage location. Portable hose carts for convenient handling and storage of garden hoses have been commercially available for many years. A typical hose cart, on one hand, is required to be light weight, compact in size, and have dimensions as small as possible facilitating efficient logistics. In order to achieve packaging efficiency, sometimes the hose cart may not be able to stand by itself in the packaging configuration, and may fall over. One the other hand, the hose cart should also be stable while operational which requires a larger footprint area. If the hose cart is designed to cater to stability requirements only, the hose cart may take a lot more space for shipping. In such cases, the hose carts are shipped in parts and assembled by the customers. However, this poses difficulties for the customer.
To decrease the size of hose trolleys to improve their transportation it is known to provide them with pivot joints that allow to pivot its stands, thus to allow to fit a plurality of theses trolleys on top or next to each other. While the hose trolleys shown with WO 2011/141050 Al and US 2006/049295 Al describe a pivotable foot that can be moved adjacent to each other. Similarly this is the case with the most simple frame for a hose trolley shown with JP S47 18814 U 2.
The size limiting solution described with EP 2 060 526 A2 even suggests to allow for additional pivots that allow to even more reduce the hose trolley’s size in the in-operable transport configuration.
Further, some of the issues with the state of the art hose carts are inefficient standing ability, falling over of the hose cart when the hose reel is pulled off, a higher centre of mass, etc. Hence, in light of the foregoing, an improved hose cart is required which may provide large dimensions while operational, smaller dimensions for logistics and storage. Further, the hose cart should be able to be shipped while assembled.
SUMMARY
In view of the above, it is an objective of the present invention to solve or at least reduce the drawbacks discussed above. The objective is at least partially achieved by a hose cart, according to an embodiment of the present invention. A hose cart has a carrier frame. The hose cart includes a guide handle. The hose cart includes a hose drum held in the carrier frame. The hose drum carries a hose reel wound around the hose drum. The hose cart includes a first support bracket attached to the carrier frame. The first support bracket supports the hose cart on a ground surface from a first end. The hose cart further includes at least one second support bracket attached to the carrier frame. The second support bracket supports the hose cart on the ground surface from a second end. The second support bracket is pivotable between a first position and a second position. The first position is associated with a non-operational configuration of the hose cart and the second position is associated with an operational configuration of the hose cart. The pivotable second support bracket allows the hose cart to have an efficient packaging structure in the non-operational configuration as well as a stable footprint area in the operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the non-operational configuration of the hose cart is one of a parking configuration, a storage configuration, or a transportation configuration. The first position of the second support bracket facilitates usage of the hose cart in any one of the aforementioned configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the first support bracket is at least one of a set of wheels and a ground support member. The first support bracket, as the set of wheels, facilitates ease of maneuvering to the hose cart on the ground surface. Also, the first support bracket, as the ground support member, acts as a stand for providing additional stability to the hose cart from the first end on the ground surface.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the first support bracket is fixedly coupled with the carrier frame of the hose cart. The first support bracket, being fixedly coupled to the carrier frame, provides structural rigidity to the hose cart.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a centre of mass of the hose cart shifts downwards in the second position of the second support bracket. The downward shift of the centre of mass of the hose cart stabilizes the hose cart in the operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a centre of mass of the hose cart shifts upwards in the first position of the second support bracket. The upward shift in the centre of mass of the hose cart signifies a distribution of weight of the hose cart in a vertical direction, therefore reducing a footprint area of the hose cart in the non-operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a first blocking element and a second blocking element coupled to the carrier frame adjacent to a pivot point of the second support bracket, the first blocking element and the second blocking element adapted to limit a swiveling motion of the second support bracket between the first position and the second position. The first blocking element and the second blocking element eliminate the need of an additional locking element to hold the second support bracket in the first position and the second position respectively.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a ground contact point of the second support bracket lies towards the hose cart as compared to a pivot point of the second support bracket in the first position of the second support bracket. Advantageously, such a position of the ground contact point and the pivot point ensure that forces due to weight of the hose cart act to stabilize the hose cart in the non-operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a pivot point of the second support bracket lies towards the hose cart as compared to a ground contact point of the second support bracket in the second position of the second support bracket. Advantageously, such a position of the ground contact point and the pivot point ensure that forces due to weight of the hose cart act to stabilize the hose cart in the operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a weight of the hose cart stabilizes the hose cart in the first position and the second position of the second support bracket. Therefore, the hose cart is able to stand without any external support in the non-operational configuration as well as the operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a protective element is coupled to the second support bracket at a ground contact point. The protective element reduces a contact area of the second support bracket with the ground surface and reduces wear of the second support bracket.