11350848iDOC -2 IMPROVEMENTSINSTRUCTURES Field of invention 5 The invention relates to the field of temporary structure construction. More particularly, the invention relates to a temporary screen, hoarding or wall structure. Background to the invention 10 Temporary structures such as walls, screens and hoardings are often used to partition off an area in a non-permanent manner in a variety of circumstances. Typical uses of such structures include: in shopping centres or malls across a shop front or other retail area to separate shoppers from workmen operating behind the structures, for example developing a retail area; at building sites to enclose the site 15 from public access; and at exhibitions or fairs to create an enclosure for a stand or display. An existing way of creating these structures is to tailor-make panels and fit them together on-site using a material such as plywood or other cheap and easy to work 20 wood. The panels often do not provide a clean, attractive looking fashion which is desirable in a retail environment so as not to deter consumers. Furthermore, some structures may not be re-usable and are disposed of after use, which is not cost effective. 25 Other solutions include modular re-usable panels which can be fitted together to fit a variety of uses. These solutions provide a degree of flexibility but are often of a fixed height and width and may not be suitable for application to gaps of any size. There is the need to be able to fit gaps of any given width or height without the need to irreversibly cut the hoardings which make re-use problematic. Known panels are also 30 often large and therefore difficult or expensive to store. Previous hoardings do not provide adequate noise protection, which is desirable when workmen are working behind the hoardings close to shoppers or passers-by. In addition, dust from the worksite escaping through the hoardings can present 35 significant problems to the public. Hoardings may be required to stand unsupported on the floor, go round corners, present a flat, faceted or curved surface, stand on a variety of floor surfaces without 1350848_1DOC _3 causing damage and be quick and easy to erect. Some known systems are not able to meet these requirements. Furthermore, it may be desirable that the surface presented 'outwards' to the public should be clean and aesthetically pleasing. 5 Object of the Invention It is an object of the invention to provide an improved temporary screen or hoarding structure. 10 It is an object of the invention to provide an improved screen or hoarding structure which mitigates at least some of the aforementioned problems associated with conventional structures and systems. It is an object of the invention to at least provide the public with a useful choice. 15 Summary of the invention According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a demountable screen comprising: 20 a plurality of support means; a plurality of panels, each supported by one or more of the support means and positioned such that at least two horizontally adjacent panels overlap by an adjustable amount; and a plurality of engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the 25 panels with one or more of the support means. Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises a groove in at least one outer edge, the groove(s) being adapted to receive a portion of one of the engagement means. 30 Preferably, at least one of the engagement means comprises a flange for engaging with one of the panels. More preferably, the flange is adapted to be received by one of the grooves of the panels. Preferably, at least one of the engagement means comprises one or more means for 35 gripping one of the panels. More preferably, the means for gripping extends from the flange.
1350848_.DOC _4 Preferably, the demountable screen further comprises at least one engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the panels with one or more other of the panels. 5 Preferably, at least one of the engagement means is adapted to engage with two panels positioned at an angle to one another. Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises edging adapted to at least partially seal a gap between the panel and at least one adjacent panel. More preferably, the 10 edging is a rubber flap or flange. Preferably, at least one of the support means is adjustable in height. Preferably, the support means comprises a vertically extendible post. In a preferred 15 embodiment, the post is telescopically extendible. Optionally, the support means also comprises at least one supporting strut, which may also be telescopically extendible. Preferably, at least one of the support means comprises attachment means adapted to attach to a surrounding structure. 20 Preferably, at least one of the support means comprises a base adapted to contact the floor. More preferably, the base has a rubber surface adapted to contact the floor. Preferably, at least a bottom portion of the base is adapted to tilt. In one embodiment, 25 the base pad is pivotally attached to the support means. Alternatively, the bottom portion of the base pad is pivotally attached to another portion of the base pad. Preferably, the demountable screen comprises a door. In a preferred embodiment, the door is hinged from a frame positioned between panels. Alternatively, the door is 30 adapted to slideably engage with a slide rail, the slide rail being positioned between panels. Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises a cavity and display panel. 35 Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises a poster insert. Preferably, the panels are formed of a noise absorbent material. More preferably, the panels are formed of medium density fibreboard and/or melamine.
