Abstract

According to the present invention there is provided a rotating joiner fitting for joining a tube, leg or beam of a wakeboard tower for boats, including: 5 a first portion being an end filing with threaded portion and sunken circular area a second portion being an extended end fitting a third portion being a rotating fitting with a raised circular section that joins the first and second portions wherein the first portion and second portion are welded to the ends of joining 10 wakeboard tower legs or beams, and the third portion is rotated to obtain the exact angle to all portions, providing a universal rotating joiner fitting for joining wakeboard tower legs or beams and accommodating for differing widths of a wakeboard tower, without the need for telescopic top beams, cutting, or manual adjustment involving specialized equipment. Description

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT ROTATING JOINER FITTING FOR WAKEBOARD TOWER LEGS OR BEAM 5 The present invention relates to a device that can be used to join wakeboard tower legs or beams for boats. In the past, as wakeboard tower sizes and shapes vary, aluminium tubing in multiple sections was required to join wakeboard tower legs or beams, which are often curved in 10 shape, requiring drilling and inserting smaller leg tubes inside larger tubes in a telescopic fashion, requiring up to eight bolts and a degree of skill and experience to ensure a tight fit, without the ability to further adjust the leg or beam joint should it become necessary. Until the present invention, joining wakeboard tower legs or beams has always had the 15 requirement for cutting and manual adjustment, with fittings and pivoting lap joints with bolts or grub screws used as an axis of any pivot allowing only up or down, or side-to side planer movement. The result was a join that involved up to 90 degree angles pivoting angles or elbow 20 bends. Current inventions also do not enable legs joined to a top bar of a wakeboard tower to accommodate differing widths of wakeboard towers, so that, until the present invention, telescopic top beams were required to adjust a wakeboard tower to the width of a boat. 25 Although it is possible for any wakeboard tower beam to be joined with the present invention, it is preferred that the present invention is used to join a top beam or section of a wakeboard tower to legs or beams. 30 The present invention allows for rotating a joining leg or beam before securing the parts, and by doing so, the present invention allows for adjustment of width at the ends of the legs which, in the case of curved legs common to wakeboard towers, means that the present invention is able to accommodate almost all wakeboard tower width variations without the need for a wakeboard tower itself using a telescopic top beam. 35 According to the present invention there is provided a rotating joiner fitting for joining a tube, leg or beam of a wakeboard tower for boats, including: a first portion being an end fitting with threaded portion and sunken circular area a second portion being an extended end fitting 40 a third portion being a rotating fitting with a raised circular section that joins the first and second portions wherein the first portion and second portion are welded to the ends of joining wakeboard tower legs or beams, and the third portion is rotated to obtain the exact angle to all portions, providing a universal rotating joiner fitting for joining wakeboard tower legs 45 or beams and accommodating for differing widths of a wakeboard tower, without the need for telescopic top beams, cutting, or manual adjustment involving specialized equipment.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: 5 Fig. 1 is a side perspective cross sectional view of an end part fitting Fig. 2 is a side perspective cross sectional view of a rotating joiner fitting Fig. 3 is a side perspective cross sectional view of an extended end part fitting 10 Fig. 4 is a side perspective cross sectional view of a joiner fitting in complete form Fig. 5 is a side perspective cross sectional view of a rotating joiner fitting with stabilizing cavity 15 Fig. 6 is a top perspective view of a wakeboard tower Fig. 7 is a top perspective view of a wakeboard tower with legs rotated outwards 20 Fig. 8 is a top perspective view of a wakeboard tower with legs rotated inwards The portions may be made of any suitable material such as aluminium and stainless steel for bolts and joints. 25 It is preferred that first portion 1 (Fig. 1) have a circular recessed area 2 and a threaded centre hole 3, and be welded to the end of a wakeboard tower leg tubing or beam 13. It is preferred that third portion 4 (Fig. 2) is joined with first portion 1 with the insertion of the raised circular machined section 7 into the circular recessed area 2 with a bolt, pin or 30 other securing device inserted in centre hole 3, securing the portions together while allowing for the rotational movement of third portion 4 to obtain the exact angle required. It is preferred that second portion 5 (Fig. 3) is welded to the end of a joining leg or beam 14 after inserting the circular machined section 6 into the joining leg or beam 14, and 35 joins third portion 4, which is able to be rotated due to the raised circular machined section 7 to the exact angle required to meet the second portion 5. Although it is preferred that the second portion 5 and third portion 4 be joined together by two bolts or other securing devices 8 and 9, only one bolt or other securing device 40 provides sufficient strength to join the second portion 5 and third portion 4. The portions join together to form rotating joiner fitting 15 (Fig. 4). It is preferred that, before securing second portion 5, a joining leg tubing or beam 14 be 45 rotated inwards or outwards to match the width of a boat. It is possible for a threaded hole 18 and stabilizing bolt 19 (Fig. 5) be included in third portion 4 to increase the strength and stability of joiner fitting 15. 50 It will be understood by persons skilled in the art of the present invention that many modifications or applications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of 2 the invention described above, including use of the present invention to enable installation of a wakeboard tower regardless of the width of a boat. As can be seen in Fig. 6, the basic components of a wakeboard tower are a top beam 5 10, curved front legs 11 and curved rear legs 12. As can be seen in Fig. 7, using the present invention it is possible for joining legs or beams 14 to be rotated outwards 16 using joiner fitting 15 as the rotating axis point, before securing joiner fittings 15 to increase the width between the end points and match 10 the required width of a boat for a wider wakeboard tower or larger boat without the need for a telescopic top beam. As can be seen in Fig. 8, it is possible for joining leg or beams 14 to be rotated inwards 17 using joiner fitting 15 as the rotating axis point, before securing joiner fittings 15 to 15 narrow the width between the ends and match the required width of a boat for a narrower wakeboard tower or smaller boat without the need for a telescopic top beam. It is preferred that, when securing rotating joiner fitting 15, bolts or other securing devices 8 and 9 are directed inwards so as to avoid visibility. 20 25 James Odell 22 June 2011 3 EDITORIAL NOTE: 2010100574 Description page 4 is blank.
