Description
A LAUNDRY WASHING AND DRYING MACHINE COMPRISING AN AIR-COOLED CONDENSER
[0001] The present invention relates to a laundry washing and drying machine comprising an air-cooled condenser.
[0002] In laundry washing and drying machines, in the drying process after washing, the use of air-cooled condensers which realize the condensation process by being cooled with the outside environment air is known. The humid air that comes from over the laundry and passes through the processing air duct is condensed in the condenser cooled by means of the outside environment air, thus the air that is dried by being dehumidified is delivered again onto the laundry through the processing air duct. The condenser is placed vertically at the rear side or horizontally at the upper side of the washing tub so that water and foam are not collected therein during the washing process. In the air-cooled condensers, the cold air circulation providing condensation is open looped, the cooling air received from the outside environment is passed through the condenser and discharged to the outside environment again. In the situation the laundry washing and drying machine is placed under the counter or inside a cabinet, the fronts of the air inlets and outlets are closed and realizing the cooling air cycle becomes difficult. The cooling air duct, through which the cooling air passes, is designed with curved configuration due to the tub, the motor and other components contained inside the machine body and the path traversed inside the body by the cooling air increases. The cooling air heats up since the path traversed inside the body prior to and after the condenser is long and curved, the friction in the cooling air duct increases and loss in the pressure and flow rate occurs, thereby laundry drying efficiency decreases since the condenser cannot be cooled sufficiently.
[0003] The United States Patent No. US4489507 relates to a drying apparatus comprising an air-cooled heat exchanger.
[0004] In the European Patent Application No. EP0254018, a laundry drying machine is explained wherein the condenser is mounted in the upper part 2 2013307628 31 May 2017 of the drum and the condensate is collected in a receptacle situated in the front loading cover with the gravity effect.
[0005] In the European Patent Application No. EP1584734, a condensing type clothes dryer is explained that comprises a heat exchanger integrated to the work top covering the upper part of the body.
[0006] There is a need for a laundry washing and drying machine wherein the condensation efficiency of the air-cooled condenser is improved.
[0006a] It is an object of the present invention to at least substantially satisfy the above need.
[0006b] The present invention provides a laundry washing and drying machine comprising: a body; a drum wherein laundry is to be placed; a tub wherein the drum is moveable; a control panel; an upper plate that covers a top side of the body; a loading door situated on a body front wall; an air-cooled condenser disposed at an upper side of the tub, the air-cooled condenser condenses processing air; a fan that delivers cooling air sucked from an outside environment to the condenser; an inlet opening disposed on the body that provides entry of the cooling air to the condenser from the outside environment; an outlet opening that provides the cooling air leaving the condenser to be discharged to the outside environment; and a cooling air duct that directs the cooling air from the inlet opening to the condenser and from the condenser to the outlet opening, wherein: the inlet opening is situated at an upper side of the body front wall; the outlet opening is situated at an upper side of the body rear wall; the fan is situated just behind the inlet opening; and the cooling air duct is disposed substantially at the upper side of the tub, the cooling air duct extending from the fan to the condenser and the outlet opening horizontally and straightly.
AH26(13070367_2):JBL 3 2013307628 31 May 2017 [0007] According to an embodiment, a laundry washing and drying machine comprises an aircooled condenser disposed at the upper side of the tub and the cooling air received from the outside environment is passed through the condenser in order to condense the processing air passed over the laundry in the drying process.
[0008] The cooling air is sucked from an inlet opening situated at the upper part of the machine body front wall by means of a fan and delivered to the condenser via the cooling air duct.
[0009] The cooling air leaving the condenser is discharged to the outside environment from the outlet opening situated at the upper side of the body rear wall by passing through the cooling air duct.
[0010] The cooling air fan is situated just behind the inlet opening, the cooling air duct extends from the fan to the condenser and from the condenser to the outlet opening horizontally and straightly without making turns and the cooling air is provided to traverse a minimum distance inside the body without suffering loss in pressure or flow rate and without heating up. Thus, condensation effectiveness is increased by accelerating the cooling of the condenser.
[0011] In an embodiment, an extension is disposed at the rear side of the upper plate covering the top side of the machine body, that prevents the components like the valve, hose from bearing against the wall and the outlet opening opens to the outside environment just below this extension. Thus, the cooling air is provided to be discharged freely to the outside environment from the rear wall of the machine body.
