Abstract
The method of communicating the location of vacant passenger space on board in a passenger rail vehicle is disclosed. A system collects passenger space occupancy data for a car and provides indication to the passengers for the available vacant spaces. The information of the vacant space includes vacant seats and vacant standing spaces. This information is communicated to the passengers via a Bluetooth data link on the board and via a mobile phone application before the arrival of the train at a station.
Description
1 Description Vacant Passenger Seat Locator This invention relates to the application of existing technologies to identify and communicate the location of vacant passenger space on board a passenger rail vehicle. When most people enter a rail passenger car in a multi car consist they are unaware of where the vacant passenger space is located. Their primary concern is to get on board before the train moves away. This invention proposes to gather passenger space occupancy data for the car and the overall consist, and provide an indication to passengers as to the location of vacant passenger space. This data would be display in the vestibule entry area of each car showing your location in the consist and the location of vacant space both seated and standing. This information would also be available on board via a Bluetooth data link and in advance of the train arriving at the station by mobile phone application.
Claims (3)
1. Space occupancy detection. This task can be carried out using any number of different sensor technologies being either passive non contact type to direct switching type. The technology chosen would be dependent on the operating environment and level of vandal resistance required. Similar technology is used in modem automotive vehicles to register seat occupancy and modern shopping centre car parks to indicate available parking space.
2. Data Collection. The sensor signal data is to be collected and transmitted as a signal that can be used to create a visual display of the vehicle occupancy for both crew and passengers. This data may be recorded for future reference of passenger movement and vehicle utilisation trends between stations and across the network.
3. Information Display. The collected data would be prominently displayed to entering passengers in the vestibule entry area allowing them to make an informed 3 decision as to the location and direction to proceed to find vacant space. The display would show their current location and the location of unoccupied space. This information could also be displayed on board the set to passengers with suitable mobile phones via a Bluetooth link. For those passengers wishing to gain advanced information the data could be made available via a mobile phone application which would have real time data accessible prior to the train arriving at the platform.