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the hose cart includes a first side support member and a second side support member. The first side support member and the second side support member stabilize the hose cart from a first side and a second side.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the first side support member and the second side support member are pivotable between a first position associated with a non-operational configuration of the hose cart, and a second position associated with an operational configuration of the hose cart. The side support members allow the hose cart to have an efficient packaging structure in the non-operational configuration as well as a stable footprint area in the operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the non-operational configuration of the hose cart is one of a parking configuration, a storage configuration, or a transportation configuration. The first position of the second support bracket facilitates use of the hose cart in any one of the aforementioned configurations.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, an operator can shift the hose cart from the non-operational configuration to the operational configuration by pushing the second support bracket by a foot of the operator. The operator may shift the hose cart from the non-operational configuration to the operational configuration without using his hands.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a footprint area of the hose cart in the operational configuration is larger than a footprint area of the hose cart in the non-operational configuration.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the first support bracket includes a lateral extension. The lateral extension supports a set of wheels on the ground surface.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
The present invention will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which example embodiments of the invention incorporating one or more aspects of the present invention are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art. For example, one or more aspects of the present invention can be utilized in other embodiments and even other types of structures and/or methods. In the drawings, like numbers refer to like elements.

FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a hose cart 100, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The hose cart 100 may be used to carry a hose reel (not shown) while performing a gardening operation. The hose cart 100 includes a carrier frame 102. Various components and sub-parts of the hose cart 100 are attached to the carrier frame 102 at different locations on the carrier frame 102. The carrier frame 102 may have means to connect the various parts and sub-systems of the hose cart 100. The hose cart 100 has a first end 104 and a second end 106. The first end 104 and the second end 106 may interchangeably be a front and rear ends of the hose cart 100. In the illustrated embodiment, the first end 104 is a rear end and the second end 106 is a front end respectively. A guide handle 108 is attached to the carrier frame 102 towards the first end 104. The guide handle 108 may be used by an operator while using the hose cart 100 to propel the hose cart 100 in a forward/backward direction. The operator may hold the guide handle 108 and push/pull the guide handle 108 to propel the hose cart 100 accordingly as per the need of the present application. In the illustrated embodiment, the guide handle 108 is an inverted U-shaped tube. The guide handle 108 may have any other shape or size as well. In one embodiment, the guide handle 108 may be of an adjustable shape and size. The guide handle 108 may be made of a plastic material or a metal material. The guide handle 108 may have means to provide a better grip to the operator attached to the guide handle 108. The hose cart 100 further includes a hose drum 110 used for carrying the hose reel wound around the hose drum 110.
The hose drum 110 is coupled to the carrier frame 102 and is rotatable relative to the carrier frame 102. A direction of rotation of the hose drum 110 determines winding or unwinding of the hose reel from the hose drum 110. A hand lever 112 is provided with the hose drum 110 to facilitate easy rotation of the hose drum 110. The hand lever 112 may have a collapsible design such that the hand lever 112 can be stored in a folding configuration as illustrated.
Referring to FIG. 2, the hose drum 110 includes a first side member 202 and a second side member 204. The first side member 202 and the second side member 204 are generally circular in shape and are coupled to the carrier frame 102. The first side member 202 and the second side member 204 may be of any other shape as well. The first side member 202 and the second side member 204 hold a drum 206 in between coupled to the first side member 202 and the second side member 204. In the illustrated embodiment, the drum 206 has a cylindrical cross-sectional surface. The drum 206 may also have a polygonal or any other cross-sectional surface as well to suit the need of the present invention. The hand lever 112 imparts a rotational movement to the drum 206 and the hose reel winds/unwinds based on the direction of rotation of the drum 206. A hose connecting member 208 provides means to connect the hose reel with a water supply pipe (not shown). The hose connecting member 208 is a hollow cylindrical shape component having threads on both ends. The water supply pipe may have internal threads which may be connected by the threads on the hose connecting member 208. Similarly, the hose reel may also have internal threads to connect the hose reel with the hose connecting member 208. A first support bracket 210 is coupled to the carrier frame 102.