[0012] In another embodiment, a bend is arranged between the inlet opening and the fan situated just therebehind, through which the cooling air duct extends curvilinearly and thus the fan cannot be seen from the inlet opening. The inlet opening is covered by a front protector, furthermore a rear protector is disposed inside the bend, at the front side of the fan, thereby increasing safety by preventing the user from accessing the fan through the inlet opening.
[0013] The inlet opening is situated at the upper side of the body front wall, on the wide triangular section between the control panel and the loading door. The edge of the inlet opening facing the loading door is curvilinear in shape and parallel to the outer side of the loading door. In the laundry washing and drying machine according to an embodiment of the present invention, an area on the body front wall that is not used in conventional embodiments is utilized for forming the inlet opening.
AH26( 13070367_2):JBL 3a 2013307628 31 May 2017 [0014] In the laundry washing and drying machine according to an embodiment of the present invention, the distance and bends traversed by the cooling air inside the body is decreased by means of the cooling air duct, and heating and pressure/flow rate losses are minimised. The condenser is provided to be cooled effectively and laundry drying duration is decreased.
[0015] A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described hereinafter, by way of example only, with referenced to the accompanying drawings, wherein: [0016] Figure 1 - is the sideways schematic view of a laundry washing and drying machine.

Rear protector WO 2014/032871 PCT/EP2013/065671 4/9 [0019] The laundry washing and drying machine (1) is horizontal axis and front loading type and comprises a body (2), a drum (3) wherein the laundry is placed, a tub (4) wherein the drum (3) moves, a control panel (5) whereon buttons and displays are arranged, an upper plate (6) that covers the top side of the body (2), a loading door (7) situated on the body (2) front wall, that is opened/closed for loading/unloading the laundry, a processing air duct (not shown in the figures) wherein the processing air circulation, providing the drying of the laundry, is performed in the drying process after the washing process, a processing air fan (not shown in the figures) that provides circulation of the processing air, a heater (not shown in the figures) disposed in the processing air duct, an air-cooled condenser (8) disposed at the upper side of the tub (4), that condenses the processing air, a cooling air fan (9) (will be referred to as the ‘Tan” in the description and the claims) that cools the condenser (8) by delivering the cooling air (CA) sucked from the outside environment to the condenser (8) and thereby enables the condenser (8) to condense the processing air, an inlet opening (10) arranged on the body (2), that provides entry of cooling air (CA) to the condenser (8) from the outside environment, an outlet opening (11) that provides the cooling air (CA) leaving the condenser (8) to be discharged to the outside environment and a cooling air duct (12) that provides the cooling air (CA) to be directed from the inlet opening (10) to the condenser (8) and from the condenser (8) to the outlet opening (11).
[0020] The laundry washing and drying machine (1) of the present invention comprises - the inlet opening (10) situated at the upper side of the body (2) front wall, PCT/EP2013/065671 WO 2014/032871 5/9 - the outlet opening (11) situated at the upper side of the body (2) rear wall, - the fan (9) situated just behind the inlet opening (10) and - the cooling air duct (12) disposed substantially at the upper side of the tub (4), extending from the fan (9) to the condenser (8) and the outlet opening (11) horizontally and straightly (Figure 1).
