Trailer Breakaway Battery Low Voltage Warning Device
I Field of the Invention
This invention relates to electrical sensing timer audible and visual warning device assembly for a trailer breakaway battery low voltage monitoring system.
Particularly this invention relates to sensing a low battery voltage in a battery that is installed on a trailer that supplies electrical power to operate the trailers wheel braking magnets.
2 Background of invention
There are many types of trailer breakaway battery systems on the market today, that are fitted to all types of trailers, with a carrying capacity of two (2) tonnes and over as required for the Australian Standards referring to RTA inspection bulletin number 06 1998 and number 6 2007.
The breakaway battery is installed on the trailer and the trailers breakaway battery is constantly charged by a electrical source from the towing or hauling vehicle when joined or connected together which complies with the above RTA standards.
When accidental separation of the trailer from the towing or hauling vehicle occurs, the trailer has an electrical switch installed on the front of the draw bar of the trailer, the switch is connected to the trailers breakaway battery and the trailers braking coil magnets. This switch has a centre insulated pin that separates the breakaway battery power source from the trailers braking coil magnets.
The opposite side of the switch is electrically connected to the trailer wheel magnets which are electrically operated from the vehicles electric trailer brake control unit when the trailer is attached and electrically connected to the vehicle.
Attached to one end of the switch centre insulated pin is a permanently fixed flexible wire cable, the other end of the flexible wire cable is attached to the hauling or drawing vehicle, when accidental separation occurs and the trailer pulls away from the hauling or drawing vehicle, the flexible wire cable which is attached to the vehicle will pull out the switch pin on
Inventor: Dennis Ronald Joseph Gravolin Draft Application 11 November 2016 the trailer break away switch, and closes the switch contacts. The trailers break away battery will be activated and supply electrical power to the trailers braking wheel magnets and in turn assists to slow down the trailers movements.
Most of the breakaway battery systems have a battery and a voltage indicator installed in the breakaway battery box. There are also audible and visual warning devices required by the RTA that will indicate that the breakaway battery is being charged by the towing or hauling vehicle.
However our research has found that when testing the trailer breakaway battery system, there is no visual or audible low battery coil wheel magnets warning devices on the market today. When testing the trailers breakaway battery, the operator pulls the centre pin out of the breakaway switch and there is no indication that the breakaway battery is in circuit with the wheel braking magnets on the trailer, The only way to check the trailer braking system is in circuit is, to physically manually turn each of the the trailer wheels to test the brake wheel magnets to operate the trailers brakes, or when the trailer is joined to the towing vehicle, the driver tries to tow the trailer by the hauling vehicle to test the trailers braking system on the trailer.
Also with further research, I have found that some of the operators when testing as indicated above, do not push the insulated centre pin of the breakaway switch in correctly insitu and therefore this action does not enable the separation of the breakaway switch contacts and they remain closed, which will in turn cause overheating of the brake wheel magnets and will discharge or damage the breakaway battery's energy source.
All wheel braking magnets electrical connections are connected in parallel and through my research I have found that at least one wheel braking magnet on many trailers has been found to be open circuit. The electrical connection being connected in parallel makes it difficult for the operator to determine which wheel braking magnet is open circuit.
My invention relates to electrical sensing timer audible and visual warning Device assembly for a trailer breakaway battery low voltage monitoring systems, which can be electrically connected in series on each trailer electrical wheel braking magnets which when the breakaway switch is pulled out to test the trailers breakaway battery system each wheel braking magnet will have its own visual or audible sound.
Inventor: Dennis Ronald Joseph Gravolin Draft Application 11 November 2016
Further to my invention the Trailer Breakaway Battery Low Voltage Warning Device, is electrically connected in series between the trailers breakaway battery and the trailers breakaway switch, which when pulled out the Trailer Breakaway Battery Low Voltage Warning Device activates, the peizo buzzer will sound when battery current is present, however if the battery voltage is low the Green LED light source will not illuminate, which indicates to the operator that the trailer breakaway battery is low on amp hours.
The purpose of the visual light source monitor located within the housing electrically connected to the PCB circuit, and the visual light source monitor in its own housing which can be mounted on the side of the trailer or in the hauling vehicle, is to enable the operator to visually view the trailer breakaway battery current amp hour load or charge voltage capacity.
Furthermore to my invention there is a low battery audible alarm that will switch on automatically and sound off intermittently when the breakaway battery has fallen to a low level of charge.
3 Summary of the invention
According to the first aspect of the invention there is provided a low battery warning device assembly for a trailer including an audible and visual low voltage sensing warning device.
The housing may be of different shapes.
Wherein the housing the PCB is shaped to be received in the housing that receives connection for electrical cable entry.
The housing electrical wiring leads extend from the housing.
A coil that allows electrons to flow, a magnetic reed switch, a peizo buzzer which produces audible communications and a printed circuit board incorporating Zener diodes, resistors, transistors, a timer and light emitting diodes which creates a visual light source, all of which is located within a housing.
A visual light source is located within the housing connected to the PCB circuit. The visual light source can be installed in its own housing separated from the PCB and its housing, and the visual light source can be mounted on the side of the trailer or in the hauling vehicle.

7 and pushed together by two coil springs 10. 12V battery, 13 positive power source to breakaway switch contacts 7 from break away switch contacts 7 to a specially wound copper coil 15 in series with the supply positive from the 12V battery 13. The copper coil in series connect to four wheel magnetic coils 14 and have a return amp - hour load to the negative of the 12V battery 13. When the load of magnetic electrons flow through the copper coil 14 the reed switch 16 will close its contacts and supply positive power and switch on buzzer 22. The circuit of flexible monitor 11 with wire cables connected to the positive side of the 12V battery 13 in the monitors cable 11 has a resistor 19, a zener diode 20 and a LED 21 showing in the on state. The zener diode 20 switches on and off the LED at 10.5V. When the voltage is above 10.5V the LED 21 will switch on indicating that the break away battery is full.
The user when pulling out the insulated pin 8 will immediately look at the monitor and hear the buzzer 22 on. This will enable the user to have reassurance that the wheel magnet 14 are electrically connected and the break away battery 13 under load will hold its amp-hour. When the user pushes the pin 8 into the breakaway switch 14 the audible alarm buzzer 22 will switch off due no supply current to the coil magnets 14 which will in turn copper coil 15 will have no current flow to magnetically activate the reed switch figure 16 to switch on.
The 12V monitor 11 LED 21 will stay on indicating that the break away battery 13 has a good charge capacity at 12V by a visual indication. Also if the monitor 11 LED 21 switches off the user will know by visual indication that the break away battery 13 is low on amp hour and when the break away battery 13 is charged the monitor 11 LED 21 will switch on indicating to the user that the break away battery system is safe to use.
