Description
Regulation 3.2 AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Name of Applicant: HINDQUARTER PTY. LTD. Actual Inventor(s): ENZO ROGER GNOCATO Address for Service: SANDERCOCK & COWIE 180B SLADEN STREET CRANBOURNE VICTORIA 3977 Invention Title: ACCOMMODATION ADDITION TO CARAVAN - 1 - - la TITLE: ACCOMMODATION ADDITION TO CARAVAN FIELD OF THE INVENTION 5 This invention concerns additions to caravans for increasing the accommodation capacity whether provided as a feature of a new caravan or as a modification to a caravan in use. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 10 High sleeping capacity is a major advantage in a caravan and manufacturers expend -2 considerable design effort in utilising the available space. The customary approach to maximise volume has been to build the body of the van with a slide out extension which in the extended state is large enough in floor area to take a bed. This facility requires special construction space for the extension and reliable weather seals between the sliding 5 parts. Australian Patent No. 2003200720 is an example of such an extension. It would be advantageous if the caravan body length could be made shorter without reducing the living space or the accessibility of the space. 10 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An accommodation addition for a caravan, comprising a base which is attachable to the roof of the caravan, a lid capable of covering the base, a sleeve of flexible sheet material mutually connecting the perimeters of the base and lid, an entry aperture in the base 15 intended to register with a roof hatch in the caravan and collapsible connectors between the perimeters operable to give a raised position when occupied and a lowered position for travelling. In a variant, the base and lid are each one piece rotational mouldings. 20 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS One embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: 25 Figure 1 is a plan. Figure 2 is a section. 30 DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS Referring now to the drawings, caravan 2 is 5.25m long. Hatch 4 (550mm x 450mm) is -3 cut in the roof between the frame bearers 6 (see Figure 2) to give access for the caravan interior to the accommodation unit 8, 2250mmW x 2150mmL. The unit has an aperture 10 which registers with roof hatch 4. 5 Referring now to Figure 2, the base is rectangular made from jointed hardwood strips 12 to which is secured a 2150 x 2250mm sheet of plywood 14. An aperture 10 is excised from the sheet so that when installed on the caravan roof it registers with the hatch in the roof of the caravan for which the addition is intended. The aperture adjoins the 2250mm side of the frame allowing access to one person to the mattress space alongside the 10 aperture. A sub-frame surrounds the aperture. Brackets are fixed to the sub-frame for attachment to the upper end of a ladder. The hardwood frame 12 is surrounded by an outer upstand 16 which forms a weatherproof tray large enough to take a mattress for two people. An inner continuous upstand 18 defines the perimeter of the living space inside the unit. 15 The lid 20 is likewise made of a timber frame 22 with a fascia 24 on all four sides. The lid is an overlap fit on the outer upstand 16 of the base and is covered with sheet metal 26. A polyester fabric sleeve 28 is attached to the frame 22 and the outer face of the inner upstand 18. The sleeve 28 is about 1000mm long which allows the lid to stand 850mm 20 above the surface of the base. The lid is connected to the base on each of the four sides by scissor lifts 30. This is a component which is known in the caravan art and is used to keep pop-top canopies in the up and down positions. Coil springs 32 within the scissor lifts compress when the lid is lowered for travelling and assist with its deployment when parked. 25 The sleeve has windows 34 made of flexible, vinyl sheet plastic and fly sheeting with zippers. In use the caravan frame members are bored to receive fixing bolts which pass through 30 the roof and into the timber frame of the base, with the roof hatch and entry aperture in register. A telescopic ladder 36 provides access. Mattress 38 sleeps two adults.
-4 A caulking gun is used to insert ribbons of silicone sealer between the base and all external joins of the caravan roof for waterproofing. The scissor lifts lock the cover in the lowered position for travelling. 5 We have found the advantages of the above embodiment to be: 1. Increases drag to minimum extent having regard to increase in volume/space. 2. Creates a children's play space in inclement weather and sleeps two adults when 10 required. 3. Is applicable to new and used caravans. It is to be understood that the word "comprising" as used throughout the specification is 15 to be interpreted in its inclusive form, ie. use of the word "comprising" does not exclude the addition of other elements. It is to be understood that various modifications of and/or additions to the invention can be made without departing from the basic nature of the invention. These modifications 20 and/or additions are therefore considered to fall within the scope of the invention.
