Description
EDITORIAL NOTE 2016100333 There are two pages of description only DESCRIPTION OF DEVICE The 'JIMMI-JACK' is a telescopic jack powered by a conventional Tie-down Ratchet mechanism and webbing. It uses the tension generated from the Tie-down Ratchet to extend a telescoping tube. It also uses a 2:1 mechanical advantage system to extend the tube with almost twice the power of the ratchet mechanism itself. A jacking force upwards of 800kg can be quickly and easily generated by a standard 50mm webbing and Tie down Ratchet. The 'JIMMI-JACK' has many advantages including; * Fast adjustment to a desired operating length * Fast engagement of the ratchet mechanism * Fast ratchet operation * Fast release of the ratchet mechanism * Ease of use * Strong mechanism construction * Durable webbing * Very low maintenance CONSTRUCTION * External Tube- The Tie-down ratchet body is mounted in a way that provides full range of movement, to one end of a rectangular hollow section (RHS) of appropriate size and length. It must be directionally suited so the webbing TO BE tensioned extends towards the opposing end of the tube. * Internal Tube- Also made from rectangular hollow section (RHS). Must have sufficient clearance to allow the webbing to run between the tubes. This clearance is kept by the use of nylon slide plates fitted to both tubes. * Guided roller- (to locate webbing) Mounted centrally to one end of the internal tube -provides a low friction way of re-directing the webbing 180 degrees back to a fixed point. * The webbing enters a slot of appropriate size near the ratchet body and runs internally between the external and internal tubes, to a guided roller at the opposing end of the internal tube. The webbing then changes direction 180 degrees by running around this roller and returns through an exit slot (opposite the entry slot) to a fixed point opposite the ratchet body. * The lengths of the jack tubes are relative to the total webbing length, therefore there is a huge range in length that the jack can be built to. * Attachments can be fitted to each end of the device. There is an attachment which allows jacking to dimensions smaller than the length of the jack (see attachment #1 drawing). There is also an attachment to allow extension by other means e.g. a length of timber or pipe (see attachment #2 drawing). With this in mind the JIMMI-JACK can be a very versatile device.
METHOD OF OPERATION * As required, the total length of the jack can be adjusted to suit the task at hand. This can be achieved by manually extending the inner tube (before ratchet engagement), by simply drawing through any excess webbing until both ends of the jack come up against the job. The ratchet can now be engaged in this position, thus maximising the usable jacking stroke. * As the ratchet is operated, the tensioned webbing shortens thus extending the internal tube at a potential force of approximately twice (minus bearing friction) that of the ratchet mechanism itself. (2:1 mechanical advantage). * The length of the jacking stroke is determined by the maximum capacity of webbing able to fit on the ratchet spool at a ratio of half. Therefore if 300mm of webbing can be drawn onto the ratchet body, the stroke of the jack will be around 150mm. * As there is no control over the load when the ratchet mechanism is released the load must either be supported, braced or removed altogether. * After the ratchet is released following the jacking stroke, the inner tube can be returned to the start position by manually pushing the tube in and allowing the webbing to slide freely back through the ratchet mechanism.