The first support bracket 210 supports the hose cart 100 on a ground surface towards the first end 104. The first support bracket 210 is a ground support member having lateral extensions 212 supporting a set of wheels 214. The lateral extensions 212 also provide a better support to balance the hose cart 100 on the ground surface. The set of wheels 214 may support the hose cart 100 on the ground surface while the hose cart 100 is tilted about the carrier frame 102 towards the first end 104. It may also be possible that the hose cart 100 is supported on the ground surface simultaneously by the set of wheels 214 as well as the lateral extensions 212 of the first support bracket 210. In one embodiment, the first support bracket 210 is only a set of wheels 214 supporting the hose cart 100 on the ground surface. The first support bracket 210 is fixedly coupled with the carrier frame 102. The first support bracket 210 may also be connected with the carrier frame 102 in any other manner as well such as a pivot joint etc. The first support bracket 210 may also be an integral part of the carrier frame 102. The carrier frame 102 may be designed so as to have an extension incorporating the first support bracket 210 supporting the hose cart 100 on the ground surface. The first support bracket 210 may have any other configuration as well to suit the need of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 3, the hose cart 100 includes a second support bracket 302. The second support bracket 302 is a generally U-shaped member supporting the hose cart 100 on the ground surface towards the second end 106. The second support bracket 302 may be a hollow tubular member or a solid tubular member. The second support bracket 302 may have any other cross-sectional shape as well to suit the need of the present invention. The second support bracket 302 has a first end portion 304, a second end portion 306, and a ground engaging portion 308. A protective element 310 is coupled to the ground engaging portion 308 of the second support bracket 302 to avoid wear of the second support bracket 302 due to contacting the ground surface. A plane A-A’ perpendicular to the ground surface and parallel to the first side member 202 and the second side member 204 of the hose drum 110 passes through the hose cart 100 and divides the hose cart 100 in a first half and a second half. It should be contemplated that the first and second halves are identical.
Structural details of the first half of the hose cart 100 are illustrated in FIG. 4. It should be contemplated that the second half of the hose cart 100 would also have the exact same structural details. The second support bracket 302 is coupled to the carrier frame 102 at the first end portion 304 through a pivot joint 402. As illustrated, the pivot joint 402 includes an arcuate slot 404 and a pivot pin 406. The pivot pin 406 couples the second support bracket 302 to the carrier frame 102. The first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302 and the carrier frame 102 may include corresponding openings to allow the pivot pin 406 to pass through so as to attach the second support bracket 302 with the carrier frame 102. A fastener (not shown) may be used to hold the pivot pin 406 in place. The second support bracket 302 is pivotable about the pivot pin 406 and moves between a first end 408 and a second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404. A first blocking element 412 and a second blocking element 414 are provided at the first end 408 and the second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404 respectively. The first blocking element 412 and second blocking element 414 limit the pivotal movement of the second support bracket 302 between the first end 408 and the second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404 respectively. It should be contemplated that the second end portion 306 of the second support bracket 302 will also have a similar arrangement to connect the second support bracket 302 at the second end portion 306 to the carrier frame 102.
Position of the first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302 at the first end 408 and second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404 define a first position and a second position of the second support bracket 302 respectively. The first position of the second support bracket 302 is defined as when the first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302 is at the first end 408 of the arcuate slot 404 and the second position of the second support bracket 302 is defined as when the first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302 is at the second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404. An operational configuration and a nonoperational configuration of the hose cart 100 are associated with the first position and the second position of the second support bracket 302 respectively. It should be contemplated that the second end portion 306 of the second support bracket 302 will have similar positions in a corresponding arcuate slot in the carrier frame 102 in the second half of the hose cart 100. FIG. 5 shows the non-operational configuration of the hose cart 100 associated with the second position of the first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302. The non-operational configuration of the hose cart 100 may be a storage configuration, a parking configuration, etc. The non-operational configuration of the hose cart 100 offers a compact configuration having a relatively lesser footprint area. In the non-operational configuration, the hose cart 100 may be easily stored as the hose cart 100 takes up minimum space in the non-operational configuration. The dimensions of the hose cart 100 are considerably reduced in the non-operational configuration helping in an efficient packaging. The hose cart 100 is stable in the non-operational configuration, and is balanced by a weight of the hose cart 100, enabling the hose cart 100 to stand without any external support. As the non-operational position of the hose cart 100 is stable, there is no requirement of any additional locking elements.