1350848_IDOC -5 According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a kitset for a demountable screen comprising: a plurality of support means; 5 a plurality of panels, each supported by one or more of the support means and positioned such that at least two horizontally adjacent panels overlap by an adjustable amount; and a plurality of engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the panels with one or more of the support means. 10 Preferably, the kitset is adapted to be easily stored and/or transported. Preferably, at least one of the support means is adjustable in height. 15 Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises a groove in at least one outer edge, adapted to receive a portion of one of the engagement means. Preferably, at least one of the engagement means comprises a flange for engaging with a panel. More preferably, the flange is adapted to be received by one of the 20 grooves of the panels. Preferably, the engagement means comprises one or more means for gripping one of the panels, the means for gripping extending from the flange. 25 Preferably, the kitset further comprises at least one engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the panels with one or more other panels. Preferably, at least one of the engagement means is adapted to engage with two panels positioned at an angle to one another. 30 Preferably, at least one of the panels comprises edging adapted to at least partially seal a gap between the panel and at least one adjacent panel. According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of forming a demountable screen, comprising: 10 providing a plurality of support means; providing a plurality of panels, each supported by one or more of the support means and positioned such that at least two horizontally adjacent panels overlap by an adjustable amount; and providing a plurality of engagement means adapted to engage one or more of 15 the panels with one or more of the support means. Preferably, the method comprises engaging at least one of the panels with at least one of the support means using at least one of the engagement means. More preferably, the step of engaging comprises inserting a flange of at least one of the 20 engagement means into a groove of at least one of the panels. Furthermore, the step of engaging may comprise positioning at least one of the engagement means around a post of at least one of the support means. Preferably, the method comprises at least partially sealing a gap between at least 25 two adjacent panels. More preferably, the gap is sealed using edging of at least one panel. Preferably, the method comprises inserting a door into the demountable screen. More preferably, the method comprises hinging a door from a frame positioned 30 between panels. Alternatively, the method comprises slideably engaging the door with a slide rail, the slide rail being positioned between panels. Further aspects of the invention, which should be considered in all its novel aspects, will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reading of the following 35 description which provides at least one example of a practical application of the invention.

1350848_IDOC -9 Brief Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention The invention relates to a demountable screen such as is typically used to enclose a 5 building or work site from a public area, for example in a shopping centre or mall. The terms 'screen' and 'hoarding' will be used to refer to such a structure herein, but it will be understood that for the purposes of this document the invention may be applied to any temporary wall or similar such structure. For example, the invention may be used as a partition, such as are typically used at exhibitions to separate stalls from each 10 other or to enclose a particular display. In general, the invention relates to any demountable screen, hoarding, wall or similar such structure. When a shop is being refurbished, undergoing maintenance or other similar work is being carried out in a shop the impact can have a negative effect on the surrounding 15 shops, shopping centre or general surrounds. The sight is typically disagreeable for members of the public in the area and may have a negative effect on other shops nearby. In addition, where work is carried out there may be a significant amount of noise and dust or the like produced, from which it would be advantageous to protect members of the public. 20 There is provided a system for constructing a demountable screen structure which is flexibly able to be constructed in a variety of locations and situations according to specific needs. The screen includes posts that are adjustable in height and panels that engage with the posts through engagement means, such as brackets, and form 25 the surface presented outwards. The screen or hoarding may be disassembled and easily stored and/or transported before being able to be reassembled. By using components of a screen that are able to be re-used time after time, the invention is able to provide a high quality of screen 30 whilst achieving significant cost savings over conventional screens given repetitive use. Figure 1 is an illustration of a screen 10 according to an embodiment of the invention. The left hand portion of Figure 1 is a cut-away illustration so that support means 11 35 can be seen. Screen 10 includes a number of support means, spaced along the length of the screen. Support means 11 include support posts 15. The posts support panels 12, which combine to form the face or outer surface of the screen. Brackets are used to engage or connect each panel with at least one post, as will be described 1350848_.DOC . 