Abstract

The invention is a blend of extra virgin olive oil and industrial hemp seed oil to optimise their nutritional attributes, plus improve the taste and culinary uses for human consumption. Also, the invention is to use their combined oil extraction waste by-products to manufacture a more environmentally sustainable fish food from land based agriculture.

Description

1 Description My patent application involves blending both cool climate grown hemp oil and olive oil. Due to envisaged miscibility problems, this may have to be done during the malaxation stage prior to extraction of the olive oil. The resultant oil will have the benefits of each others nutritional attributes, plus the increased shelf life and smoke point of the olive/hemp oil may increase the cooking applications. I am expecting that the shelf life could be extended considerably, especially if for part of this time it is stored in factory vats cooled and stored in a nitrogen atmosphere. Adding cool climate extra virgin olive oil will also increase the tocopherol content, as this olive oil contains some of the worldaETMs highest levels of Vitamin E. My application also includes the additional processing of the waste olive pits through a hemp seed screw expeller to further grind them down and blend the resultant oil, protein and fibre with already processed hemp seed meal. This additional olive pit crushing should be done quickly after the original olive oil extraction process. It is therefore necessary to have both types of oil extraction machines on site. The meal combination is then mixed and pelletised/dried almost immediately for later use as fish food. The meal combination would also require the addition of prescribed amounts of crushed olive leaf solution before pelletising. Olive leaf extract has antifungal and broad spectrum antibacterial properties. These will add to the shelf life of the pellets, reduce mold attack in storage, and subject to its antibacterial effectiveness may allow the fish farming industry to exclude the addition of other antibiotics to their existing fish meal. To maximise the nutritional attributes of the hemp meal it is expected that it would need to be prepared progressively throughout the year. If this is necessary, hemp seed can be stored safely for at least 12 months, but olive fruit needs to be processed fresh. The recycled olive pit oil from the screw expeller could be separated and stored separately to the pit fibre and protein, which would be dried and stored. The resultant olive waste components could then be reconstituted on demand as they are mixed with fresh hemp oil seed meal. Alternatively the olive fruit oil extraction machine could be fitted with a de-pitting machine, and the whole olive pit could then be dried and stored for crushing later in the screw expeller with the hemp seed. Fresh crushed olive leaf matter could be added throughout the year.
2 The intention of my idea is to provide an alternative human nutrition source of the essential fatty acids omega 3 and 6 that are normally found in fish. The blending of the oils will allow them to be more easily marketed due to extended shelf life, increased cooking applications and taste. Hempseed oil has a pleasant nutty taste, whereas extra virgin olive oil can be fruity, but mildly bitter with some after-taste pungency. The blended oil will therefore assist the conservation of wild species within the marine environment, by providing an environmentally sustainable land based source of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids that are within the W.H.O. nutritionally recommended proportions. The pellets are to provide an alternative land based and more sustainable source of food for farmed fish. This hopefully will reduce or completely replace the current quantity of wild small fish that are ground into fish meal to feed farmed fish.