An imaginary line B-B’ perpendicular to the ground surface passes through the pivot joint 402. A point where the line B-B’ passes through the pivot joint 402 is defined as a pivot point 502 of the second support bracket 302. A ground contact point 504 of the second support bracket 302 is defined as a point or set of points on the ground engaging portion 308 of the second support bracket 302 in contact with the ground surface. The ground contact point 504 of the second support bracket 302 lies towards the hose cart 100 as compared to the pivot point 502 of the second support bracket 302 in the non-operational configuration. Therefore, a force due to the weight of the hose cart 100 acts on the second support bracket 302 so as to balance the hose cart 100 in the nonoperational position. The force acts in an outwards direction on the first end portion 304 and the second end portion 306 and in an inward direction on the ground engaging portion 308 of the second support bracket 302. As pivoting motion of the second support bracket 302 is limited by the second blocking element 414 at the second end 410 of the arcuate slot 404, the hose cart 100 remains balanced. In the storage configuration, the hose cart 100 may rest on either the lateral extensions 212 of the first support bracket 210 or the set of wheels 214. The hose cart 100 remains stable in both the alternatives.
The hose cart 100 can also be transported in the non-operational configuration from one place to another over the ground surface by tilting the hose cart 100 about the first support bracket 210. As the hose cart 100 is tilted about the first support bracket 210, the lateral extensions 212 of the first support bracket 210 are lifted above the ground surface and the set of wheels 214 contact the ground surface so that the hose cart 100 can be easily transported by rolling on the set of wheels 214 as shown in FIG. 6. The tilted configuration may be called as a transportation configuration of the hose cart 100. The transportation configuration of the hose cart 100 is also generally compact similar to the nonoperational configuration and helps in easily maneuvering the hose cart 100 on the ground surface.
The operational configuration of the hose cart 100 associated with the first position of the first end portion 304 of the second support bracket 302 is shown in FIG. 7. The operational configuration of the hose cart 100 may refer to the configuration of the hose cart 100 when the hose cart 100 is being used to wind/unwind the hose reel in a gardening operation, etc. The ground contact point 504 of the second support bracket 302 in the operational configuration lies on opposite side of the line B-B’ as compared to the hose cart 100. The force due to weight of the hose cart 100 in the operational configuration acts on the second support bracket 302 so as to balance the hose cart 100 in the operational configuration. The force acts inwards on the first end portion 304 and the second end portion 306 of the second support bracket 302 and outwards on the ground engaging portion 308 of the second support bracket 302 in the operational configuration. It should be contemplated that the lateral extensions 212 of the first support bracket 210 provide additional stability to the hose cart 100 in the operational configuration.
As the pivoting motion of the second support bracket 302 is limited by the first blocking element 412 at the first end 408 of the arcuate slot 404, the hose cart 100 remains balanced, enabling the hose cart 100 to stand without any external support in the operational configuration. As the operational configuration of the hose cart 100 is stable, there is no requirement of any additional locking elements. A centre of mass of the hose cart 100 shifts downwards in the operational configuration as compared to the non-operational configuration as a vertical level of the carrier frame 102 and associated components is generally lower in the operational configuration.
The downward shift of the centre of mass of the hose cart 100 stabilizes the hose cart 100 in the operational configuration. Thus, the hose cart 100 has a greater stability in the operational configuration making the hose cart 100 effective for a robust usage. Further, a centre of mass of the hose cart 100 shifts upwards in the first position of the second support bracket 302. The upward shift in the centre of mass of the hose cart 100 signifies a distribution of weight of the hose cart 100 in a vertical direction, therefore reducing a footprint area of the hose cart 100 in the non-operational configuration.