10 in further detail below. In Figure 1 each panel is attached to two posts to provide stability to the screen structure, although other arrangements are possible in other embodiments. 5 Panels 12 are rectangular in shape and are oriented with their longest side horizontally in the embodiment shown in Figure 1, although other arrangements are possible. The panels are stacked on top of each other to form the screen face. In Figure 1, four panels are stacked on top of each other. In other embodiments, other numbers are used. The possible variation in the number of panels and the height of 10 each panel provides substantial flexibility in the height of the screen. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, panels 12 are made of medium density fibreboard (MDF), although other materials such as particle board, wood or plastic may be used in other embodiments. Panels 12 also include an outer layer of 15 melamine to provide an outer surface which is pleasing to the eye, easy to clean, and has noise absorbing and fire retardant properties. Other embodiments may include other materials to form the outer layer of the panels, such as plastic, resin or other veneer. The panels are preferably reasonably light of weight. 20 The spacing between panels 12 is minimal, but allows enough space for the brackets engaging or connecting panels 12 with posts 15, described below. In one embodiment, the panels include flanges, flaps or other edging around their edges which contact the adjacent panel and fill the spacing between panels. This is particularly advantageous to block any noise or dust particles which could pass 25 through the spacing. The flaps are made of a flexible material such as rubber such that it may bend out of the way at the point a bracket passes through the spacing. Panels 12 are arranged such that each panel overlaps with the panel next to it. For example, panel 12a in Figure 1 overlaps with adjacent panel 12b. In the embodiment 30 shown in Figure 1, every panel overlaps with the adjacent panels on both sides. In other embodiments only a subset of the panels forming the whole screen may overlap with adjacent panels. The width of the screen can be altered by varying the amount of overlap between the panels. In this way, the screen can be flexibly adjusted to fit a space of a great number of different widths without cutting or re 35 sizing the panels. Where panels 12 overlap, the thickness of the screen is the width of two panels. It is at these points that support posts 15 are positioned in the embodiment shown in 1350848iDOC - 11 Figure 1. Brackets for engaging or connecting panels 12 with posts 15 are adapted to engage with a thickness of screen of two panels. In alternative embodiments, not all the support posts are positioned at the point of overlap between panels. In these embodiments, some of the brackets may be adapted to engage with a screen one 5 panel thick. In these embodiments a bracket or other connection means is additionally provided to connect overlapping adjacent panels, which is not required in the embodiment shown in Figure 1 since a bracket acts to attach overlapping panels to posts 15, thereby fixing the position of the overlapping panels with respect to each other. 10 Screen 10 includes hinged door 13. The panels on either side of the door are spaced apart by a width equal to door 13, which can be fitted to panels according to known methods. Door 13 is equal in height to two panels 12 such that the panel above door 13 is aligned with its adjacent panels. Other embodiments optionally include other 15 types of doors, including those of other sizes. In one example embodiment including another type of door, a sliding door is provided. In this embodiment a slide rail for the door is positioned and affixed along a horizontal spacing between panels. The door is adapted to slideably engage with the 20 slide rail such that it can be slid along the slide rail, in one position covering an opening in the screen panels. Figure 2 is a front-on view of screen 10 previously illustrated in Figure 1. Arrows 14 in Figure 2 indicate the positions of the support posts, which are not shown in the 25 figure. The positions of brackets engaging the panels with the support posts are indicated by the letter 'A'. In some embodiments, some brackets are provided which engage with two panels to connect them without also engaging with a support post or support means. 