Description

1 Description Free-standing garden frames are essential for any raised garden bed. Options for free standing garden frames in Australia are presently limited to those made from timber, concrete, brick and corrugated iron. Such garden frames are relatively expensive to install due to the high cost of design, construction and materials. This plastic garden frame has been designed to provide an alternative product that is lightweight, strong, durable, mobile, inexpensive and simple to install in various configurations. A minimum of four plastic panels are required to make one free-standing garden frame (6 on attached Diagram). Every panel is identical (1 on attached Diagram) and designed to fit together through a simple hinge system that relies on a plastic, aluminium or steel rod to join panels together (2 & 3 on attached Diagram). Each hinge can support panels at angles of 90 degrees and 180 degrees, thus allowing extended straight sections of many meters. A typical garden frame may have a length of 10m and width of Im, assembled from 22 panels. The panels have an optimum height for raised garden beds on hard surfaces such as concrete and pavers, as well as soft surfaces such as soil. Each panel weighs around 2kg and thus allows simple installation of a garden frame in minutes. The weight is significantly reduced by the use of a dual skin (5 on attached Diagram), while strength is maintained by the use of reinforced ribbing on both sides of the panel (1 on attached Diagram). Extra strength is provided by the hinge rods every 1000mm, particularly on soft ground where longer hinge rods can be inserted into the ground for added stability (4 on attached Diagram). An alternative design that achieves the same practical outcome would be to combine the 3mm dual skins into a thicker 6mm single skin.

Claims (6)

1. A free-standing garden frame comprising four or more identical dual-skin plastic panels that are joined at an angle of 90 degrees or 180 degrees by inserting an independent hinge rod through overlapping hinge holes at the end of each panel.
2. A free-standing garden frame as claimed in claim 1, where each plastic panel has reinforced ribbing on the outward face and inward face.
3. A free-standing garden frame according to claims 1 and 2, where the top half and bottom half of each plastic panel extend an equal distance in opposite directions so that any two panels overlap to form an even join through which a hinge rod is inserted.
4. A free-standing garden frame according to claims 1, 2 and 3, where the combined hinge hole of two overlapping panels can completely contain one hinge rod so the garden frame can sit evenly on any flat surface.
5. A free-standing garden frame according to claims 1, 2, 3 and 4, where the combined hinge hole of two overlapping panels can support a hinge rod longer than the width of the panel so the hinge rod can be inserted in to the ground to provide additional strength.
6. A free-standing garden frame according to claims 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, as described in the accompanying drawing. Luke Hanson 29 July 2009 Innovation Patent Application SPEI-12196851
