Description

AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT SKIRTING The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: SKIRTING TECHNICAL FIELD 5 The present invention relates to skirting. The present invention has particular, although not exclusive application to skirting used in high rise buildings. BACKGROUND 10 The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge. Skirting (also called skirting board, skirting, mopboard, floor molding, as well 15 as base molding) acts as a cover for covering the lowest part of an interior wall to cover the joint between the wall surface (usually plaster or drywall) and the floor. Extruded aluminium skirting is known in high rise buildings. During 20 manufacture, the aluminium skirting can be clamped at either end and anodized (i.e. coated with a protective metal oxide coat). Undesirably, the ends of the skirting often need to be trimmed prior to installation owing to marking resulting from the clamping. 25 During installation, the skirting is held against the base of the wall and held in place whilst fastened to the wall with fasteners (e.g. screws). In practice, the unwieldy long skirting can shift during sequential fastening of the fasteners along the skirting so that the skirting is undesirably misaligned (e.g. not horizontal). In this event, the skirting must be unfastened by releasing each 30 fastener, realigned and then sequentially refastened (one fastener at a time) in its required orientation. Some embodiments of the present invention provide skirting which facilitates realignment if required.
2 Embodiments of the present invention avoid marking of the skirting during anodization. 5 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided skirting including: a body; and 10 adhesive tape for adhering the body to a wall. In some embodiments, the skirting can be adhered to the wall with the adhesive tape prior to sequential fastening with respective fasteners (e.g. screws). If the adhered skirting requires realignment, the skirting can be 15 readily peeled from the wall, realigned and then re-adhered without unfastening any fasteners (which of course have not yet been fastened). The adhesive tape may be double sided tape with one adhesive side adhering to the body and the other adhesive side adhering to the wall. Preferably, the 20 adhesive tape has a backing strip which can be removed from the other adhesive side so that the body can be adhered to the wall. The adhesive tape may be supplied, for example, by TESATM. The tape may be about 19mm wide. 25 The body may include: a face plate; a cover strip holder for locating above the face plate and for holding a cover strip; and a spacer for spacing the face plate from the wall. 30 The adhesive tape may extend along the rear of the cover strip holder. The body may define a plurality of spaced apart holes extending through the cover strip holder and for receiving respective fasteners. Advantageously, the 3 holes may receive hooks which hang the body during anodization to avoid marking of the skirting. The skirting may be about 125mm wide and in excess of 3000mm long. The outermost holes may be located a small distance (e.g. 10mm) from the ends of the skirting compared with the large distance (e.g. 5 600mm) between adjacent holes to facilitate adjacent fastening of two like skirtings to a common stud. The cover strip holder may include a planar wall from which a pair of inwardly extending lips extend to define a recess in which the cover strip can be 10 received. The spacer may be generally L-shaped. The skirting may further include a vinyl cover strip for being received by the 15 body to cover fasteners fastening the body to the wall. The body may be integrally formed from extruded aluminium. The aluminium may have an alloy rating of 6063, a temper rating of T5 and/or a mass of between 0.450 and 0.600 kg/m. In one embodiment, the aluminium has a 20 mass of about 0.472 kg/m. In another embodiment, the aluminium has a mass of about 0.570 kg/m. The body may be anodized. According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided skirting including: 25 an elongate body; adhesive carried by the body; and backing which can be removed from the adhesive so that the body can be adhered to the wall. 30 The adhesive may extend along the body in a continuous line. According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided, a method of adhering skirting to a wall, the method including the step of: removing backing to expose adhesive extending along the skirting.