30 Figure 3 is an illustration of a support means 30 according to an embodiment of the invention. Support means 30 is substantially similar to support means 11 shown in Figure 1. Support means 30 includes support post 31, base 32, strut 33, bracket 34 and strut 35. Whilst not all of these components are essential parts of the invention, 35 the support means is generally adapted to adequately support the screen. Post 31 is telescopically extendable and is therefore adjustable in height. A screw or other tightening means is provided to secure the telescoping components of the post, 1350848_.DOC - 12 as is known in the art. The bottom of post 31 connects to one end of base 32. Similarly, struts 33 and 35 are also telescopically extendable and have hooked ends for engaging with a flange proximate to the top of post 31. The bottom end of strut 33 is pivotally connected to base 32 at a point distant from the end of base 32 5 connected to post 31. The non-hooked end of strut 35 is pivotally connected to bracket 34. Bracket 34 is attached by conventional means to a ceiling, beam, girder, joist or other such part of a structure near to where the screen is located. As an example, for a screen across a shop front in a shopping mall, bracket 34 may be attached to the ceiling or a part thereof of the shopping mall. In position for use, 10 support means 30 is substantially stable and has enough strength in combination with other support means to support the screen. Figure 4 is an illustration of a screen 1000 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. Screen 1000 is similar to screen 10 illustrated in Figure 1 and only 15 points of distinction will be described. Support means 1001 will be discussed further in relation to Figure 5, but as can be seen includes two support struts 1002 and 1003 for connecting support means 1001 to a nearby structure for stability. Screen 1000 includes a double door 1004, which is exemplary to some embodiments of the invention. Also illustrated in Figure 4 is a canopy 1005, which is shown in section for 20 illustrative purposes. Canopy 1005 attaches at one end to the top of the panels of screen 1000 and at another end to a nearby structure. Canopy 1005 provides an additional barrier to the screen and is typically used where the panels are erected a distance in front of a nearby structure and overhead protection is required. 25 Figure 5 is an illustration of a support means 2000 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention and similar to support means 1001 shown in Figure 4. Similar in construction to support means 30 illustrated in Figure 3, support means 2000 includes an additional base portion 2001 for extra stabilisation. Telescopically extendable strut 2002 extends from the end of base 2003 distal to support post 2004, 30 where it is pivotally connected, to a point on support post 2004 below an upper telescopically extendable portion 2005 of support post 2004. Support post 2004 can therefore be vertically extended without extension of strut 2002. Strut 2002 can be disconnected from support post 2004 and pivoted for compact storage and transportation. Near the top of support post 2004 is attached a bracket 2006 for 35 connecting struts, such as struts 1002 and 1003 illustrated in Figure 4, to support post 2004. Bracket 2006 comprises a hole 2009 for receiving an end of a strut. as described below in relation to Figure 6.
350848_lOc - 13 Figure 6 is an illustration of part of the support means shown in Figure 5. Bracket 2006 is attached to support post 2004. Also shown is a strut 2007 which is connected to bracket 2006 by means of a fixing means, such as fixing means 2008, which has a first, fixed, part and a second, moveable, part which can be orientated relative to the 5 first part in such a way that the end of strut 2007 is connected through a hole in bracket 2006, such as will be apparent to those of skill in the art. Figure 7 illustrates a support means 40 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. Support means 40 includes telescopically extendible post 41, 10 attachment means 42 and base pad 43. Attachment means 42 is adapted to fit over the top of post 41 and attach to a ceiling, girder, beam or other structure in the area. A screw or other such means may be provided to connect attachment means 42 to post 41 or alternatively the attachment means is sized to fit over the top of post 41 to hold it in position, as is shown in Figure 4. Attachment means 42 is attached to the 15 ceiling or other such structure by conventional means, such as a bolt or clamp. Support means 40 does not have a base similar to base 32 shown in Figure 3, although optionally it may do so in some embodiments for enhanced stability. The bottom of post 41 may have a small flange as shown in Figure 4. Post 41 is 20 positioned on top of base pad 43. The base pad is made of rubber or a similar material and both protects the floor from damage and helps prevent post 41 from slipping. Stability in support means 40 is therefore at least partially obtained through attachment to the ceiling or similar at the top, and with the anti-slip base pad at the bottom. 25 In an alternative embodiment, the support means may include an attachable base section which has a rubber bottom for non-slip contact with a floor. This or any other base section may be attachable to the support post by means of a universal joint or other suitable joint as will be known to those skilled in the art. 30 Figure 8 is an illustration of a base pad 400 according to an embodiment of the invention. Base pad 400 includes a foot section 401, two vertical portions 402 and 403, and post insert 404. Post insert 404 is adapted to insert into the bottom of a support post and is pivotally connected to vertical portions 402 and 403. The bottom 35 of base pad 400 can be tilted, for example according to the contour of the floor or ground upon which the support means is positioned.
