Abstract
A computer-implemented process for processing ticketless travel transactions including determining, by one or more processors, that a first travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket, receiving, via a network interface from said travel provider, a virtual travel transaction associated with a traveller, the virtual travel transaction including a reservation with the first travel provider for travel along a travel segment, generating, by the one or more processors, an electronic reservation record for a traveler without issuing any electronic or physical ticket, the electronic reservation record being associated with the virtual travel transaction requesting, by one or more processors, a virtual ticket identifier associated with the travel segment from a global distribution system (GDS), the virtual ticket identifier being unassociated with any electronic or physical ticket, but being accounted for in a substantially similar manner as an electronic ticket or a physical ticket, and providing exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, that the first travel provider has reserved a seat on one or more first travel conveyances for one or more dates specified in the electronic reservation record, receiving, via a network interface, the virtual ticket identifier, adding, by one or more processors, the virtual ticket identifier to a field of the electronic reservation record, determining, by one or more processors, that a second travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket, receiving, via a network interface, a rebooking request from the first travel provider to modify the electronic reservation record based on rebooking of the travel segment from the first travel provider to the second travel provider, modifying, by one or more processors, the electronic reservation record based on the rebooking request to provide a modified electronic reservation record including the virtual ticket identifier and reservation with the second travel provider for travel along the travel segment, and digitally transmitting, via a network interface, the modified electronic reservation record having the virtual ticket identifier to a remote computing system that uses the virtual ticket identifier included in the modified electronic reservation record as exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, that the reservation has been confirmed for the traveler by the first travel provider and as proof of a commitment to compensate the second travel provider for servicing the traveler, allowing the second travel provider to fulfil the travel segment on a second travel conveyance and receive compensation for the travel segment without requesting control of any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, and improving processing of the modified electronic reservation record performed at the remote computing system by eliminating duplicate information provided in an electronic or a physical ticket, providing, by the one or more processors, instructions to transport the traveler on the second travel conveyance to fulfill the travel segment, and receiving, by the one or more processors, the compensation from the traveler as a payment for the travel segment.

BACKGROUND
[0003] Some current airline systems use electronic or paper tickets in conjunction with reservation records to complete travel transactions. For 10 example, if a first airline system cancels a flight for a passenger and rebooks the passenger on a second airline system, the first airline system transmits the reservation record and some evidence associated with an electronic or paper ticket record that serves as proof that the second airline system will be compensated for serving the rebooked passenger. 15 [0004] In the case of electronic tickets (e-tickets), the first airline system can transmit a series of messages associated with an e-ticket record stored in a database. The messages can include authorizations permitting the second airline system to assume control of the e-ticket or coupons and information associated with a coupon status of the e-ticket. Some of the information associated with the 20 e-ticket messages can be duplicative of information stored in the reservation record associated with the e-ticket. However, both the e-ticket information as well as the reservation record is transmitted from the first airline system to the second airline system to document during the travel transaction.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0019] This document describes systems and techniques for processing virtual tickets, or ticketless transactions, used by entities, such as airlines. FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an exemplary system 100 for processing virtual tickets. The system 100 includes an airline system 102 that supports ticketless transactions and a global distribution system (GDS) 104 that manages, inter alia, flight schedule information for airlines. The system 100 also includes a system for purchasing tickets, or passenger seats, such as a travel agency system 106, and can include a clearinghouse system 108, which may serve as a broker between the travel agency system 106 and the airline system 102 to facilitate payment to the airline for flights purchased at the travel agency system 106.
[0020] In certain implementations, and the ticketless airline system 102, as well as other airline systems, can submit airline schedule files, such as SSIM files, to an aggregator, such as the Official Airline Guide (OAG), or directly to the GDS 104. The latter case is illustrated by arrow 109. The schedule files transmitted by the ticketless airline system 102 can include a ticketless value "V," which indicates that an associated flight is eligible for virtual ticketing.

The agent can also add names and other booking data to a reservation record 112 (e.g., a passenger name record) associated with the desired flight. The format of a reservation record for a flight eligible for virtual ticketing can be implemented so that it appears substantially similar to reservation records for other ticket types (e.g., paper or e-ticket reservation records).

[0033] Using the system components of FIG. 1, a travel provider can accomplish the cancellation and rebooking by modifying a travel record, or reservation record, that includes a virtual ticket value and transmitting the modified travel record to the new travel provider. For example, NORTHWEST AIRLINES can modify a reservation record for Mr. Traveler by, for example, cancelling Mr. Traveler’s reservation on a Northwest Airline’s flight and rebooking him on an American Airline’s flight. After modifying the reservation record, Northwest Airline can transmit the modified reservation record to AMERICAN AIRLINES.

Claims (3)
1. A computer-implemented process for processing trave transactions without tickets, including: generating an electronic reservation record for a traveler that includes a reservation for travel along a travel segment; modifying the electronic reservation record to include a virtual ticket value that is unassociated with an electronic or physical ticket; digitally transmitting the electronic reservation record having the virtual ticket value to a remote computing system that uses the electronic reservation record as exclusive evidence that the reservation has been confirmed for the traveler by a travel provider, wherein the use of the electronic reservation record is exclusive of the presence or absence of any electronic or physical tickets.

