Abstract

A hand held and or resting device incorporating LED or other light emitting technology for use as a temporary measure to communicate or enhance communication of an instruction or warning to road users.

Description

1 ILLUMINATING WARNING BAT OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY; ROAD SAFETY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present invention relates to the method and/or device used as a temporary measure to communicate to road users and in particular the driver of an approaching vehicle an instruction or warning that they are to proceed on the road in some particular manner and or slow down or to stop their vehicle. One such method and device currently in use is a hand held bat (comprising a display part and a handle part) that incorporates a reflective surface painted or stuck onto or otherwise affixed to the display part so as to enhance its function of communicating to road users and or to achieve effective communication to road users in certain circumstances. The reflective surface communicates or enhances communication of the instruction or warning to road users such as the driver of an approaching vehicle by reflecting a light source, for example, the headlights of an approaching vehicle. There are problems and shortcomings with such a method and device which the present invention overcomes. [0002] Problems and shortcomings with the current hand held warning bat that incorporates a reflective surface: In ordinary use, including in the process of transportation to and from places where it is to be used, the reflective surface commonly and readily becomes scratched, chipped, bent, faded or covered in mud dust and suchlike causing its communication function and hence instruction and warning functions to be reduced. For the reflective surface to convey a warning signal at night or in conditions of poor visibility such as rain and fog commonly depends on the headlights of an approaching vehicle being switched on and directed towards the display part of the handheld bat. A vehicle's headlights may be switched off or not working properly and/or mis-angled relative to the reflective surface thus reducing or preventing the reflective surface performing its intended function. The reflective surface produces a relatively low level of illumination over a relatively short distance. Thus the driver of an approaching 2 vehicle may not have their attention drawn to the warning bat adequately in advance to safely respond to the instruction or warning it is intended to provide. [0003] The hand held bat as a temporary measure to communicate to road users has many advantages - it is relatively inexpensive, fairly small and lightweight thus easily transported, very simple to operate and easily repositioned. In many circumstances it is the most appropriate means of communicating an instruction or warning to road users. However its reliance on reflective surface technology significantly limits its efficacy as a means of communicating an instruction or warning to road users thereby endangering road workers and road users. SUMMARY OF INVENTION [0004] The existing hand held warning bat uses reflective surface technology to perform or enhance performance of its intended function of communicating an instruction or warning to road users so as to safeguard road workers and users. The problems with the existing hand held warning bat are that the reflective surface easily breaks down or otherwise fails to function as a signal emitter to its maximum potential and in any event has relatively low signal emitter capacity, that is, relatively low communication strength and range. Thus the bat may fail to provide an effective warning thereby endangering road workers and road users. [0005] The present invention is for an improved warning bat that has incorporated in the bat LED or other light emitting technology and a power source for the light emitting technology and such other components as may be necessary for the light emitting technology to emit a particular instruction or warning for road users. The improved warning bat has two elements, a display element and a positioning element, for example a handle. The display element consists of a flat "head" of suitable material that holds in place a set of LED or other light emitting technology in whatever configuration on one or both sides of it. The "head" and or positioning element incorporates a power source and switching capability such that particular subsets of the LED or other light emitting 3 technology can be activated so as to be continuously lit or flashing intermittently. The positioning element protrudes from or is attached to or comprised in the display element such that a person can comfortably hold the device (with or without resting it on the ground or other surface) so as to present the "head" to an approaching vehicle or other desired place or object without impeding the signal emitted by the light emitter/s. [0006] Compared to the existing warning bat, the improved warning bat using LED or other light emitting technology to communicate the instruction or warning signal is more robust and reliable, performs to its full signalling capacity independently of external factors and produces a significantly stronger light signal that attracts attention to it thus providing a more effective and timely warning signal and thereby a significant improvement in safety for road workers and road users. DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0007] The preferred embodiment is similar in shape and dimensions to the warning bat currently in use and is constructed out of plastic or other lightweight durable and weather resistant material. The LED or other light emitting technology is incorporated in the head of the bat and is so configured there that by use of a switching or control capability different subsets of the LED or other light emitters can be switched on or activated so as to be continuously lit or flash intermittently. A spare battery and a battery level indicator are incorporated in the bat.

Claims (2)

1. A temporary warning bat that incorporates LED or other light emitting technology to communicate or enhance the communication of the instruction or warning to road users that the bat is intended to provide.
2. A warning bat according to claim 1 which uses one or more batteries as the power source for the LED or other light emitting technology and incorporates housing for replacement batteries to be stored in the device.