1350848_.DOC - 14 In other embodiments, a base pad or base section is provided whereby generally when connected to the support post the foot of the base pad can pivot in any way including by means of a hinge, 'ball and socket' joint or any other pivotal connection known in the art. The pivotal connection may connect the base pad to the support 5 post or connect two portions of the base pad together, such that at least the bottom portion of the base pad is adapted to tilt. As described above, the support means include posts that are vertically extendible, for example by telescopic extension. The support posts are therefore adaptable to be 10 able to be used with screens of differing heights, for example using different numbers of panels or using panels of different heights. As such, the support posts may be used in a large number of screen applications. Turning now to Figures 9 to 19, it will be described how the screen panels may be 15 connected to the support means. The brackets described below are examples of means for attaching, connecting or engaging panels to support posts and are not intended to be limiting to the invention. Alternative means of engagement may also be used and will be apparent to those skilled in the art. 20 Figure 9 illustrates a bracket 500 according to an embodiment of the invention. Bracket 500 is preferably constructed from a substantially flat blank of material such as galvanised steel or plastic and bent into the required shape. Hook portion 501 is adapted to engage with a support post by hooking around the rear of the support post and cavity portion 502 is shaped to receive the support post. Bracket 500 is 25 adapted to be used with a support post of square or rectangular cross-section, although other shapes of cavity 502 could be provided for alternative shaped support posts. Bracket 500 has flanges 503 and 504, which protrude above and below the plane of 30 the bracket respectively. In the embodiment shown in Figure 9, flanges 503 and 504 have gripping means in the form of protruding spikes 505 which grip the screen panels that receive bracket 500 and thus increase the stability of the screen. In alternative embodiments of the invention, alternative means for gripping or taking some purchase on panels are provided. 35 Brackets like bracket 500 are cheap to manufacture due to their simple construction from a single piece of material.
1350848_1DOC - 15 Figure 10 illustrates a bracket according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. This bracket shares many attributes of the bracket illustrated in Figure 9 and like references are used to refer to like features. 5 Figure 11 illustrates a bracket 50 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. Bracket 50 includes a first U-shaped portion 51 and a second U-shaped portion 52. First U-shaped portion 51 is adapted to be positioned around the post of the support means. In Figure 5 U-shaped portion 51 is shaped such that when connected to second U-shaped portion 52 a rectangular hole is created. Bracket 50 10 is therefore adapted for use with a post of similar rectangular cross-section, such as those shown in Figure 3. In other embodiments, different shape poles may be used, for example of pole with a circular cross-section, and the bracket is shaped accordingly. 15 Second U-shaped portion 52 has ends with flanges 53 and 54. Again, the shape of both second U-shaped portion 52 and flanges 53 and 54 may vary as will be known to one of skill in the art. First and second U-shaped portions 51 and 52 may be connected, particularly when 20 in use to attach the support post and screen panels. Bracket 50 includes pivot 56 and screw 55 to connect and hold in place the U-shaped portions; however other means may be used. In one alternative embodiment, bracket 50 includes a single component with a hole having a shape corresponding to that of the support post, adapted to be slid onto the support post, although this may be less easy to use. 25 Figure 12 is a cross-sectional view of part of a screen 60 in use according to an embodiment of the invention. Post 61, screen panels 62, 63, 64 and 65, and bracket 66 are shown in Figure 12. Not all of the post or screen panels are shown. 30 Panels 63 and 64 are vertically aligned with each other, as are panels 62 and 65. Panels 63 and 64 overlap horizontally with panels 62 and 65, in a similar way to the panels shown in Figure 1. Bracket 66 is positioned around post 61 and rests on the top of panels 64 and 65. In 35 one embodiment, bracket 66 may include a clamp or similar mechanism to hold it in position around post 61, although this is not essential. Panels 62 and 63 rest on top of bracket 66.