[0021] In the laundry washing and drying machine (1), the processing air, humidified by passing over the laundry inside the drum (3) in the drying process after washing, is delivered to the condenser (8) by means of the processing air duct and the processing air fan. The condenser (8) condenses and dehumidifies the processing air and the heater heats the processing air. The cooling air (CA) sucked to the condenser (8) from the inlet opening (10) by means of the fan (9) condenses the humid processing air inside the condenser (8) by decreasing the temperature thereof and thus the hot and dry processing air is delivered onto the laundry in the drum (3). The cooling air (CA) leaving the condenser (8) reaches the outlet opening (11) via the cooling air duct (12) and is discharged to the outside environment. The fan (9) disposed just behind the inlet opening (10) and the cooling air duct (12) that extends horizontally and straightly between the fan (9)-condenser (8)-outlet opening (11) provides the cooling air (CA) to reach the condenser (8) and to the outlet opening (11) from the condenser (8) without making turns onwards from the fan (9) and by following an almost straight and short path. Thus, the distance travelled by the cooling air (CA) inside the body (2) and hence the heating effect on the cooling air (CA) of the heat inside the body (2) is decreased. Furthermore, the pressure and flow rate losses in the cooling air (CA) are decreased. The condenser (8) is cooled effectively and the condensation efficiency thereof is increased. By means of the inlet opening (10) and the outlet opening (11) being situated at the upper side of the body (2), the particles like dust, lint, found especially on the floor of the location where the laundry washing and drying machine (1) stands, are prevented from entering the cooling air duct (12) and the condenser (8). WO 2014/032871 PCT/EP2013/065671 6/9 [0022] In an embodiment of the present invention, the laundry washing and drying machine (1) comprises an extension (13) situated at the rear side of the upper plate (6), extending outwards from the body (2) such that a gap (B) remains between the body (2) and the wall of the installation place or the wall of the cabinet wherein the laundry washing and drying machine (1) is placed, protecting the components like the valve, the hose, cables etc. at the rear side of the laundry washing and drying machine (1), and the outlet opening (11) situated at the rear wall of the body (2) which opens to the gap (B) just under the extension (13) (Figure 1).
[0023] In this embodiment, the gap (B) just under the extension (13) is utilized for freely discharging the cooling air (CA) to the outside environment from between the rear wall of the body (2) and the wall of the cabinet or of the room wherein the laundry washing and drying machine (1) is installed. In situations the laundry washing and drying machine (1) is installed especially inside a cabinet or furniture, the portion of the rear wall of the cabinet is not required to be cut at the level of the outlet opening (11) and the cooling air (CA) is provided to be discharged from the outlet opening (11) to the gap (B) and hence to the outside environment without obstructing the airflow.
[0024] In an embodiment of the present invention, the laundry washing and drying machine (1) comprises a bend (14) that forms the portion of the cooling air duct (12) between the inlet opening (10) and the fan (9), which extends from below the control panel (5) and between the inlet opening (10) and the fan (9) (Figure 1). The fan (9) is positioned above the cooling air duct (12) , just behind the inlet opening (10), the bend (14) extends curvilinearly from the inlet opening (10) towards the fan (9) and the fan (9) is not seen from inlet opening (10). Consequently, especially children are prevented from reaching the fan (9) through the inlet opening (10) and user safety is provided. The bend (14) extends towards the fan (9) from right under the control panel (5) and the electronic components in the control panel (5) are prevented from overheating.
[0025] In another embodiment of the present invention, the laundry washing and drying machine (1) comprises a detachable front protector (15) in grill PCT/EP2013/065671 WO 2014/032871 7/9 and/or perforated shape, mounted over the inlet opening (10) on the front wall of the body (2) (Figure 1, Figure 2).
[0026] In another embodiment of the present invention, the laundry washing and drying machine (1) comprises a rear protector (16) configured as a coarse filter or sieve, situated inside the bend (14) prior to the fan (9) (Figure 1). The rear protector (16) does not decrease the flow rate of the cooling air (CA) sucked by the fan (9) and prevents external unwanted particles passing through the front protector (15) from reaching the fan (9). The rear protector (16) furthermore prevents the user from reaching the fan (9) through the inlet opening (10) in situations the front protector (15) is not mounted and provides additional safety.
[0027] In an embodiment of the present invention, the inlet opening (10) is situated at the upper side of the body (2) front wall, in the region remaining between the control panel (5) and the loading door (7), which has a considerably wide area (Figure 2). The mentioned region is vacant in state of the art embodiments and in the laundry washing and drying machine (1) of the present invention, this dead area is utilized for forming the inlet opening (10). The edge of the inlet opening (10) facing the loading door (7) is parallel to the outer edge of the loading door (7) and curvilinear in shape, thereby increasing the cross-sectional area of the inlet opening (10) and providing an esthetic appearance.
[0028] In the laundry washing and drying machine (1), the path traversed by the cooling air (CA) cooling the condenser (8), wherein the condensation process is performed, is shortened and turns are decreased. The cooling air (CA) cools the condenser (8) effectively without heating up and being subjected to flow rate/pressure losses inside the body (2) and the condensation efficiency of the condenser (8) is increased. The duration of the drying process decreases and energy saving is provided.