4 The method may further involve pressing the adhesive against the wall to adhere the skirting to the wall. 5 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Preferred features, embodiments and variations of the invention may be discerned from the following Detailed Description which provides sufficient information for those skilled in the art to perform the invention. The Detailed 10 Description is not to be regarded as limiting the scope of the preceding Summary of the Invention in any way. The Detailed Description will make reference to a number of drawings as follows: Figure Ia is a end view of skirting in accordance with an embodiment of the 15 present invention; and Figure 1b is a rear view of the skirting of Figure 1 a. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS 20 According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided skirting 2 as shown in Figure 1. The skirting 2 includes an aluminium body 4 and double-sided adhesive tape 6 for adhering the body 4 to a wall. The skirting 2 can be adhered to the wall with the adhesive tape 6 prior to 25 sequentially fastening the skirting 2 to the wall with respective fasteners (e.g. screws). If the skirting 2 requires realignment, the skirting 2 can be readily peeled from the wall, realigned and then re-adhered without unfastening any fasteners (which of course have not yet been fastened). A detailed description of the skirting 2 is provided below. 30 The adhesive tape 6 is double-sided tape with an inner adhesive side adhering to the body 4 and the outer adhesive side adhering to the wall. Prior to adhering, the adhesive tape 6 has a backing strip which can be removed 5 from the outer adhesive side so that the body 4 can be adhered to the wall. The adhesive tape is supplied by TESATM and is about 19mm wide. The aluminium body 4 includes a planar face plate 8. A cover strip holder 10 5 of the body 4 is located above the face plate 8 and holds a vinyl cover strip (not shown). The adhesive tape 6 extends along the rear of the cover strip holder 10. The aluminium body 4 also includes a generally L-shaped spacer 12 for spacing the face plate 8 from the wall. 10 The body 4 defines a plurality of spaced apart pre-drilled mounting holes 14 extending through the cover strip holder 10 and for receiving respective fasteners in the form of screws (not shown). Advantageously, the holes 14 can receive hooks which hang the body 4 during anodization to avoid marking of the skirting 2. The outermost holes 14 are located a small distance (e.g. 15 10mm) from the ends of the skirting 2 compared with the large distance (e.g. 600mm) between adjacent holes 14, to facilitate adjacent fastening of two like skirtings 2 to a common wall stud. The skirting 2 is about 125mm wide and 3620mm long. 20 The skirting 2 further includes a vinyl cover strip (not shown) for being removably received by the body 4 to cover fasteners which fasten the body 4 to the wall. The cover strip holder 10 includes a planar wall to which the tape 6 is adhered and from which a pair of inwardly extending lips 16 extend to define a channel 18 in which the cover strip can be received. 25 The body 4 is homogeneously formed from extruded aluminium which is then anodized. The aluminium has an alloy rating of 6063, a temper rating of T5 and a mass of between 0.450 and 0.600 kg/m. In one embodiment, the aluminium has a mass of about 0.472 kg/m. In another embodiment, the 30 aluminium has a mass of about 0.570 kg/m. A method of adhering the skirting 2 to a wall is briefly described. The method includes the step of removing the tape backing to expose the outer adhesive extending along the skirting 2.
6 Next the outer adhesive is pressed against the wall to adhere the skirting 2 to the wall. 5 If the skirting 2 requires realignment, the skirting 2 can be readily peeled from the wall, realigned and then re-adhered. Once the skirting is aligned as desired, the fasteners can be inserted through the pre-formed holes 14 and into the wall to securely fasten the skirting 2 to 10 the wall. A person skilled in the art will appreciate that many embodiments and variations can be made without departing from the ambit of the present invention. 15 For example, the dimensions shown in the drawing are in millimetres and, although desirable can be varied. In the preferred embodiment, the double sided tape 6 was adhered to the 20 anodized aluminium body 4. In an alternative embodiment, adhesive can instead be applied directly along the anodized body and removable backing can then cover the adhesive. In use, the backing can be removed from the adhesive so that the body 4 can be adhered to the wall. 25 In compliance with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific to structural or methodical features. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to specific features shown or described since the means herein described comprises preferred forms of putting the invention into effect. The invention is, therefore, claimed in any of 30 its forms or modifications within the proper scope of the appended claims appropriately interpreted by those skilled in the art.