1350848_IDOC - 16 Screen panels 62 to 65 all include a small groove around their bottom and top edges and typically this is provided around the whole edge to allow for screens whereby the panels are oriented differently. The flanges of bracket 66, such as flanges 503 and 504 as shown in Figure 6 are positioned in the grooves of panels 63 and 64 to 5 increase the stability of the screen arrangement. The grooves are sized with appropriate width and depth to receive the flanges. Whilst the grooves of panels 62 and 65 are not used in the embodiment shown in Figure 12 in that they do not receive flanges, it is advantageous if all panels include such grooves since any panel can then be used in any position, although it is possible for some panels in 10 appropriate positions not to include grooves. Bracket 66 is adapted such that when in position in the constructed screen, the flanges are positioned at a distance from post 61 such that panels 62 and 65 abut post 61 and panels 63 and 64 abut panels 62 and 65 respectively, with the flanges 15 being positioned in the grooves of panels 63 and 64. In an alternative embodiment, the flanges of bracket 66 are distanced approximately the width of two screen panels away from post 61 when in position such that the flanges abut the outer side of panels 63 and 64. In this embodiment, none of the 20 panels need to have grooves, making the panels simpler in construction although the bracket flanges are visible on the outer side of the screen, which may be disadvantageous. Figure 13 is a cut-away illustration of part of the screen 60 shown in Figure 12 from 25 an alternative angle. Like reference numbers refer to like features. Figure 14 is an illustration of a further bracket 70 according to an embodiment of the invention. Bracket 70 is adapted to slide over a support post and be fastened in place by means of screw 71. Bracket 70 also includes hooked portion 72, which is adapted 30 to fit over the top of a screen panel with the hooked end of the hooked portion abutting the front of a screen panel when in use. In embodiments described above, the overlap of the screen panels results in there being two screen panels overlapping at a point adjacent to the position of the support posts. In such embodiments, the hooked portion is adapted to hook over two panels. However, in other embodiments, 35 the hooked portion may hook over one panel, or be adaptable depending on the required use.
1350848_.DOC - 17 In other embodiments, different forms of brackets for the tops of screen panels may be provided as will be known to those skilled in the art, and that shown in Figure II is provided by way of non-limiting example only. 5 Figure 15 is an illustration of corner bracket 700 according to an embodiment of the invention. Where the screen has a right-angled corner, two panels abut at right angles and corner bracket 700 provides a connection between two such panels in a similar manner to that described above. Corner bracket 700 has flanges similar to those illustrated in the previously discussed examples, but the flanges are also at 10 right-angles to each other. Corner bracket 700 includes a hole 701 which may engage with a support post; for example, corner bracket 700 may be slid down a support post to the relevant position. In alternative embodiments, the corner bracket includes a hook similar to that shown in Figure 10, or any other means for attaching or engaging with a support post. Using such brackets, a right-angled corner to the 15 screen structure can be formed using a single support means positioned inside the corner. Figure 16 is an illustration of an alternative view of bracket 700. 20 Figure 17 is an illustration of a corner bracket 7000 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. Corner bracket 7000 has spikes 7001 protruding from flanges for gripping screen panels as previously described. Also provided are cavities 7002 and 7003 which are adapted to receive support posts for engaging the panels to the support posts. 25 Other embodiments have corner brackets with flanges at other angles to each other, enabling corners of other angles to be formed in the screen structure. Alternatively, the corner bracket may not engage with a support post, but attach or 30 engage with two panels at an angle, thus providing some rigidity to the screen corner. Figure 18 is an illustration of an embodiment of top and bottom corner brackets 710 and 711 respectively. Top corner bracket 710 is positioned on top of two panels at 35 right-angles to each other on the top layer of the screen at a screen corner. Bottom corner bracket 711 is positioned on the floor or ground under two panels at right angles to each other on the bottom layer of the screen at a screen corner. Top and bottom corner brackets may include a method of engagement with support posts, as 1350848_IDOC - 18 is provided by holes 712 and 713 in the embodiments shown in Figure 18. Top and bottom corner brackets may be provided for other angles of screen corner, as will be known to those skilled in the art. 5 Figure 19 is an illustration of a top or bottom corner bracket 750 according to another embodiment of the invention. The orientation shown is appropriate for use as a bottom corner bracket since flanges 752 and extending spikes 751 extend upwards. When used as a top corner bracket 750, the bracket is orientated the other way up and flanges 752 and