Description

BRANDED PRODUCTS
The present, invention relates to branding painted and unpainted products .
In particular, although by no means exclusively, the applicant is interested in (a) pre-painted steel strip as a product and (b) products, such as roof sheeting and fence systems, made from pre-painted steel strip.
In the context of roof sheeting, the applicant is particularly, although by no means exclusively, interested in roll-formed roof sheets that include one or more than one pan, one or more than one rib, and side edge formations that allow adjacent sheets to be positioned in side by side overlapping relationship.
In the context of fence systems, the applicant is particularly, although by no means exclusively, interested in fence systems that comprise fence panels, posts and rails that are roll-formed from pre-painted steel strip.
The following discussion focuses on pre-painted steel strip and products, such as roofing systems and fence systems, made from such strip.
However, the present invention is not limited to the above-described products .
The present invention extends to products other than roofing sheets and fence systems made from prepainted steel strip.
By way of example, the present invention also extends to fence systems made from other pre-painted materials, such as aluminium and plastics materials.
The present, invention also extends to products other than pre-painted steel strip.
By way of example, the present invention extends to unpainted substrates made from metallic coated steel strip (including aluminium/zinc and zinc coated strip), aluminium, and plastics materials.
There is considerable marketing effort by manufacturers of pre-painted steel strip, such as the applicant, to develop and maintain brand recognition for key product ranges .
By way of example, the applicant makes a considerable effort to develop and maintain market recognition of COLORBOND (Registered Trade Mark) prepainted metallic coated steel strip (hereinafter referred to as "COLORBOND strip").
One consequence of the marketing activity of the applicant is that customers of products, such as fence systems, that are roll-formed from COLORBOND strip recognise that the products are high quality products at least in part because they are made from COLORBOND strip.
Another consequence of the marketing activity is that product integrity is an important issue for purchasers of products made from COLORBOND strip. For example, it is important for purchasers of roofing sheets and fence systems who have decided to purchase the products at least in part due to the reputation associated with the trade mark COLORBOND to be able to verify that the purchased products are actually made from COLORBOND strip.
There have been proposals to brand products made from pre-painted steel strip so that purchasers can verify product integrity.
However, these proposals are not entirely satisfactory.
For example, in the case of fence systems made from COLORBOND strip, the proposals either result in the brands being applied to surfaces of roll-formed steel strip that can not be readily inspected in an assembled fence or result in brands being applied to visible surfaces with the result that the brands are a dominant part of an assembled fence and are unsightly. Similar considerations apply in relation to roofing sheets and other products made from pre-painted steel strip.
The present invention is based on the realisation that an improved brand can be formed on pre-painted steel (including metallic coated steel) strip by partially removing a section of the paint layer on the substrate.
The present invention is also based on the realisation that an improved brand can be formed on painted surfaces on any painted substrate, including substrates made from pre-painted steel (including metallic coated steel) strip, and also including substrates made from other materials, by partially removing a section of the paint layer on the substrate.
The term "layer" is understood herein to include a single layer and a layer that has multiple layers such as a primer and a top coat.
In particular, the applicant has found that partially removing a section of a paint layer on a painted substrate, such as substrates made from steel, aluminium, or plastics, produces a brand that is visible but not sharply cont.rast.ing in colour and visually dominant, as is the case with brands that are painted onto an existing paint layer on a substrate.
The present invention is also based on the realisation that an improved brand can be formed directly on selected unpainted substrates, such as unpainted substrates formed from metallic coated steel strip (including aluminium/zinc and zinc coated steel strip), aluminium, and plastics materials, by partially removing a section of the substrates.
Thus, in overall terms, the present invention makes it possible for a purchaser to verify easily that a product such as a roofing sheet or a fence system, is a genuine product without having a brand that is a dominant part of the product.
The present invention is also based on the realisation that a laser is a very effective option for partially removing a section of a paint layer or a substrate and forming a brand.
According to the present invention there is provided a pre-painted steel strip that includes a plurality of brands at spaced intervals along the length of the steel strip, with each brand being defined by a section or sections of a paint layer on the steel strip from which the paint has been partially removed, and wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of un-branded steel strip.
In one embodiment the brand is formed by partially removing sections of the paint layer with a laser.
Typically, the paint layer on the steel strip is up to 25 micron, more typically 20-25 micron.
The brand or brands may be formed by any suitable means .
One such means is a laser system.
The laser system may be any suitable laser system.
One suitable laser system is a Solariet HD 55W laser system.
According to the present invention there is also provided a roof sheet or a fence system made from a prepainted steel strip that includes a plurality of brands that are defined by sections of a paint layer on the steel strip from which the paint has been partially removed in locations that are visible to a purchaser of the roof sheet or the fence system, and wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of un-branded steel strip.
In one embodiment the brands are formed by partially removing the paint layer with a laser.
