Description

1 A FOUNDATION ASSEMBLY FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to foundation assemblies and more particularly but not exclusively to foundation assemblies for transportable buildings. BACKGROUND [0002] Transportable buildings, such as buildings that provide dormitories, classrooms or office space are typically supported on concrete pads. This usually requires the drilling of a hole into which concrete is delivered with reinforcing. The transportable building rests on the concrete pad. However to secure the building in position, so as to resist loads such as wind loads, a separate connection is then provided between the building and concrete pads. [0003] The above discussed means of support transportable buildings is time consuming to construct and is expensive. OBJECT [0004] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages. SUMMARY [0005] There is disclosed herein a foundation assembly to at least partly support a building, the assembly including: a screw member having a longitudinal axis and to be rotatably driven about the axis into a ground layer, the member having an upper portion; a nut supported by the upper portion and having a threaded passage; a threaded shaft threadably engaged in the passage so that angular movement therebetween causes longitudinal movement of the shaft relative to the nut; and a mounting supported by the shaft, the mounting including a first part fixed to the shaft, and a second part adjustably fixed to the first part.
2 [0006] Preferably, said axis is also the longitudinal axis of said shaft and said passage, with angular movement between the two paths being about said axis providing for angular adjustment of the second part. [0007] Preferably, each part is provided with a plurality of holes arranged angularly about said axis, with the holes of the parts being alignable to provide for fasteners to pass therethrough to secure the first part to the second part. [0008] Preferably, the second part includes an engaging portion to provide for the securing of a beam to the second part. [0009] Preferably, the second part is slotted to provide for insertion of the beam relative to the second part so that at least portion of the beam is located between the first and second parts so that upon tensioning of the fasteners the beam is secured to the parts. [0010] Preferably, said assembly includes a mounting tube fixed to the nut, with said tube extending into said member but fixed thereto. [0011] In an alternative preferred form, the second part is a bracket having a pair of upwardly extending flanges and a base extending between the flanges, with the base having a slot through which threaded fasteners pass to be secured to the first part. [0012] Preferably, the flanges are configured to engage a beam of the building. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS [0013] A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0014] Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a foundation assembly; [0015] Figure 2 is a schematic plan view of a part of the assembly of Figure 1; [0016] Figure 3 is a schematic parts exploded side elevation of the assembly of Figure 1; 3 [0017] Figure 4 is a schematic isometric view of a modification of a mounting employed in the assembly of Figure 1; [0018] Figure 5 is a schematic top plan view of the mounting of Figure 4; and [0019] Figure 6 is a schematic end elevation of the mounting of Figures 4 and 5 supporting a beam. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments [0020] In Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a foundation assembly 10 supporting a beam 11 of a transportable building. [0021] The assembly 10 includes a threaded member 12 consisting of a shaft or tube 13 about which there is wound a spiral flange 14. The flange 14 is also fixed to the tube 13. The screw member 12 has a longitudinal generally upright axis 15, with the member 12 having an upper portion 16. [0022] Mounted on and secured to the upper portion 16 is a nut assembly 17. The nut assembly 17 includes a sleeve 18 that slidably inserted in the tube 13. The upper end of the sleeve 18 is provided with a nut 19 having a threaded passage 20. Extending downwardly from the nut 19 is an inner tubular member 21. [0023] Threadably engaged in the passage 20 is a threaded shaft 22. The threaded shaft 22, passage 20, sleeve 18 and tube 21 have as their longitudinal axis, the axis 15. [0024] Fixed to the upper extremity of the shaft 22 is a mounting 23 for a beam 11 of a transportable building. The mounting 23 includes a first part (plate) 24 to which there is attached a second part (plate) 25, with each part 24 and 25 being provided with a plurality of apertures 26 that are arranged angularly about the axis 15 at regular angular intervals. The apertures 26 of the parts 24 and 25 are aligned so that threaded fasteners 27 can pass through the aligned apertures 26 and tensioned to secure the part 25 to the part 24.
4 [0025] The part 25 is provided with a slot 28 to provide for insertion of the beam 11 so as to have a lower flange thereof 29 located between the parts 24 and 25 so that upon tensioning of the fasteners 27, the lower flange 29 is clamped between the parts 24 and 25 thereby securing the beam 11 to the foundation assembly 10. Accordingly, the beam 11 is prevented from upward movement relative to the assembly 10. [0026] Preferably, the tube 13 is provided with transversely aligned apertures 30 that are aligned with a pair of transversely aligned passages 31 of the sleeve 18 to provide for a threaded fastener 32 passing through the aligned apertures 30 and 31 to thereby secure the nut assembly 17 to the tube 13. [0027] In use of the above described preferred embodiment, the screw member 12 is rotated about its longitudinal axis 15 so that it penetrates and is engaged in a soil layer. Thereafter the nut assembly 17 is inserted in the tube 13 and the threaded fastener 32 inserted and tensioned. The shaft 22 is then moved angularly about the axis 15 to locate the part 24 at a desired height. Thereafter the part 25 is mounted on the part 24 with the lower flange 29 located between the parts 24 and 25. Thereafter the threaded fasteners 27 are tensioned so that the beam 11 is secured to the member 12. The part 25 is located at a desired angular position about the axis 15 by selecting a pair of apertures 26 through which the fasteners pass. [0028] The threaded shaft 22 and the apertures 26 provide for adjustment of the height and angular orientation of the part 25 to accommodate inaccuracies in the location and/or angular position of the member 12. [0029] In the embodiment of Figures 4, 5 and 6, the plate 25 is replaced with a bracket 35. The bracket 35 has a pair of upwardly extending flanges 36 between which there is located a base 37. The base 37 has a slot 38 through which the threaded fasteners 27 pass to secure the bracket 35 to the plate 24. Accordingly the slot 38 is aligned with a pair of the apertures 26, with the apertures 26 located on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis 15. The angular position of the bracket 35 can be adjusted by selecting a desired pair of apertures 26. [0030] The flanges 36 each have a "T" shaped slot 39 that is shaped to receive the flange 29 and web 41 of the beam 11. The configuration of the slot 39 and beam 11 prevents upward movement of the beam 11 relative to the assembly 10.