spikes 751 extend downwards. Corner bracket 750 includes a 10 cavity portion 753 adapted to fit around a support post for engaging the support post with the screen panels. Corner bracket 750 has a rectangular-shaped cavity portion 753 because it is intended for use with a support post of rectangular cross-section. Where posts of 15 other cross-sections are used, the shape of the cavity portion in brackets may be changed accordingly. Figure 20 is an illustration of a bottom portion of a screen panel 80 according to an embodiment of the invention. Screen panel 80 includes an edge portion 81 which is 20 made of rubber or other similar material. Edge portion 81 is the bottom edge of screen panel 80 and in Figure 20 is in contact with the floor or ground. The other edges of screen panel 80 may be provided with similar edges. Edge portion 81 provides a sealed contact with the floor or ground such that dust and 25 other such debris from building or construction work behind the screen do not pass through the screen. The edge portion also reduces the amount of noise able to pass through the screen. Using rubber or similar material reduces the amount of damage a screen can do to a floor, which is clearly desirable in a retail or other public environment. 30 The screen panels positioned at the bottom of the screen may be provided with any kind of edging material, and that illustrated in Figure 20 is included by way of example only. A further example is that panels may be provided with edging tape along their bottom edge to protect the bottom of the panel, provide grip with the floor 35 or ground, or other such advantage. The tape may be formed of, for example, rubber or a plastic and may be attached to the panels by an adhesive or other known method. In a further embodiment, the panel has no edging material and rests directly on the floor or ground.
1350848iDOC _ 19 Panels may be provided with skirting. Skirting may be in the form of a flap attached at one end to a panel. Skirting may be provided on one side of a panel, or both. When the panels are in position, the end of the skirting not attached to a panel may contact 5 the floor or ground and act as a barrier, for example to dust and/or noise. It may also protect the screen, for example from the impact of cleaning devices used nearby. The skirting may be made from any suitable material known in the art, such as rubber. 10 Figure 21 is an illustration of a skirting corner bracket 780 according to an embodiment of the invention. Skirting corner bracket 780 engages screen panels and a support post at a corner of the screen at skirting height. Skirting corner bracket 780 is similar to corner bracket 7000 shown in Figure 17, with an additional rectangular shaped cavity or cut-out 781. Cavity 781 allows room for a support strut of the corner 15 support post to pivot and be moved into position as described in relation to Figure 5. Figure 22 is an illustration of a screen 90 according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. In contrast to previously discussed screens, screen 90 has rectangular panels arranged with their longest side vertical and consists of two vertical layers of 20 panels of differing size and shape, with smaller panels being positioned above larger panels. Screen 90 is arranged such that the amount of overlap between panels is minimised and therefore the number of panels shown in the particular configuration used could not be extended any further in the horizontal direction. Support means are not visible in Figure 16 but are positioned behind the screen panels. 25 Screen 90 includes double doors 91, display panel 92 and advertising 93. The screen presents a clean, presentable face to the public and this may be utilised by a retailer or marketing agency to advertise or market products or services. Screen panel 94 includes display panel 92 and has a transparent front portion and cavity inside. 30 Products may be placed in display panel 92. Other panels may have advertising posters or other such marketing material attached to them, such as advertising 93. A poster may be attached to a screen panel using conventional methods, for example the panel may have a poster insert forming a front section into which posters may be inserted, as is well known in the art. 35 Figure 23 illustrates a spreader bar 2300 according to an embodiment of the invention. Spreader bar 2300 comprises two brackets 2301 and 2302 and an intermediary bar 2303. In use, the brackets are each attached to neighbouring 1350848_iDOC - 20 support posts and spreader bar 2300 provides additional stability to the structure. Any number of spreader bars may be used, depending on need. Figure 24 illustrates a door spreader bar 2400 according to an embodiment of the 5 invention. Spreader bar 2400 spans between two support posts which are positioned either side of a gap in screen panels for doors. Spreader bar 2400 comprises two attachment means 2401 and 2402 which are adapted to attach spreader bar 2400 to the support posts using any appropriate means, but in one embodiment by screwing to a member connected to the support post. Bar portion 2403 is connected to 10 attachment means 2401 and 2402, for example using connectors 2405 that comprise a first, fixed, part and a second, moveable, part which can be orientated relative to the first part to securely connect the attachment means to bar portion 2403, such as is shown