In a situation in which the product is a roofing sheet, preferably the brands are on locations that are visible to a purchaser inspecting the roof sheet prior to installating on a roof or an assembled roof.
In a situation in which the product is a fence system that includes a plurality of fence panels, posts, and rails, preferably the brands are on any one or more than one of the fence panels, posts and rails in a location or locations that are visible to a purchaser inspecting an assembled fence.
According to the present invention there is also provided a method of manufacturing a pre-painted steel strip that includes the steps of (a) partially removing sections of a paint layer on the strip and forming a plurality of brands at spaced intervals along the length of the strip, wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of un-branded strip and (b) thereafter coiling the strip.
In one embodiment the method includes forming the brands using a laser that partially removes sections of the paint layer.
The applicant has found that a laser is an effective option for partially removing the paint layer from a pre-painted steel strip in a line for manufacturing pre-painted steel strip.
According to the present invention there is also provided a method of manufacturing a pre-painted steel (including metallic coated steel) strip product on a roll forming line that includes a step of roll forming the above-described branded pre-painted steel strip and forming the product with the brands visible to a purchaser but not a dominant part of the product.
The product may be any suitable product.
By way of example, the product may be a roofing sheet or a fence system.
According to the present invention there is also provided a method of manufacturing a pre-painted steel (including metallic coated steel) strip product on a roll forming line that includes steps of (a) uncoiling unbranded pre-painted steel strip from a coil, (b) roll forming the strip and forming the product, and (c) shearing the roll-formed strip into a plurality of pieces, and further includes the step of partially removing sections of a paint layer of the roll-formed sheets and forming brands that are visible but not a dominant part of the product.
The product may be any suitable product.
By way of example, the product may be a roofing sheet or a fence system.
According to the present invention there is also provided an unpainted steel strip that includes a plurality of brands at spaced intervals along the length of the steel strip, with each brand being defined by a section or sections of a surface of the steel strip that has been partially removed, and wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of un-branded steel strip.
The brands may be formed by any suitable means.
One such means is a laser system.
The laser system may be any suitable laser system.
According to the present invention there is also provided a product made from an unpainted steel strip that includes a plurality of brands that are defined by sections of a surface of the steel strip that have been partially removed in locations that are visible to a purchaser, and wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of unbranded product.
The product may be any suitable product.
By way of example, the product may be a roofing sheet or a fence system.
According to the present invention there is also provided a method of manufacturing an unpainted steel strip that includes a step of partially removing sections of a surface of the steel strip and forming a plurality of brands on the steel strip, wherein the size of each brand is relatively small compared to the surrounding area of un-branded steel strip.
In one embodiment the method includes forming the brands using a laser that partially removes sections of the surface of the steel strip.
The present invention is described further by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a section of fence system made from pre-painted steel strip that includes a plurality of brands in accordance with the present invention.
The fence 10 shown in the drawing is a metal fence.
The fence 10 includes a plurality of spaced apart fence posts 11 embedded in concrete in the ground.
In effect, the fence posts 11 divide the fence 10 into a plurality of fence sections 12 between adjacent posts .
The fence 10 includes upper and lower rigid rails 13, 14, respectively, and infill panels 15 extending between and received and supported by the rails. There are 3 such infill panels 15 in the complete fence section 12 shown in the drawing.
The infill panels 15 are roll-formed from painted profiled steel sheet. The panels may be formed from any other suitable sheet material, as will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The infill panels 15 are branded as shown in the drawing with the word "COLORBOND" to identify that the panels are made form COLORBOND strip. The brands are formed in the front painted surfaces of the panels 15 and are sufficiently visible to persons looking at the fence 10. The brand is marked on the panels 15 by means of a laser that selectively removes a controllable amount of the paint coating on the panels and thereby producing sufficient visual differentiation to read a branded message. The result is a brand that is visible but not sharply contrasting in colour and visually dominant, as is the case with brands that are painted onto an existing paint layer
The fence posts 11 are formed as channel sections that define recesses adapted to receive and support ends of the rails 13, 14 and edges of adjacent infill panels 15. The fence posts 11 are formed from painted profiled steel sheet.
The upper and lower rails, 13, 14 are similarly formed as channel sections. Each rail 13, 14 defines a recess 16 that is designed to receive a respective upper or lower edge, respectively, of the infill panels 15. In this way, the infill panels 15 are supported by the rails 13, 14. The rails 13, 14 are formed from painted profiled steel sheet.
If required, the fence posts 11 and the rails 13, 14 may be separately branded by removing paint, from the posts and rails .
Many modifications may be made to the present invention as described above without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
By way of example, whilst the above-described embodiment is a fence system made from pre-painted steel strip, the present invention is not so limited and extends to (a) other products such as roofing sheets made from pre-painted steel strip, (b) other painted substrates, (c) fence systems and other products made from such other painted substrates, (d) unpainted substrates, and (e) fence systems and other products made from such other unpainted substrates .
