Description
Device for stimulating a patient's memory The invention concerns a device for stimulating the memory of a person with cerebral degeneration, for example a patient with Alzheimer's disease. The invention more particularly aims to stimulate this memory by association of more information, particularly including the smell of the patient. Olfactory memory is one of the deepest and most instinctive in humans. Therefore, for a patient with Alzheimer's disease, for example, it may be beneficial to offer rehabilitation programs for poor memory, particularly involving the solicitation of smell. The invention can implement such a process. More particularly, the invention relates to a device for stimulating memory in a person with cerebral degeneration, for example a patient with Alzheimer's disease, characterized in that it comprises a selector-diffuser of predetermined odorant products and at least one method of reproduction of information addressing a sense other than smell and correlating to the odorant products of said selector-diffuser. A specific image and/or sound may be associated with such olfactory information. Other senses can be involved, including touch. Consequently, another method of reproducing information, using sight, can be the reproduction of images, the images being correlated to the odorant products of the selector-diffuser. Yet another method of reproduction of information can be the reproduction of sounds, these sounds being correlated to said odorant products. In practice, a personal computer or similar device includes a monitor and a sound card. Therefore, it is advantageous to use such a personal computer and to program it to manage the issuance of said information correlated to the odorant products of the selector-diffuser. Such a computer can be easily programmed to manage the issuance of this information and to generate selector-diffuser command orders to cause vaporization of a 2 product with a predetermined odor along with the reproduction of an image and/or a corresponding sound. The selector-diffuser may be comprised of a number of solenoid valves, respectively associated with specific odorant product containers, preferably in liquid form. A common source of compressed air is connected to the inputs of all the solenoid valves. Each output can deliver an aerosol spray of the selected odorant product, when the corresponding solenoid valve is controlled. The invention will be better understood and other advantages thereof will become more apparent in the description of a device according to its principle, given with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: - The single figure is a schematic view of components of the device according to the invention. In the example described, the device 11 for stimulating the memory includes a conventional computer 13 comprising a central processing unit 14, a monitor 15 and a keyboard 16. The computer is equipped with a sound card and a small speaker 18. The device 11 also includes a selector-diffuser for predetermined odorant products. In the example, this selector-diffuser 20 includes a number of solenoid valves 22a-22f, etc., respectively associated with containers 23a-23f of specific odorant products. The outputs of the solenoid valves are fitted with nozzles 25a-25f for selectively issuing aerosol sprays of said product. For this purpose, all solenoid valve inputs are connected to a compressed air source 30. A control link 32 is established between an interface 33 and the computer 13. The orders prepared by the computer are transmitted to the interface. Such an order is representative of a solenoid valve and allows correlation between visual and/or audio information produced simultaneously by the computer and a selected corresponding odor. Using the keyboard, an operator can control the course of an entire program of emission of correlated information, including, each time, an odor and an image and/or sound. The containers 23a-23f are filled with odorant extracts, each constituting a specific odor that may recall a feature of the patient's active life. The structure is preferably modular to provide 3 power to a number of containers and solenoid valves corresponding to the patient's rehabilitation program. The odors generated recall, for example, the jobs, animals, places characteristic of childhood and the active life of the patient. They are chosen, the same as images and corresponding sounds, based on the patient's past, recreated by his relatives.