in Figure 24. Bar portion 2403 spans along the top of the door gap and provides structural support for doors to be hung in the gap. The doors can be hinged 15 or sliding as is appropriate. Bar portion 2403 comprises a central slot 2404 which is adapted to receive one or more door bolts. In alternative embodiments of the invention, curved or angled screen panels are provided. These may be used where the screen is required to go around a corner, go 20 around some obstacle or to where desired. Curved or angled panels may be connected to support posts and overlapped with other curved, angled or straight panels, as is required. Unless the context clearly requires otherwise, throughout the description and the 25 claims, the words "comprise", "comprising", and the like, are to be construed in an inclusive sense as opposed to an exclusive or exhaustive sense, that is to say, in the sense of "including, but not limited to". Claims (26)

1. A demountable screen comprising: a plurality of support means; 5 a plurality of panels, each supported by one or more of the support means and positioned such that at least two horizontally adjacent panels overlap by an adjustable amount; and a plurality of engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the panels with one or more of the support means. 10
2. A demountable screen as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of the panels comprises at least one groove in at least one outer edge, the groove(s) being adapted to receive a portion of one of the engagement means. 15
3. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the engagement means comprises a flange for engaging with one of the panels. 20
4. A demountable screen as claimed in claim 3, wherein the flange is adapted to be received by one of the grooves of the panels.
5. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of claims 3 to 4, wherein at least one of the engagement means comprises one or more means for 25 gripping one of the panels.
6. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the demountable screen further comprises at least one engagement means adapted to engage one or more of the panels with one or more other 30 of the panels.
7. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the engagement means is adapted to engage with two panels positioned at an angle to one another. 35
8. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the panels comprises edging adapted to at least partially seal a gap between the panel and at least one adjacent panel. 135048IDOC - 23
9. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the support means is adjustable in height. 5
10. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein each support means comprises a vertically extendible post.
11. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the support means comprises attachment means 10 adapted to attach to a surrounding structure.
12. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the support means comprises a base adapted to contact the floor, at least a bottom portion of the base being adapted to tilt. 15
13. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the demountable screen comprises a door.
14. A demountable screen as claimed in claim 13, wherein the door is hinged 20 from a frame positioned between panels.
15. A demountable screen as claimed in claim 13, wherein the door is adapted to slideably engage with a slide rail, the slide rail being positioned between panels. 25
16. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the panels comprises a cavity and display panel and/or at least one of the panels comprises a poster insert. 30
17. A demountable screen as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the panels are formed of a noise absorbent material.
18. A kitset for a demountable screen as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 17. 35
19. A method of forming a demountable screen, comprising: providing a plurality of support means; 1350848_.OC -24 providing a plurality of panels, each supported by one or more of the support means and positioned such that at least two horizontally adjacent panels overlap by an adjustable amount; and providing a plurality of engagement means adapted to engage one or 5 more of the panels with one or more of the support means.
20. A method as claimed in claim 19, wherein the method comprises engaging at least one of the panels with at least one of the support means using at least one of the engagement means. 10
21. A method as claimed in claim 20, wherein the step of engaging comprises inserting a flange of at least one of the engagement means into a groove of at least one of the panels. 15
22. A method as claimed in any one of claims 20 to 21, wherein the step of engaging comprises positioning at least one of the engagement means at least partially around a post of at least one of the support means.
23. A method as claimed in any one of claims 19 to 22, wherein the method 20 comprises at least partially sealing a gap between at least two adjacent panels.
24. A method as claimed in claim 23, wherein the gap is sealed using edging of at least one panel. 25
25. A demountable screen substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the embodiments shown in the drawings.
26. A kitset for a demountable screen substantially as hereinbefore described 30 with reference to any one of the embodiments shown in the drawings.