A computer-implemented process for processing lickelless travel transactions including: determining, by one or more processors, that a first travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; receiving, via a network interface from said travel provider, a virtual travel transaction associated with a traveller, the virtual travel transaction including a reservation with the first travel provider for travel along a travel segment; generating, by the one or more processors, an electronic reservation record for a traveler without issuing any electronic or physical ticket, the electronic reservation record being associated with the virtual travel transaction requesting, by one or more processors, a virtual ticket identifier associated with the travel segment from a global distribution system (GDS), the virtual ticket identifier being unassociated with any electronic or physical ticket, but being accounted for in a substantially similar manner as an electronic ticket or a physical ticket, and providing exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, that the first travel provider has reserved a seat on one or more first travel conveyances for one or more dates specified in the electronic reservation record; receiving, via a network interface, the virtual ticket identifier; adding, by one or more processors, the virtual ticket identifier to a field of the electronic reservation record; determining, by one or more processors, that a second travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; receiving, via a network interface, a rebooking request from the first travel provider to modify the electronic reservation record based on rebooking of the travel segment from the first travel provider to the second travel provider; modifying, by one or more processors, the electronic reservation record based on the rebooking request to provide a modified electronic reservation record including the virtual ticket identifier and reservation with the second travel provider for travel along the travel segment; and digitally transmitting, via a network interface, the modified electronic reservation record having the virtual ticket identifier to a remote computing system that uses the virtual ticket identifier included in the modified electronic reservation record as exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, that the reservation has been confirmed for the traveler by the first travel provider and as proof of a commitment to compensate the second travel provider for servicing the traveler, allowing the second travel provider to fulfil the travel segment on a second travel conveyance and receive compensation for the travel segment without requesting control of any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, and improving processing of the modified electronic reservation record performed at the remote computing system by eliminating duplicate information provided in an electronic or a physical ticket; providing, by the one or more processors, instructions to transport the traveler on the second travel conveyance to fulfill the travel segment; and receiving, by the one or more processors, the compensation from the traveler as a payment for the travel segment.
2. A computer-implemented process of digitally processing travel changes between travel providers, the process including: digitally modifying an electronic passenger name record (PNR) with travel information that has changed, the electronic PNR including a requested travel itinerary and a virtual ticket value associated with a first segment of travel; and digitally transmitting the electronic PNR having the virtual ticket value from a first travel provider system to a second travel provider for use in setting the travel itinerary and for providing exclusive evidence of a commitment to compensate the second travel provider for providing the first segment of travel to a passenger associated with the electronic PNR.
2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the electronic reservation record is generated by a system selected from a group including an airline reservation system, a cruise ship reservation system, a passenger rail reservation system and a tour reservation system.
3. A process according to either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein a travel agency system generates the electronic reservation record.
4. A process according to claim 3, wherein the travel agency system requests the virtual ticket identifier associated with the travel segment from the global distribution system.
5. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 4, further including digitally transmitting the electronic reservation record to a remote computing system provided as a clearinghouse that uses the virtual ticket identifier included in the electronic reservation record as exclusive evidence that the reservation has been confirmed, and that initiates a settlement process for the second travel provider that fulfilled the travel along the travel segment.
6. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the second travel provider transmits to the remote computing system a settlement request that includes the modified electronic reservation record as the exclusive evidence that the second travel provider has confirmed the reserved travel for the traveler.
7. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the electronic reservation record includes a second travel segment that is associated with an electronic ticket identifier that identifies a particular electronic ticket.
8. A process according to claim 7, further including transmitting information associated with the particular electronic ticket along with the electronic reservation record as evidence that the second travel segment has been confirmed.
9. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the remote computing system uses the virtual ticket identifier in a substantially similar manner as the remote computing system uses electronic ticket identifiers and physical ticket identifiers in accounting and transaction records.
10. A process according to any one of the preceding claims, further including receiving a schedule, the schedule indicating one or more travel segments that are eligible to be processed with virtual travel transactions, wherein the electronic reservation record corresponds to a travel segment of the one or more travel segments.
11. A process according to claim 10, wherein the schedule is provided by a ticketless system.
12. A computer-implemented process for digitally processing travel changes between travel providers in ticketless travel transactions including: determining, by one or more processors, that a first travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; determining, by one or more processors, that a travel segment is eligible to be processed with a virtual travel transaction without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; receiving, via a network interface, from said first travel provider a virtual travel transaction associated with a traveller, the virtual travel transaction including a reservation with the first travel provider for travel along a travel segment and a requested travel itinerary; generating, by one or more processors, an electronic passenger name record (PNR) for the traveler without issuing any electronic or physical ticket, the electronic PNR being associated with the virtual travel transaction; requesting, by one or more processors, a virtual ticket identifier associated with the travel segment from a global distribution system (GDS), the virtual ticket identifier being unassociated with any electronic or physical ticket, but being accounted for in a substantially similar manner as an electronic ticket or a physical ticket, and providing exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, that the first travel provider has reserved a seat on one or more first travel conveyances for one or more dates specified in the electronic PNR; receiving, via a network interface, the virtual ticket identifier; adding, by one or more processors, the virtual ticket identifier to a field of the electronic PNR; determining, by one or more processors, that a second travel provider is a travel provider that permits processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; receiving, via a network interface, a rebooking request from the first travel provider to modify the PNR based on rebooking of the travel segment from the first travel provider to the second travel provider; digitally modifying, by the one or more processors, the electronic PNR based on the rebooking request to provide a modified electronic PNR including the virtual ticket identifier and a reservation with the second travel provider for travel along the travel segment; and digitally transmitting, via a network interface, the modified electronic PNR having the virtual ticket identifier from the first travel provider to a remote computing system associated with the second travel provider for use in settling the requested travel itinerary, and the virtual ticket identifier for providing exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, that the reservation has been confirmed for the traveler by the first travel provider and as proof of a commitment to compensate the second travel provider for servicing the traveler, allowing the second traveler provider to fulfil the travel segment and receive compensation for the travel segment on a second travel conveyance without requesting control of any information associated with an electronic or physical ticket, and improving processing of the modified electronic reservation record performed at the remote computing system by eliminating duplicate information provided in an electronic or a physical ticket; providing, by the one or more processors, instructions to transport the traveler on the second travel conveyance to fulfill the travel segment; and receiving, by the one or more processors, the compensation from the traveler as a payment for the travel segment.
13. A process according to claim 12, wherein the commitment to compensate is between the first and second travel providers.
14. A process according to either claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the commitment to compensate is between the passenger and the second travel provider.
15. A process according to any one of claims 12 to 14, wherein the commitment to compensate is between a travel agency and the second travel provider.
16. A process according to any one of claims 12 to 15, wherein the commitment to compensate is between a clearinghouse and the second travel provider.
17. A process according to any one of claims 12 to 16, wherein the travel segment is not associated with an electronic or physical ticket.
18. A system for processing ticketless travel transactions including: a travel agency system that performs, by one or more processors, operations including: determining that first and second travel providers are travel providers that permit processing of virtual travel transactions without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; deteimining that a travel segment is eligible to be processed with a virtual travel transaction without issuance of any electronic or physical ticket; receiving, via a network interface from said first travel provider, a virtual travel transaction associated with a traveller, the virtual travel transaction including a reservation with the first travel provider for travel along a travel segment; generating an electronic reservation record for the traveler without issuing any electronic or physical ticket, the electronic reservation record being associated with the virtual travel transaction; requesting, from a global distribution system (GDS), a virtual ticket identifier associated with the travel segment, the virtual ticket identifier being unassociated with any electronic or physical ticket, but being accounted for in a substantially similar manner as an electronic ticket or a physical ticket, and providing exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, that the first travel provider has reserved a seat on one or more first travel conveyances for one or more dates specified in the electronic reservation record; receiving, via a network interface, the virtual ticket identifier; adding the virtual ticket identifier to a field of the electronic reservation record; a travel provider system that performs, by one or more processors, operations including: receiving, via a network interface, the electronic reservation record having the virtual ticket identifier to provide travel for the traveler along the travel segment without receiving any electronic or physical tickets associated with the travel segment; receiving, via a network interface, a rebooking request from the first travel provider to modify the electronic reservation record based on rebooking of the travel segment from the first travel provider to the second travel provider; digitally modifying the electronic reservation record based on the rebooking request to provide a modified electronic reservation record including the virtual ticket identifier and a reservation with the second travel provider for travel along the travel segment; and providing instructions for the second travel provider to transport the traveller on a second travel conveyance; a clearinghouse system that performs, by the one or more processors, operations including: receiving, the virtual ticket identifier as exclusive evidence, absent any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, that the reservation has been confirmed for the traveler by the first travel provider and as proof of a commitment to compensate the second travel provider for servicing the traveler, allowing the second travel provider to fulfil the travel segment on the second travel conveyance and receive compensation for the travel segment without requesting control of any information associated with an electronic or a physical ticket, and improving processing of the modified electronic reservation record performed at a remote computing system associated with the second travel provider by eliminating duplicate information provided in an electronic or a physical ticket, and receiving the compensation from the traveler as a payment for the travel segment.
19. A system according to claim 18, wherein the global distribution system (GDS) receives digital travel schedules from travel provider systems that indicate travel segments that are associated with virtual ticket identifiers.
20. A system according to claim 19, wherein the travel agency system requests the travel segments associated with the virtual ticket identifiers from the GDS.
21. A system according to claim 20, wherein the travel agency system requests the travel segments associated with virtual transaction values from the GDS.
3. A system for processing ticketless travel transactions including: a travel agency system to generate an electronic travel reservation record having a travel segment associated with a virtual ticket value but un-associated with an electronic or physical ticket; a travel provider system to receive the electronic travel reservation record having the virtual ticket value and to provide travel for a passenger along the travel segment without receiving any electronic or phy sical tickets associated with the travel segment; and a clearinghouse system to receive the virtual ticket value from the travel provider as exclusive evidence that the travel provider has committed to provide the travel along the travel segment.
