Description
S&F Ref: P043313 AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address Azuma Design Pty Limited, of Applicant: an Australian company, ACN 002 031 307, of 160-162 Newton Road, Wetherill Park, New South Wales, 2164, Australia Actual Inventor(s): Michael Brian Alchin Address for Service: Spruson & Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 35 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) Invention Title: A handle assembly Associated Provisional Application Details: [33] Country: [31] Appl'n No(s): [32] Application Date: AU 2011903173 08 Aug 2011 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 5845c(6563330_1) 1 A HANDLE ASSEMBLY Field [0001] The present invention relates to handle assemblies and more particularly but not exclusively to handle assemblies employed with doors and windows, including the doors and windows that are slidably or pivotably mounted. Background of the Invention [0002] For sliding doors and windows provided with a handle, the handle extends generally downward or upward and is gripped by a user and pivoted in a plane generally parallel to the door or window. This action releases the lock from engagement with the striker, with force being applied to the handle that results in sliding motion of the door or window. [0003] For pivoting doors and windows the handle extends generally horizontally and moves downwardly in a plane generally parallel to the door or window to release the lock and to cause pivoting of the door or window. [0004] Due to the above two means of operating the handles, handles are designed for use with a sliding door (or window), or for use with a pivoting door (or window). [0005] The above handles have the disadvantage that several types of handles need to be manufactured for different uses. The increases the cost of the handles and increases the stock to be held. Object of the Invention [0006] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
2 Summary of the Invention [0007] There is disclosed herein a handle assembly to be attached to a door or window, the assembly including: an elongate plate to be secured to a surface of the door or window, the plate having a handle aperture; a handle mounted in the handle aperture and secured to the plate for pivoting movement about a pivot axis that is generally normal to the plate, the handle including an elongated portion to be gripped by a user, the handle portion extending at least partly radially relative to said axis, wherein the plate includes a lock cylinder aperture within which a lock cylinder is to be located, the lock cylinder aperture being spaced longitudinally of the plate from the handle aperture; locating means having radially extending projections that engage corresponding recesses in the handle, the locating means being adapted to locate the elongated portion in a selected one of a plurality of positions angularly spaced about said axis, with two of the locations being spaced by 900; an engaging means slidably mounted on the plate for generally linear movement perpendicular to the axis and engaged with the locating means to provide the locations; wherein the handle assembly is urged to the locations so as to be locatable at and urged to a desired one of the locations; wherein the locating means is a cam member fixed to the elongated portion so that it moves therewith, the cam member providing a plurality of lobes that are spaced angularly about said axis; wherein the cam member includes a plurality of troughs, each trough being located between a pair of the lobes; and wherein the engaging means includes at least one cam follower having a convex surface that engages the cam member troughs to urge the positions, and wherein at least one spring is positioned longitudinally with respect to the cam follower and extends between the plate and the at least one cam follower in a direction of elongation of the plate to urge the cam follower into sliding engagement with the cam member troughs. [0008] Preferably, said plate is elongated so that when secured to said surface, the plate is longitudinally upward extending.
2a [0009] [This paragraph is intentionally left blank] [0010] Preferably, the lock cylinder aperture is below the handle aperture.
3 [0011] Preferably, there are four lobes, with the lobes being spaced from each other by 900. [0012] Preferably, two of the lobes are vertically aligned and the other two lobes are horizontally aligned so that the lobes urge the elongated portion to be upward extending, downward extending, or extending in either direction horizontally. Brief Description of the Drawings [0013] A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0014] Figure 1 is a schematic rear elevation of a handle assembly; and [0015] Figure 2 is a schematic parts exploded isometric view of the handle assembly of Figure 1. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment [0016] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a handle assembly 10. The handle assembly 10 includes an upwardly elongated plate 11 that would typically be secured to a major surface of a door or window by means of threaded fasteners passing through apertures 12. [0017] The plate 11 has a handle aperture 13 within which there is mounted a handle 14. The handle 14 includes an elongated portion 15 that is gripped by a user to operate the assembly 10. The handle 14 is pivotally mounted in the plate 11 for pivoting movement about a pivot axis 15. The axis 15 is generally horizontally oriented and perpendicular to the plate 11. [0018] The handle 14 also includes a base 16 fixed to or formed integrally with the portion 15 and extending generally normal thereto. The extremity of the base 16 is provided with a shaft 17 that projects through the aperture 13 and slidably engages the plate 11. The shaft 17 has an annular slot 18 that is engaged by a clip 19 to secure the handle 14 to the plate 11. [0019] The plate 11 is also provided with a lock cylinder aperture 20 within which a lock cylinder is mounted.
4 [0020] The handle 14 also includes a locating means 21 mounted on the shaft 17. Accordingly the locating means 21 pivots with the portion 15. [0021] The locating means 21 is a cam member 25 having a plurality of cam lobes 26 spaced angularly about the axis 24. In this particular example there are four cam lobes 26, the lobes 26 each being spaced by 900 about the axis 24. In particular the lobes 26 are each displaced 450 from a vertical plane located along the axis 24. [0022] Mounted in the plate 11 is an engaging means 27 that is operatively associated with the locating means 21 to provide for angular locations at which the handle 14 is to be located. The locations are spaced by 90' with two of the locations being located in a vertical plane, and the other two locations being located in a horizontal plane. [0023] The engaging means 27 includes a pair of cam followers 28 that slidably mounted on the plate 11 for generally linear movement perpendicular to the axis 24. Springs 29 extend between the plate 11 and cam followers 28 to urge the cam followers 28 into sliding engagement with the cam member 25 and therefore lobes 26. Each of the cam followers 28 has a convex surface 30 that engages the cam member 25. [0024] The troughs 31 are spaced by 90' about the axis 24 to locate the handle 14 so as to be generally horizontally (left or right) oriented or vertically (up or down) oriented. The cam followers 28 urge the handle 14 to the closest location as provided by the troughs 31. [0025] The above described handle assembly 10 provides the advantage that it may be employed with a pivotally mounted door or a slidably mounted door. For a pivotally mounted door the portion 15 would extend generally horizontally in either a left or right handed direction. For a sliding door the portion 15 would preferably extend downward, although it could also extend upward.