To switch the hose cart 100 from the non-operational configuration to the operational configuration, an operator may push the second support bracket 302 by his foot to swivel the second support bracket 302 from the first position to the second position. The operator need not use his hands to switch between the operational and the non-operational configurations, making the hose cart 100 convenient to use. FIG. 8 shows structural details of another embodiment of the present invention. The hose cart 100 includes a first side support member 802 and a second side support member 804. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may be connected to the carrier frame 102 through pivot joints. The pivot joints may be any type of a conventional pivot joint suitable to the need of the present invention. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 support the hose cart 100 on a first side 806 and a second side 808 respectively. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may be a hollow tubular member or a solid tubular member. Although, the first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 are illustrated as straight, the first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may also have any other shape as well to suit the need of the present invention. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may include ground engaging blocks to avoid wear due to contacting the ground surface. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may be pivotable between an operational and a non-operational position to provide a stable and compact configuration for the hose cart 100 respectively. The first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 provide sideways stability to the hose cart 100.
In another exemplary embodiment, the hose cart 100 may include the second support bracket 302 as well as the first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804. It should be contemplated that any other combination of the second support bracket 302 as well as the first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may be used to suit the need of the present application. Number of the second support bracket 302 and the first side support member 802 and the second side support member 804 may also vary based on application area.

Claims (15)

1. A hose cart (100) with a carrier frame (102) comprising: a guide handle (108); a hose drum (110) held in the earner frame (102), the hose drum (110) adapted to carry a hose reel wound around the hose drum (110); a first support bracket (210) attached to the carrier frame (102), the first support bracket (210) adapted to support the hose cart (100) on a ground surface from a first end (104); at least one second support bracket (302) attached to the carrier frame (102), the second support bracket (302) adapted to support the hose cart (100) on the ground surface from a second end (106); characterized in that: . the second support bracket (302) is pivotable between a first position and a second position, wherein the first position is associated with a non-operational configuration of the hose cart (100) and the second position is associated with an operational configuration of the hose cart (100) characterized in that: a ground contact point (504) of the second support bracket (302) lies towards the hose cart (100) as compared to a pivot point (502) of the • second support bracket (302) in the first position of the second support bracket (302), and wherein a weight of the hose cart (100) stabilizes the hose cart (100) in the first position and the second position of the second, support bracket (302), thereby the hose cart is able to stand without external support in the non-operational configuration as well as in the operational configuration, . the hose cart further comprises elements adapted to limit a swiveling motion of the second support bracket between the first position and the second position,
2. The hose call (100) of claim 1, wherein the non-operational configuration of the hose call (100) is one of a parking configuration, a storage configuration, or a transportation configuration.
3. The hose cart (100) of claim 1 and 2, wherein the first support bracket (210) is at least one of a set of wheels (214) and a ground support member.
4. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-3, wherein the first support bracket (210) is fixedly coupled with the carrier frame (102) of the hose cart (100).
5. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-4, wherein a centre of mass of the hose cart (100) shifts downwards in the second position of the second support bracket (302).
6. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-5, wherein a centre of mass of the hose cart (100) shifts upwards in the first position of the second support bracket (302).
7. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-6, further comprising a first blocking element (412) and a second blocking element (414) coupled to the carrier frame (102) adjacent to a pivot point (502) of the second support bracket (302), the first blocking element (412) and the second blocking element (414) adapted to limit a swiveling motion of the second support bracket (302) between the first position and the second position of die second support bracket (302).
8. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-7, wherein a pivot point (502) of the second support bracket (302) lies towards the hose cart (100) as compared to a ground contact point (504) of the second support bracket (302) in the second position of the second support bracket (302),
9. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-8, wherein a protective element (310) is coupled to the second support bracket (302) at the ground contact point (504).
10. The hose cart (100) of claim 1, wherein the hose cart (100) includes a first side support member (802) and a second side support member (804).
11. The hose cart (100) of claim 10, wherein the first side support member (802) and the second side support member (804) are pivotable between a first position associated with a non-operational configuration of the hose cart (100), and a second position associated with an operational configuration of the hose cart (100).
12. The hose cart (100) of claim 11, wherein the non-operational configuration of the hose cart (100) is one of a parking configuration, a storage configuration, or a transportation configuration.
13. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-12, wherein an operator can switch the hose cart (100) from the non-operational configuration to the operational configuration by pushing the second support bracket (302) by a foot of the operator.
14. The hose cart (100) of claim 1-12, wherein a footprint area of the hose cart (100) in the operational configuration is larger than a footprint area of the hose cart (100) in the non-operational configuration.
15. The hose cart (100) of claim 1, wherein the first support bracket (210) includes a lateral extension (212), the lateral extension (212) supporting an operation of the set of wheels (214) on the ground surface.
