Abstract
The device is a system of heating and cooling relying on convection currents and with or without assistance from a fan or fans to direct air via floor joists and wall cavities. During daytime in winter, solar heated air is directed to and stored by means of the thermal mass of internal brick walls. The device integrates a fixed water tank as a further heat sink and temperature stabiliser. A system of adjustable vents directs air flow at the required temperature into the conditioned living space. a)0 -b E COD tm 0
Description
DESCRIPTION Title of Invention Solar powered heating and cooling system Technical Field Environmentally sustainable housing Summary of Invention An enclosed glass house area captures solar energy so heating the air contained in the glass area. The heated air is transferred via convection through enclosed floor joists and a control louvre to be captured and retained in the thermal mass comprised by two internal brick walls and a concrete water tank integrated into the construction of the home. The heat of the thermal mass is subsequently transferred to conditioned living spaces adjacent to the thermal mass. Release of the stored heat continues during night time hours. During summer the greenhouse is isolated from the system by use of the control louvre. Cool air may be extracted from beneath the house by means of an auxiliary fan and directed to the conditioned living spaces via adjustable vents.
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION 1. The invention is based on the greenhouse effect. 2. An enclosed glass area (b) beneath a custom built residence captures solar energy so heating the air contained in the glass area. 3. This solar greenhouse will collect the equivalent of the energy released by five 2000 watt electrical heaters during daylight hours in winter. 4. The heated air is transferred via convection through ducting channels formed by the enclosure of the spaces between wooden floor joists (d) and a control louvre (i). 5. The heated air is captured in a vertical enclosed space between internal brick walls. 6. The thermal mass of the internal brick walls and the concrete water tank (a) is integrated into the construction of the home. The heat of the thermal mass is subsequently transferred to conditioned living spaces (h). 7. Release of the stored heat continues during night time hours. 8. During summer the enclosed glass area is isolated from the system by use of the control louvre. Cool air may be extracted from beneath the house by an auxiliary fan (f) and directed to the conditioned living spaces via adjustable vents (g).
Claims (4)
1. A solar air heating area comprising a glazed enclosure located beneath the conditioned living space.
2. During winter months daytime solar heated air directed to and heat transferred to the thermal mass of internal brick wall surfaces and the roof of an integrated concrete water tank.
3. During summer months a summer/winter control louvre restricting the flow of heated air from the glazed green house area.
4. During summer months an auxiliary fan may be used to extract cool air from an area behind the heat sink water tank and distributing cool air via vents to the conditioned living space.
